Alex sat on a wood log, wiping the dirt and Tentacool residue from his knife, the twigs and jelly was safely packed away in sealed vials and mesh bags and was placed in the inventory and now, it was time for more team training.
He checked his observation window to see the levels of his pokemon, their hard work over the past 2 months.
[ Nidoking: Level 24 ]
[ Skorupi: Level 22 ]
[ Duskull: Level 19 ]
[ Feebas: Level 11 ]
"Acceptable, skorupi needs more work to reach the levels to evolve while now that Feebas had learned water pulse it can be leveled up faster." Alex murmured.
Feebas was asleep in her rock pool, absolutely exhausted from her Water Pulse breakthrough and Skorupi, having grown noticeably larger and more vicious over the weeks, was perched high on a mangrove branch, diligently sharpening his venomous pincers against the bark. Nidoking was dozing by the fire, his massive armored chest rising and falling rhythmically, completely unbothered by the heat but Duskull was awake.
"Duskull down here," Alex commanded softly.
The ghost 👻 pokemon floated down, its single red eye glowing like a dying ember in the dark as it didn't make a sound, hovering inches above the sand.
"You're lagging in physical manipulation," Alex told the ghost, leaning forward. "You have Night Shade and Will-O-Wisp, but I need you to control the field. I need you to touch things without them touching you which is going to be your trump card."
Alex tossed a fist-sized rock onto the sand, just outside the ring of firelight.
"Use your shadow, just like before but don't float over to it. Stretch your shadow from where you are, wrap it around the rock and bring it to me. Shadows isn't just for moving yourself, it's an extension of your form..... remember you are the shadow."
Duskull stared at the rock and the shadow beneath the ghost began to writhe. It stretched, creeping across the pale sand like spilled black ink as it reached the rock.
Flick.....
The shadow tried to grip it, but the rock stayed put, it lacked the power.
"Again," Alex said patiently. "Condense the ghostly energy and make the dark heavy."
Duskull tried again and again and on the fifth try, the shadow thickened, taking on a physical, gel like texture. It wrapped around the rock, lifting it an inch off the sand, and dragged it silently over to Alex's boot.
"Good," Alex nodded, tossing the rock back into the dark. "Do it with a heavier one and then a branch and by the end of the week, I want you tripping human targets with your shadow while you stay hidden in the shadows"
Duskull bobbed happily, its red eye curving into a crescent shape as it turned its attention to a larger boulder.
Alex reached to his belt and unclipped two Pokéballs that needed to deal with soon.
"Wake up call," Alex said to the empty air as he pressed the release buttons.
Two flashes of red light illuminated the camp.
The first to materialize was the Aron, the Blue Aptitude steel puppy hit the sand and immediately went into a defensive crouch. Its bright blue eyes darted around frantically, taking in the fire, the sleeping huge purple pokemon, and the human who had captured it in the magma chamber.
It let out a metallic hiss, scraping its steel claws against a rock, trying to look larger than it was and the second flash revealed the Clefairy but the fairy type didn't hiss or was angry, it just floated about two inches off the ground slowly rotating in a circle as it's eyes stared blankly at the campfire, reflecting the flames.
Then, it raised a stubby pink finger, pointed at the fire, and wiggled it.
Spark..... A tiny, harmless bubble floated out of its finger and popped with a soft ping.
"Right," Alex sighed. "Introductions."
He looked at the Aron first, the little iron-eater was backing away, eyeing the dark treeline of the jungle, calculating an escape route.
"Don't run," Alex warned, his voice low and commanding. "There are things out there in the swamp that will crack your shell like a walnut and suck out the marrow and more importantly I have your mother and your siblings with me, they are safe but you? You're special."
Aron stopped backing away as it growled, a low vibration that sounded like gears grinding.....Prove it.
Alex reached into his bag and pulled out the Hard Stone he had looted from the dead Ranger's tomb. It was high-quality, dense, and rich in the minerals Arons craved. He tossed it onto the sand in front of the Aron.
"Eat," Alex said. "This is much better than the cheap scrap metal you were chewing on in that Rocket drill."
Aron sniffed the rock suspiciously but bright blue eyes suddenly widened as it took a tentative bite.
Crunch...It devoured the stone in three rapid bites, licking its metal chops, the sheer quality of the item instantly soothing its aggression.
"You stay with me, you get a diet of pure iron, calcium, and battle experience," Alex promised, crouching down to meet the Aron's gaze. "You will evolve into a Lairon, and then an Aggron. You will be a walking fortress, I will make you a god of steel. You fight for me, and I make you the strongest steel type..... Deal?"
Aron looked at the campfire and at the massive Nidoking which was a living testament to Alex's ability to raise monsters.
Slowly, Aron walked forward and bumped its hard metal head against Alex's knee.
Deal....
"Good boy," Alex patted the cold steel. "Welcome to the team partner."
He turned his attention to the Clefairy.
The pink creature had stopped looking at the fire as it was now staring intensely at Skorupi up in the tree and Skorupi was staring back, his stinger twitching nervously. Clefairy didn't blink as it just smiled, a wide, slightly unsettling grin that didn't reach its eyes.
"Hey. Space case," Alex snapped his fingers.
Clefairy slowly turned its head.....Clef?
"You have the ability Magic Guard," Alex said, sizing it up. "You don't take any environmental damage so that means you are going to be my shield when I flood a battlefield with toxic gas."
Clefairy blinked slowly as it reached into an invisible pocket in its fur, pulled out a perfectly smooth, round, grey pebble, and floated over to offer it to Alex.
Alex stared at the pebble. "What is this?"
Clefairy pushed it closer, gently pressing it against Alex's gloved hand.....Gift, for the tall hairless one.
"Thanks I guess," Alex took the pebble slowly, slipping it into his pocket.
"You're.... a bit weird, aren't you?"
Clefairy nodded enthusiastically, then did a sudden backflip, landing perfectly on its feet, and began humming a high-pitched, atonal melody while swaying side to side.
"We'll work on your combat skills tomorrow," Alex muttered, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "For now, just..... try not to creep out the rest of the team."
He stood up, looking over his expanded roster and smiled.
"It's a bizarre setup," Alex thought. "But I wouldn't give up anyone of them. It's a big family now."
Alex put on his MP3 player and relaxed.....
I'll be your dream, I'll be your wish, I'll be your fantasy
I'll be your hope, I'll be your love, be everything that you need
I love you more with every breath truly, madly, deeply do
I will be strong, I will be faithful 'cause I'm counting on
