With a desperate heave of her shoulder, she shoved the heavy fabric aside, revealing a small, rough-hewn stone door hidden in the wall.

She pushed it open with all her remaining strength, slipping into the dark aperture and pulling the door shut behind her, plunging them into absolute darkness.

The underground passage was incredibly narrow, cold, and smelled heavily of damp earth and old stone.

Somewhere deep in the darkness ahead, the slow, rhythmic sound of water dripping echoed hollowly.

The walls were made of rough, jagged rock, worn smooth in specific patches where hundreds of desperate hands had gripped them in the dark throughout history, fleeing from horrors that the world had long since forgotten.

Helen did not dare to slow her pace.

She sprinted through the pitch-black tunnel, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps, her bare feet getting cut on the sharp pebbles beneath her.
