Chapter 201 - Chapter 201 Strong Football and Weak Football

"In high-intensity physical confrontations and rapid pressing, their ability to handle the ball becomes very weak. Their level drops significantly, and they fall from core star status to being worse than substitutes."

"Kai believes this is because they have never faced opponents whose intensity and tempo are far beyond their own."

"In youth leagues, you can dominate forever—as long as your body keeps developing."

"But the human body has limits. It doesn't grow stronger endlessly."

"And this is especially true for professional players."

"In the end, most professionals don't differ that much in strength, speed, or physicality."

"So when the physical advantage you rely on is caught up by others, what do you use to play football?"

"And are you really sure you'll never meet someone faster and stronger than you?"

"When your body becomes the weaker side, how do you compete? More strength training?"

Triguera fell silent.

He had only begun to reflect on these questions after Kai brought them up.

And the conclusion made him uneasy.

He had always prided himself on being a top youth development coach.

Simão Sabrosa, Ricardo Quaresma, and Hugo Viana were his proudest products.

But based on Kai's theory—and their recent performances—Triguera realized something troubling.

The ceilings of these rising Portuguese stars might be far lower than he once believed.

Not only would it be difficult for them to reach the level of Luís Figo, they might not even reach true world-class status.

Let alone becoming the core of a top club—just surviving long-term in the top five leagues could already be a challenge.

It wasn't that they lacked talent.

It was that their careers would inevitably hit situations they had never experienced before.

When their physicality, strength, and speed stopped being advantages…

When opponents no longer allowed them to play comfortably under pressure…

They would have nothing left to rely on.

"This will happen to you too, Cristiano," Kai said, looking at Cristiano Ronaldo.

"Of course, your physical potential is much higher than most players. You might always be able to dominate physically against many opponents."

"But even then, it will still limit you. It will stop you from seeing another side of football."

"Cristiano," Kai continued, "trust me. This phase—where you feel physically suppressed—won't last long. Once your body matures and you start proper strength training, you'll have a top-tier physique."

"But there are things you can only learn when you're weak."

Cristiano Ronaldo frowned slightly.

"If early strength training affects my growth, then fine—I won't do it," he said. "I already accepted that before."

"But… what do you mean by that last sentence?"

Kai smiled.

"You think my Marseille turn in the last match relied on physical strength, right?"

Ronaldo nodded.

"I admit physicality helped," Kai said, "but if it were you—being faster—you would've just pushed the ball forward and tried to break through."

"And then you'd get pulled down."

"Most likely, you'd win a foul, maybe a yellow card for the defender, and a decent free-kick position."

"That's the difference in how we handle the ball."

"Because I don't have your speed, I have to use everything."

"I use my feet for the spin, my body for resistance, and I initiate contact at the right moment to slow him down while accelerating myself."

"I even deliberately slow down to bait him into committing—otherwise, I can't beat him."

"Before that play," Kai continued, "I was double-teamed by three players and kept passing the ball to Emerson before getting knocked down."

"You've faced similar situations—you get fouled too."

"But their goal is achieved. They stop our attack."

"We process the game at different speeds."

"I might be half a second faster than you… maybe even a full second."

"Compared to your advantages in speed, shooting, and physicality, that sounds small."

"But that's why I can be the core player in any team."

"No one can stop me from passing the ball without fouling me—if I decide to pass."

"Because I'm just that little bit faster than everyone else."

"This isn't natural talent."

"This comes from always being weaker than others when I was younger."

"If I didn't move the ball faster, I'd lose it."

"That kind of pressure shaped my vision and habits."

"You've always been strong," Kai said. "So you've never needed to see this side of the game—let alone master it."

"Most stars play 'strong football'—or traditional football."

"If others are fast, they're faster."

"If others are strong, they're stronger."

"If others shoot well, they shoot better."

"Lionel Messi plays 'talent football.' His touch is unmatched—something no one can replicate."

"And then there are players like me—we play 'weak football.'"

"We lack speed and physical dominance, so we maximize our ball control."

"We can't rely on physical battles, so we expand our movement and positioning."

"We may not have flashy footwork, so we use other parts of our body to control and move the ball, creating unique styles."

"Right now, you're following the path of 'strong football.'"

"But your real strength isn't just that."

"Your greatest ability is your adaptability—your ability to learn."

"You can absolutely master this 'weak football'… or even something beyond it."

"Cristiano Ronaldo," Kai said quietly,

"be grateful for this difficult phase."

"It's your chance to surpass yourself—again and again."

This conversation stayed with Ronaldo for a long time.

Was Kai telling the truth?

About himself? Not entirely.

Kai's passing ability came from other influences—things he didn't explain.

But about Ronaldo?

He wasn't lying at all.

Ronaldo's greatest strength wasn't his body.

It was his discipline.

That discipline could turn into unmatched learning ability.

Anything that could be learned—he could master.

Years later, even at 37, when his physical abilities declined, Ronaldo adapted.

He developed excellent link-up play, positioning, and passing threat.

Simple. Efficient. Deadly.

His chest control, in particular, became almost artistic.

People once said he lacked hold-up play.

But when he finally used these skills, it became clear—

He had always been capable.

He just didn't need them before.

Because back then…

The entire team existed to serve him.
