The war in the Ninja World shifted like a sandstorm in the desert; the smallest spark could ignite an unexpected blaze. Third Raikage A's decision to launch a top-secret surprise attack on the Land of Earth was meant to break the deadlock and restore Kumogakure's prestige, yet before the spear of lightning could strike, its gleam had already been spotted by eyes hidden in the dark.
Deep beneath Konoha, in the gloomy Root base, Danzo Shimura toyed with an intelligence scroll, a cold, calculating glint in his one eye. He had received word of Kumogakure's movements almost the same instant he learned Iwagakure's main force was shifting west—toward the Land of Wind. In a heartbeat, he hatched a vicious plan: set tiger against wolf and reap the spoils.
He shared nothing with the Third Hokage; instead, through Root's covert channels, he craftily "leaked" word to Ōnoki that the Third Raikage would personally lead an elite strike on the Land of Earth's heartland.
Almost simultaneously, an order bearing the "Hokage's" seal reached Minato Namikaze on the northeastern border, instructing his unit to tighten pressure on Kumogakure's A-B Combination along the Land of Hot Springs frontier. The wily Third Tsuchikage Ōnoki, troubled by the stalemate on the northwestern front, received the tip. He judged at once: even if it were bait, it was worth the gamble. He secretly peeled away a large force from the Wind-Country assault and spread an invisible net around Iwagakure.
Elsewhere, Minato obeyed his orders. His Flying Thunder God Technique and ghost-like tactics caused havoc for A and Killer Bee, nailing the strongest duo to the border and preventing them from reinforcing their father.
The Third Raikage knew nothing of these machinations. Bent on reversing the war, he led his hand-picked elite straight into the Land of Earth like a knife. The early advance was almost absurdly smooth. But that very ease was the trap. Once deep in the chosen killing ground outside Iwagakure, rock-nin sprouted from the mountainsides by the thousand. A sea of exploding tags, sky-blotting Earth Style jutsu, and Ōnoki himself hovering with Dust Release aglow sealed the Kumogakure elite in an instant.
"Ōnoki, you old fox!" The Third Raikage roared. To save his troops, the fierce Raikage showed the resolve of a Kage. He ordered his deputy to break out while he—alone—stayed to buy time.
"Hell Stab – Four-Pronged Spear!"
Pushing Lightning Release Chakra Mode to its peak, the Raikage blazed like a thunder god. What followed became the most tragic legend of the war. With his "strongest spear" and "strongest shield," the Third Raikage battled ten thousand shinobi single-handedly. For three days and nights he carved through rock-nin, blood dyeing the earth, until his chakra and stamina ran dry.
At last, the Thunder Shadow fell dead on his feet. By the time the A-B Combination finally shook off Minato's tenacious harassment and raced to the rescue, it was far too late. They arrived to find a scorched wasteland—and at its center, the indomitable, charred body of their father.
"Father!!!" A's roar split the air. Killer Bee exploded into fury, going full Tailed Beast. The colossal Eight-Tails Gyūki appeared, roaring as Tailed Beast Bombs began obliterating the surrounding peaks.
Through the chaos, the young A hoisted his father's body onto his shoulders. Under the Eight-Tails' cover, they broke out and sprinted for Kumogakure. Back in the village, A formally succeeded as the Fourth Raikage. The old temper was gone; only icy hatred remained. Thunder had fallen, but storm-clouds of vengeance gathered anew.
