Amsterdam Arena – Attrition Begins
16th minute.
Sporting CP striker Lourenço dropped deep and helped create space.
Cristiano Ronaldo carried the ball forward, reached the top of the penalty area, and unleashed a long shot that nearly found the net.
That strike clearly showed the attacking threat of the "three-center" tactic.
Immediately, Wesley Sneijder shifted from attacking midfield to a deeper defensive midfield role, helping deal with Sporting's three central attackers.
19th minute.
Sneijder contributed on both ends, winning the ball and launching a long pass from deep, trying to connect with Rafael van der Vaart.
But Miguel Veloso, who was tightly marking van der Vaart, stepped in front of him and powered the ball away with a header.
Don't forget — Veloso had played as a center-back during the first half of the season.
Defending. Physical duels. Blocking lanes.
That was his territory.
He wasn't slow either.
Van der Vaart was brilliant at almost everything — except raw pace.
Take care of him.
Crush him physically.
24th minute.
An Ajax player slipped a through ball toward van der Vaart.
Veloso immediately got tight, shoulder to shoulder. Van der Vaart fell during the collision and lost possession.
The referee waved play on.
30th minute.
In midfield, Deng Kai stepped in and intercepted another long diagonal from Sneijder.
Sneijder's passing was elite.
But trying to break Sporting from deep while ignoring Deng Kai?
That would be treating him like a fool.
33rd minute.
Van der Vaart struggled to find space under Veloso's man-marking. Even when he received the ball, he could only lay it off quickly.
To escape the pressure, he began dropping deeper.
This time, he finally received the ball cleanly—
—but before he could turn, Deng Kai slid in and brought him down.
For a defender, stopping a player who receives the ball with his back to goal is crucial.
Because once that player turns, defending becomes ten times harder.
Whether it was Manchester City or Liverpool in later years, elite teams all shared one trait:
They never allowed opponents to turn and face goal comfortably.
The referee blew his whistle and warned Deng Kai.
Sporting players had fouled van der Vaart multiple times while preventing him from turning. One more, and a yellow card would follow.
Deng Kai nodded in understanding.
But the look he shot at van der Vaart clearly said:
Next time you receive it, I'll do it again.
Yeah.
I'm not changing a damn thing.
Manchester United – Tactical Realization
Back in Manchester, Paul Scholes let out a long breath.
"What's wrong, Paul? Tired?" Sir Alex Ferguson asked.
Scholes shook his head.
"I just didn't expect to see this kind of ruthlessness in a fourteen-year-old."
Ferguson frowned.
Scholes continued:
"Van der Vaart has been heavily restricted. Veloso's man-marking is making him uncomfortable."
Ferguson replied calmly:
"But van der Vaart is adapting. Veloso isn't as effective as he was at the beginning. Now Deng Kai has to join in defensively."
"If this continues, once van der Vaart adjusts in the second half, he'll threaten Sporting again. And then it's over."
Scholes smiled faintly.
"Van der Vaart thinks that too."
"But what if Veloso's goal was never to restrict him?"
The room fell silent.
Not restrict him?
Then what?
Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole reacted almost simultaneously.
"He's making too many little moves!"
As strikers, they knew this trick well.
Elbow someone when shielding the ball.
Nudge them when they're not looking.
Constant contact.
The goal?
Drain stamina.
Break mentality.
Scholes nodded.
"Veloso's real target is van der Vaart's legs."
"He's forcing constant physical confrontation. Look at his neck veins when they clash — he's working at full intensity."
"To shake him off, van der Vaart is making more explosive sprints. More sudden stops. More direction changes."
"That burns energy."
Jaap Stam frowned.
"But what's the point? They're already two-nil down. If it ends like this, Sporting lose."
"They can't seriously wait until van der Vaart is completely exhausted before attacking, can they?"
"That would take seventy minutes."
"No team trailing 2–0 waits seventy minutes to fight back."
Scholes nodded slowly.
"That's why I couldn't believe it at first."
"How much confidence must a player have to try this?"
"How much trust in his forwards?"
"If he fails, people will say he gave up early. He'll look like the biggest idiot on the pitch."
"And while they're sacrificing the wings to exhaust van der Vaart, Sneijder can still create danger from deep."
"If they concede again… what then?"
"Do they still persist?"
"Attrition tactics only work if you commit to them completely. Half-measures are useless."
The Pressure Builds
Scholes' fears began unfolding.
With Sneijder pushed deep, Ajax relied mostly on long balls toward van der Vaart.
Ground passes were intercepted by Deng Kai.
Aerial balls were contested by Veloso.
For a while, van der Vaart was isolated.
Recognizing this, Sneijder switched the play wide.
34th minute.
Ajax worked the ball down the flank and nearly created danger with a cross.
36th minute.
Another wing attack — corner kick.
From the corner, Ajax hit the post.
Sporting survived by inches.
41st minute.
Cristiano Ronaldo dropped deep again, using his individual ability to create space before slipping a pass to Marcelino.
Marcelino challenged Ajax's center-back.
If he won it, he'd have a clear shooting chance.
It was Sporting's best opportunity in minutes.
But Marcelino lacked the strength. The defender won the duel cleanly.
43rd minute.
Ronaldo dropped again, combining quickly with Lourenço in a one-two.
Ronaldo's talent was obvious.
Maybe not as dazzling as van der Vaart.
But clearly superior to ordinary players.
Marcelino received another chance.
His long shot was saved.
He clutched his head in disbelief.
Sporting looked like a trapped beast.
Limited chances.
Three forwards constantly retreating and sprinting, draining stamina.
When opportunities finally came, the shots were weak or off target.
Disaster Strikes
44th minute.
The worst-case scenario Scholes feared arrived.
Sporting's corner was cleared.
Sneijder collected and launched a precise long pass toward van der Vaart.
Veloso had gone forward for the corner and couldn't recover in time.
Van der Vaart controlled the ball.
Two defenders in front of him.
Didn't matter.
With brilliant dribbling, he cut past both and faced the goalkeeper one-on-one.
Pilar rushed out aggressively.
Van der Vaart finished with cold precision.
Goal.
3–0.
The master was unstoppable.
