The sky cracked.
Kai could only stare.
Thin lines of blue light spread across the darkness above them, branching like fractures in glass. Pieces of the sky seemed to flicker in and out of existence.
The giant Guardian remained motionless.
Around him, the stone statues stayed on their knees.
Vex slowly lowered his weapon.
"What… is happening?"
The Guardian looked toward the broken sky.
"The Game is trying to hide the truth."
Kai stepped forward cautiously.
"What truth?"
The Guardian's blue eyes returned to him.
"The Death Game was never created simply to test survival."
A cold silence fell over the ruins.
Kai frowned.
"Then what was it created for?"
The Guardian raised one enormous hand.
The ground beneath Kai and the others began glowing.
Suddenly, images appeared in the air.
Hundreds of people.
Different rooms.
Different stages.
Different years.
Players running through the same terrible game.
Kai's eyes widened.
"They've been doing this for years…"
The Guardian nodded.
"Long before you arrived."
Vex stared at the images.
"How many?"
The Guardian didn't answer.
That silence was answer enough.
Kai's stomach tightened.
Then one image caught his attention.
A group of players stood inside a familiar-looking chamber.
One of them was holding the same strange badge Kai carried.
But the badge wasn't divided.
It was complete.
Kai stepped closer.
"That symbol…"
The Guardian spoke.
"The badge belongs to those who refuse the rules."
Kai looked down at his half.
"Then why did the Game give it to us?"
"It didn't."
The Guardian pointed toward the glowing cracks in the sky.
"You found it."
Kai remembered.
The earlier stages.
The pedestal.
The decision to refuse the Game's command.
He finally understood.
They hadn't been rewarded.
They had discovered something the Game didn't want them to find.
Suddenly—
BOOM!
The entire ruin shook.
The statues rose.
Their blue eyes had turned red.
The Guardian's expression changed.
"They've found you."
Vex looked around.
"Who?"
A voice echoed through the ruins.
Not the mechanical Game voice.
Something deeper.
Something furious.
"GUARDIAN."
The giant turned toward the darkness.
"I know."
The shadows between the pillars began gathering.
They twisted together, forming a gigantic shape.
Kai felt a chill run through him.
The shape looked almost human.
But it was far too large.
And its face was nothing but darkness.
The Game had finally sent something different.
Something designed specifically for the Guardian.
The creature spoke again.
"RETURN TO YOUR PLACE."
The Guardian stepped forward.
"No."
The word shook the entire chamber.
The creature roared.
The statues charged.
"RUN!" the Guardian commanded.
Kai didn't move.
"What about you?"
The Guardian looked down at him.
"You cannot defeat what is coming."
Kai tightened his fists.
"Then we'll help you."
Vex stared at him.
"Kai, are you crazy?"
"Probably."
Kai raised his badge.
"But we're not leaving him."
Vex sighed.
"Of course you aren't."
He raised his own badge.
The two halves began glowing.
The Guardian looked at them in surprise.
"You truly don't understand what you carry."
Kai glanced at the badge.
"Then teach us."
The Guardian smiled.
"Survive this battle…"
He turned toward the approaching darkness.
"…and I will."
The creature lunged.
The Guardian raised his massive arm.
CRASH!
A wave of energy exploded across the ruins.
Kai and the others were thrown backward.
The statues attacked from every direction.
Kai rolled away from one strike and quickly stood.
"Everyone, stay together!"
Vex nodded.
They moved through the ruins, using the broken pillars as cover while the Guardian fought the mysterious creature.
But Kai noticed something.
Every time the Guardian struck the creature—
the cracks in the sky grew larger.
"This isn't just a fight," Kai whispered.
Vex looked at him.
"What?"
Kai stared upward.
"The Game is breaking."
Another crack spread across the sky.
And somewhere beyond the ruins...
something laughed.
The Guardian suddenly turned toward Kai.
His expression was no longer calm.
"Run."
Kai froze.
"Why?"
The Guardian looked directly at the broken sky.
"Because that…"
He pointed upward.
"…isn't the sky."
Kai's eyes widened.
The darkness above them began opening.
And something enormous was looking through.
The Game had opened its eye.
