Konoha, Year 49, early summer. Under the personal drive of the Fourth Kazekage Rasa, the war machine of Sunagakure unleashed a momentum more powerful than ever before.
With strategy set, the whole army thundered forward. Rasa held nothing back, deploying his Magnet Release: Gold Dust technique on a grand battlefield scale. The golden sand surged like a roaring tsunami, effortlessly smashing the hasty fortifications the Leaf had erected and carving wide roads for the Suna host. Vast columns followed, a bursting dam of soldiers flooding across the Land of Fire's border.
The ferocity of the assault far exceeded Konoha's expectations. They had clearly underestimated Rasa's resolve to lead in person and commit every reserve, and they had never imagined that Magnet Release could be so terrifying in a frontal assault. Border garrisons fought to the death, yet under absolute power and sudden pinpoint strikes they still fell back step by step.
One border town after another, one resource node after another, was swiftly occupied. Though Rasa imposed strict discipline, war's plundering nature could not be fully curbed. Grain, ores, herbs—even exploding tags—were endlessly scraped up, loaded onto carts and shipped rearward. These precious resources, like life-giving water, nourished Sunagakure, drained by years of war, and first-step fulfilment of the "feed war with war" strategy was achieved. Suna Ninja morale soared to its peak as they sang their way deeper in.
During this unstoppable advance, Sayo's First Puppet Brigade, Third Company, was placed directly under Elder Chiyo as one of the strike-force backbones and played a crucial role.
Chiyo's command was seasoned and precise. She habitually stationed Sayo's company at the crucial nodes of every push: spider puppets scouting wide areas and clearing traps, sweeping obstacles for the main body; or ordering Sayo to lead the company in assaults, tearing through the Leaf's stubborn lines with dense puppet waves and Magnet Release's overwhelming destructive power.
Sayo carried out a company commander's duties to perfection. No longer a lone spearhead, he now had to coordinate the whole. Calmly analysing the field, he issued clear orders to his three platoons: the defence squad erected puppet shield-walls, the assault squad pressed forward with combat puppets, the support squad provided long-range fire and medical aid. His Magnet Release and the twice-upgraded "mirage" became battle-turning trump cards—at times an iron-sand torrent smashing strongpoints, at times high-speed redeployments to rescue hard-pressed sectors.
Under his effective command and personal example, Third Company fought heroically, executed tactics flawlessly and scored repeated successes, becoming a keen blade in Elder Chiyo's hand—so sharp that even Rasa occasionally took notice.
Yet amid the fever of victory, a faint uneasiness clung to Sayo like a ghost, deepening the farther they advanced.
The push… was going too smoothly.
Resistance did appear, casualties did occur, yet overall the Leaf's intensity matched the verdict of "spent arrow" while also feeling… off. Enemy withdrawals were orderly, never collapsing as expected; rather, they reeled back in good form—almost as if luring them deeper.
Much of that unease came from his other-worldly "foresight." In his past life he had never seriously watched Naruto; his knowledge was fragmentary, gleaned from short-video clips and random chats. He knew of the Third Great Ninja War and remembered set-pieces like "the Battle of Kannabi Bridge" and "the yellow flash," and little more. As to the war's exact course, each side's detailed strategies, and especially how Sunagakure finally exited the stage… he was almost blank.
He knew Konoha should win in the end, but how? And how would Suna withdraw? Those key facts were a total void.
That feeling of "knowing the result but not the process" bred deep doubt about the rosy picture before him. Could Konoha really be crushed so easily? Did the Village that produced Minato Namikaze, Jiraiya, Uchiha Shisui and other prodigies possess only this level of depth? Where was the Third Hokage? Why had he never shown himself on this front?
Question after question whirled in his mind.
He stared at the map: the advancing arrow stretched farther and farther, Suna's supply line growing ever thinner, a fragile vein thrust deep into enemy territory. On both sides lay the dense forests of the Land of Fire—perfect cover for countless ambushers.
"Hope… I'm just overthinking it," Sayo told himself, forcing the unease down and focusing on the battle and command at hand. Yet deep inside, a wire had quietly tightened.
Suna's spearhead remained razor-sharp, driving unstoppably toward the heart of the Land of Fire—but unseen currents had already begun to swirl where no one yet noticed.
