Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Storms Outside, Calm Within.

The morning air smelled faintly of rain.

Mireya felt it as she walked toward the hospital, umbrella in hand.

She was nervous.

Not about work.

Not about Jae.

About what happened when people noticed.

Jae arrived shortly after.

"Morning," he said, holding the umbrella for her.

"Thanks," she said, stepping under it.

They walked in silence, letting the light drizzle cover their heads, sharing the tiny space beneath the umbrella.

It was quiet.

Simple.

Perfect.

Inside, the hospital hummed with normal activity.

But the whispers had returned.

Not the obvious ones.

Subtle. Calculated.

The kind that made her stomach twist.

During lunch, Mireya chose to eat in the staff lounge instead of the usual break area.

Jae followed her, as always.

A group of coworkers sat near the window, glancing their way.

One muttered just loud enough for her to hear:

"Think she's actually good enough for him?"

Mireya froze.

Jae noticed immediately.

"You hear that?" he asked quietly.

She nodded, fists tightening around her chopsticks.

He reached over, covering her hands with his.

"You don't have to listen," he whispered.

She exhaled slowly. "But I can't ignore it either."

Later that day, Mireya's supervisor approached her.

"Can I have a word?" she said.

Inside the office, the supervisor's tone was calm but firm.

"You handled yourself well before," she began.

"Yes?" Mireya asked cautiously.

"But there's tension outside your work. And it's starting to affect the team."

Mireya's chest tightened. "What do you mean?"

"Some staff are… questioning your presence here. Your relationship with Mr. Han is being whispered about."

Mireya froze.

Not because she hadn't expected it.

Because she realized it still mattered.

Jae arrived after work.

"Did everything go okay?" he asked.

She nodded slowly.

"Not exactly. But… okay."

He studied her. "Do you want to confront them?"

"I want to," she admitted. "But carefully. Calmly. Without making it worse."

He nodded approvingly. "I'll back you up, but I want you to take the lead."

She smiled faintly. "I can do this."

The next day, Mireya decided to speak up during a team meeting.

She cleared her throat and addressed the room.

"I know there are whispers," she began. "About my relationship with Jae. About my work. About… me."

All eyes turned toward her.

"I won't pretend it doesn't matter," she continued. "But I also won't let fear or judgment define my place here. I am here to work, to learn, and to respect everyone—just as I expect respect in return."

The room was silent.

Tension hung in the air.

Then one coworker—a senior nurse—nodded.

"Well said."

Others followed.

Mireya exhaled.

The storm outside hadn't disappeared completely.

But she had built shelter.

Afterward, she walked to Jae's side.

He looked at her with pride.

"You spoke perfectly," he said softly.

"I didn't feel perfect," she admitted.

"But I didn't run."

"That's enough," he said, taking her hand.

That evening, they went for a short walk in the drizzle again.

The streets were empty, wet under the soft city lights.

"I was scared today," Mireya admitted.

"I know," he replied.

"But you stood anyway. You stayed in the storm."

She smiled. "It didn't feel like just me. You were with me—even quietly."

He grinned. "I'll always be quietly with you."

Suddenly, a puddle splashed near her feet.

She shrieked, jumping back.

Jae laughed softly. "You're easily startled."

"I'm not! I'm… alert," she insisted, trying to straighten her hair and failing.

Jae chuckled, wrapping his arm around her. "Alert, yes. Adorable, also yes."

She rolled her eyes but laughed.

Even in storms, they found moments of light.

Back at her apartment, they dried off and sat together.

Mireya leaned against him, thinking about the day.

People could whisper.

People could judge.

But she realized now: the storm didn't matter if she had Jae beside her.

"Promise me," she said suddenly.

"What?"

"That no storm will make you step back from us."

"I promise," he said.

"And I promise the same to you," she added.

They sat in quiet contentment.

The rain tapped softly on the window,

But inside, it was calm.
