The Inverse Labyrinth
The dense foliage of the primal jungle suddenly gave way to a clearing that defied the laws of nature. Standing before the exhausted mages was the Upside-Down Palace—a sprawling masterpiece of white marble, floating spires, and golden domes that seemed to have been plucked from a dream and dropped into the heart of the arena. However, as they crossed the threshold of the grand entrance, the camaraderie that had sustained them through the jungle was violently severed.
A shimmering, iridescent veil swept through the group like a ghost. George reached out for Nana, but his hand passed through empty air as space itself folded and warped. In a blink, the candidates were gone, separated by the palace's ancient enchantments and cast into the isolated corridors of a sprawling, impossible labyrinth.
George stumbled as his feet hit a surface that appeared to be a ceiling, decorated with massive, flickering crystal chandeliers that dangled upward toward a floor far above. He looked up—or perhaps down—to see a grand vase falling and shattering against the surface he stood upon. Was it a floor or a ceiling? Beyond the pillars, a void of swirling stars replaced the horizon. There was no north or south here, no true sense of direction. The very air felt heavy with a disorienting, thick magical pressure.
"Nana! Kayn!" George shouted, his voice echoing endlessly through the marble halls. Only the hollow silence of the palace answered him.
Suddenly, the structure beneath him groaned. With a sickening lurch, gravity shifted ninety degrees. George was thrown violently against a wall that instantly became the ground. He groaned, pushing his unruly pale blond hair out of his emerald eyes as his Saint's Sword clattered against the marble.
He wasn't the only one struggling. In a different sector of the palace, Flynn Nightwing was crouched on a narrow ledge overlooking a bottomless pit of swirling mist. Despite the chaos, his composure remained cool and collected. When a massive chandelier detached ahead of him, Flynn didn't panic; he calmly counted the seconds in his mind. Timing his move with the next gravitational tilt, he tapped into his wind magic to propel himself through the air. The gust at his feet acted as a cushion, allowing him to glide across the void and land safely on a passing balcony.
Elsewhere, Julius Alexander moved with forced, regal composure. Even as the room spun around him, he kept his hand firmly on the hilt of his light-sword. He didn't need signs or words; he simply willed his aura to flare, anchoring his feet to what appeared to be the floor through sheer force of presence. "This is mere child's play," he muttered, his jaw set in a line of noble defiance as he ignored the vertigo.
Back in George's corridor, the walls began to slide like massive stone pistons, seeking to crush anything in their path. He realized the palace was a living puzzle, designed to drain the mental fortitude and aura of even the strongest mage. He had to rely on his own intuition now. Closing his eyes to ignore the dizzying sight of the rotating room, he focused his senses on the faint, rhythmic hum of the finish line's beacon.
"I need to escape this place, and fast," George whispered, his resolve hardening.
Hours bled into a blur of pure exhaustion. Every candidate was pushed to their absolute limit. They crawled along walls, leapt through voids where gravity ceased to exist, and dodged the shifting architecture of the maze. Their bodies were battered and their mana reserves were flickering like dying candles, but the desire to prove themselves to the world pushed them forward.
Finally, George saw a sliver of light at the end of a corridor currently positioned at a steep forty-five-degree angle. He scrambled up the slope, his fingers digging into the ornate carvings of the marble wall for purchase. With a final burst of strength, he threw himself through the exit just as the final, resounding bell rang through the arena, echoing the end of the grueling trial. The race was over. Battered and gasping for air, the few who had successfully navigated the nightmare of the palace stood on the other side, the weight of their victory finally beginning to sink in.
