Chapter 43 - Scene 43: Cyan Date (+)

‎Lanterns swayed gently overhead.

‎Soft light spilled across the street in warm hues—gold, amber, faint traces of cyan where magic intertwined with flame.

‎Lumeris breathed around them.

‎Voices overlapped in easy harmony—laughter, bargaining, distant music drifting from somewhere unseen.

‎And yet—

‎Between them—

‎Silence.

‎Not too close.

‎Not too far.

‎Not the comfortable kind.

‎Not the quiet that settles naturally between two people at ease.

‎A careful distance.

‎Measured.

‎Almost deliberate.

‎A silence filled with awareness.

‎With hesitation.

‎With thoughts that refused to stay quiet.

‎Null walked beside her.

‎Hands in his pockets.

‎Posture relaxed.

‎Expression calm.

‎…Okay, ..A complete lie.

‎Inwardly—

‎Absolute chaos.

‎…What do I do?

‎His gaze flickered ahead, then briefly toward her—then immediately away.

‎This is bad.

‎This is really bad.

‎I asked her out… and I have absolutely no plan.

‎A pause.

‎Brilliant, Null. Truly brilliant.

‎He exhaled slowly.

‎I should've listened to Fantasy Omniscience-san…

‎A faint mental groan.

‎I literally have an ability that could've mapped out this entire city for me…

‎But no—

‎'Let's keep it natural.'

‎'Let it flow.'

‎'First date should be authentic.'

‎His eye twitched slightly.

‎Authentic my ass.

‎And Natural, he said.

‎This is not natural.

‎This was a slow, dignified descent into romantic disaster.

‎'....'

‎But then again

‎A beat.

‎This is my first date too, okay?!

‎A defensive thought rose instinctively.

‎You can't expect perfection here.

‎Still—

‎His shoulders lowered slightly.

‎…But I invited her.

‎I should've been prepared.

‎Beside him—

‎Sora walked with the same steady grace she always carried.

‎Composed.

‎Elegant.

‎Unshaken.

‎Serene expression.

‎Untouchable composure.

‎…On the outside.

‎Inside—

‎A completely different story.

‎Why is it so quiet…?

‎Her fingers lightly clutched the edge of her dress.

‎Isn't this supposed to be… different?

‎Her gaze flickered—briefly—to him.

‎Then forward again.

‎Too quickly.

‎Should I say something?

‎A pause.

‎What do I even say?

‎Another pause.

‎'Hmm, thank you for asking me on this date'?

‎Her ears warmed.

‎No.

‎That sounds ridiculous.

‎A beat.

‎Her eyes flickered toward him for a fraction of a second—

‎Then immediately forward again.

‎No, that would be strange…

‎Would it?

‎Then… what do couples talk about?

‎A small spiral of thoughts began forming.

‎Isn't this what people do on a date?

‎Talk? Laugh?

‎A beat.

‎Why am I not doing that?

‎Her heartbeat—

‎Still not calm.

‎Still loud.

‎Still very aware of the person walking beside her.

‎I know this city better than anyone…

‎I should be guiding him…

‎Her steps slowed just slightly—

‎Then steadied again.

‎Then why am I waiting for him to lead?

‎A pause.

‎Because…

‎Her cheeks warmed faintly.

‎…he asked me out.

‎Another pause.

‎So it's natural for him to…

‎Her thoughts trailed.

‎…Right?

‎Silence.

‎Then—

‎A quiet realization.

‎I don't know how this works…

‎They continued walking.

‎Side by side.

‎Close—

‎But not close enough.

‎Their shoulders never brushed.

‎Their hands never met.

‎The distance between them—

‎Carefully maintained.

‎Almost deliberately.

‎Say something.

‎Null.

‎Sora, say something.

‎Sora.

‎"…Nice weather."

‎Idiot.

‎"…The lanterns are pretty."

‎That was obvious.

‎Both spoke internally.

‎Neither spoke aloud.

‎A couple passed by them.

‎Laughing.

‎Hands intertwined.

‎Effortless.

‎Natural.

‎Sora's gaze lingered for a second—

‎Then shifted away.

‎Null noticed.

‎Pretended not to.

‎The silence stretched.

‎Longer.

‎Heavier.

‎More unbearable with each passing step.

‎This is painful.

‎Null finally admitted internally.

‎I'd rather fight that lion again than deal with this.

‎A pause.

‎…Okay, maybe not.

‎Another pause.

‎But still.

‎Sora inhaled slowly.

‎This is… difficult…

‎A beat.

‎Why does this feel harder than negotiations with empires…

‎And then—

‎At the exact same time—

‎Both of them reached the same conclusion.

‎I can't keep doing this..

‎Null coughed lightly.

‎"Ahem."

‎Sora immediately turned her gaze toward him.

‎"…Yes?"

‎He scratched his cheek slightly.

‎"…Let's—uh…"

‎His eyes scanned the surroundings quickly.

‎Stalls.

‎Shops.

‎Lights.

‎People.

‎Pick something. Anything.

‎"…Check out those stalls."

‎Smooth.

‎Very smooth.

‎Sora blinked once.

‎Then nodded.

‎"…Yes."

‎Relief.

‎Subtle.

‎But very real.

‎They moved toward a cluster of lively stalls.

‎Snacks.

‎Accessories.

‎Jewelry shimmering under enchanted lights.

‎The atmosphere shifted slightly.

‎Less tense.

‎More… active.

‎They stopped at a drink stall.

‎Glass containers floated mid-air, filled with glowing liquids—colors shifting like captured sunsets.

‎Null glanced at them.

‎"…These look interesting."

‎Sora nodded.

‎"…They're mana-infused refreshments."

‎"…Figures."

‎He muttered.

‎"Two of those."

‎Null pointed casually.

‎The vendor smiled, preparing the drinks.

‎Moments later—

‎Two glowing beverages were handed over.

‎Beautiful.

‎Hypnotic.

‎"…That'll be 12 silver."

‎Silence.

‎Null froze.

‎…Ah.

‎A slow realization dawned.

‎Then—

‎A devastating one.

‎Wait.

‎Money.

‎His expression remained calm.

‎Perfectly calm.

‎Too calm.

‎I have none.

‎A deeper pause.

‎I have less than none.

‎Fifteen days in this world.

‎No income.

‎No savings.

‎No backup.

‎…This is catastrophic..

‎A pause.

‎I've been in this world for fifteen days.

‎Another pause.

‎I don't even have enough money to survive on my own.

‎The internal collapse was catastrophic.

‎…This is the worst timing possible.

‎The vendor blinked.

‎"…Sir?"

‎Null smiled.

‎A very small smile.

‎A very strained smile.

‎"…One moment."

‎Before the situation could deteriorate further—

‎A hand appeared beside him.

‎Calm.

‎Steady.

‎Elegant.

‎Sora.

‎She handed over a pristine white card.

‎The vendor's eyes widened slightly.

‎His posture straightened instantly.

‎Respect replaced casual tone.

‎"…Ah."

‎A small bow.

‎"… Are you a priest from the revered sanctum."

‎A warm smile.

‎"Haha, no wonder you carry such grace, Young miss"

‎He accepted the card carefully.

‎"Of course. 50% discount applies."

‎Transaction complete.

‎Seamless.

‎Effortless.

‎Null stood there.

‎Very still.

‎…I see.

‎Moments later—

‎They sat on a nearby bench.

‎Each holding a glowing drink.

‎Soft light reflecting on their faces.

‎Silence again.

‎But this time—

‎Different.

‎Null took a small sip.

‎Then looked away slightly.

‎Avoiding her gaze.

‎Sora noticed.

‎Of course she did.

‎And then—

‎A soft sound broke the quiet.

‎A laugh.

‎Melodious.

‎Light.

‎Unrestrained.

‎Null blinked.

‎Turning slightly toward her.

‎"…Null-san."

‎Her voice carried warmth.

‎Gentleness.

‎"…Don't look so down."

‎A small smile lingered on her lips.

‎"It's understandable why you weren't able to pay."

‎A pause.

‎"Cheer up."

‎Her eyes softened.

‎"Leave paying to me."

‎Null exhaled slowly.

‎Then shook his head slightly.

‎"…No."

‎A pause.

‎"…It's not just that."

‎His voice lowered.

‎More honest.

‎More real.

‎"…I've been so nervous…"

‎A faint, self-aware smile.

‎"…since asking you out last night…"

‎His grip tightened slightly around the cup.

‎"…that I forgot to prepare properly."

‎A breath.

‎"…Even though I'm the one who suggested this."

‎He looked at her then.

‎Directly.

‎"…Sora… I sincerely apologize."

‎She blinked.

‎Then immediately shook her head.

‎"…No, Null-san."

‎Her voice firm.

‎But gentle.

‎"If that's the case…"

‎A small pause.

‎"…then I should apologize too."

‎He frowned slightly.

‎"…You?"

‎She nodded.

‎"…Yes."

‎Her gaze lowered slightly.

‎"…I was also nervous as well."

‎A faint blush returned.

‎"…since last night."

‎A pause.

‎"…At the thought of going on a date with you."

‎Null stilled.

‎Sora continued.

‎"…I didn't consider your situation."

‎"…And let you take the lead."

‎Her fingers tightened slightly around her drink.

‎"…Even though I'm the one most familiar with Lumeris."

‎A breath.

‎Then—

‎She looked at him.

‎Clear.

‎Resolved.

‎"…So no more of that."

‎A small smile.

‎Warm.

‎Assured.

‎"…Leave everything to me."

‎A pause.

‎"…And just focus on enjoying this."

‎Her eyes softened.

‎"…We'll figure things out together."

‎Silence.

‎"…Sora…"

‎Null looked at her.

‎Really looked at her.

‎Something shifted in his expression.

‎Softened.

‎Moved.

‎Then—

‎A faint smile.

‎Different from before.

‎"…Thanks."

‎A small pause.

‎But then—

‎He shook his head lightly.

‎"…But I don't like this feeling."

‎She tilted her head.

‎"…Feeling?"

‎"…This."

‎He looked away slightly.

‎"…Relying on you."

‎A quiet exhale.

‎"…It feels… shameful."

‎A beat.

‎"…I'm supposed to be the guy here."

‎Sora blinked.

‎Then—

‎A very small smile formed.

‎"…Then."

‎A faint smile curved her lips..

‎"…Next time."

‎Null looked back at her.

‎"…'If' there is a next time."

‎His voice carried a hint of determination now.

‎"…I'll make it up to you."

‎A beat.

‎Sora smiled.

‎Warm.

‎Soft.

‎Genuine.

‎"…Alright."

‎The glow of their drinks dimmed gradually.

‎Last sips.

‎Soft clinks.

‎A quiet end to something small—

‎Yet important.

‎Sora rose first.

‎Smoothly.

‎Gracefully.

‎As she always did.

‎The soft fabric of her dress settled around her like falling light.

‎For a brief moment—

‎She simply stood there.

‎Facing him.

‎Null looked up.

‎And then—

‎Sora extended her hand.

‎Not abruptly.

‎Not hesitantly.

‎Just… naturally.

‎A small gesture.

‎Simple.

‎Uncomplicated.

‎At the same time—

‎Her other hand moved instinctively.

‎Tucking a loose strand of white hair behind her ear.

‎A small motion.

‎But somehow—

‎It made everything feel… softer.

‎More real.

‎More her.

‎"…Come."

‎Her voice was gentle.

‎Quiet.

‎But this time—

‎There was no hesitation in it.

‎Null blinked once.

‎Looking at her hand.

‎Then at her face.

‎A pause.

‎Very small.

‎But meaningful.

‎…Oh.

‎Something in his chest shifted.

‎Again.

‎Not dramatic.

‎Not overwhelming.

‎Just—

‎Warm.

‎He reached out.

‎Slowly.

‎As if making sure this moment wasn't something fragile enough to break.

‎Then—

‎His hand met hers.

‎Lightly.

‎Warm.

‎For a second—

‎Neither of them moved.

‎Because the contact itself—

‎Was new.

‎Unfamiliar.

‎Real.

‎Sora felt it immediately.

‎The warmth.

‎The presence.

‎The fact that this—

‎Was happening.

‎Her fingers stiffened—

‎Just slightly—

‎Before relaxing.

‎Null, on the other hand—

‎Froze internally.

‎…This is dangerous.

‎Not because it was wrong.

‎But because—

‎It felt right.

‎Too right.

‎"…Lead the way."

‎He said quietly.

‎Sora nodded.

‎A small motion.

‎But this time—

‎There was something different in her expression.

‎Confidence.

‎Not the composed Saintess.

‎Not the distant figure.

‎Just—

‎A girl.

‎And so—

‎She took a step forward.

‎And this time—

‎He followed.

‎Not beside her.

‎With her.

‎Their hands remained lightly intertwined.

‎Not tightly.

‎Not boldly.

‎But enough.

‎The distance between them—

‎Gone.

‎Lantern light danced across their joined hands.

‎Soft.

‎Fleeting.

‎Beautiful.

‎And as they stepped back into the living pulse of Lumeris—

‎Something had undeniably changed.

‎The awkwardness hadn't vanished.

‎The uncertainty hadn't disappeared.

‎But now—

‎There was something else mixed into it.

‎Something warmer.

‎Something gentler.

‎Something that made the silence feel less like a barrier—

‎And more like a space they were beginning to share.

‎And just like that—

‎The date truly began.
