The air at eighty thousand feet did not smell like Sector 4.
Sector 4 smelled of boiled hydraulic fluid, wet ozone, and the sour, metallic tang of unwashed synthetic flesh. The atmosphere surrounding the transit rail to the Upper Spire was clean, artificially chilled, and scented with a microscopic spray of synthetic lavender—a corporate aerosol deployed every forty-five seconds to ensure high-tier executives did not have to experience the indignity of ambient oxygen.
Vanta sat in a plush, velvet-upholstered corner booth inside a private first-class observation car.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling quartz windows, the cloud layer fell away like a sheet of white cotton, revealing the sprawling, needle-sharp towers of the High Board's financial district. Solar sails caught the crisp, unfiltered sunlight, gleaming like spun glass against the sky.
Inside the car, the air was silent.

Vanta flexed his right hand. The liquid carbon plating moved across his knuckles with the fluid, silent grace of mercury sliding over black glass. There was no whistling valve in his knee. There was no rusted sanitation pipe grinding against his sternum. His chest plate was a smooth, seamless expanse of pure, light-swallowing dark matter that made the sunlight hitting his lap simply vanish into a non-reflective void.
"Boss," Spike whispered, floating out from behind Vanta's left shoulder. The little repair drone had installed a sleek, polished aluminum casing to match Vanta's upgraded aesthetic, though its single optical lens was still spinning nervously. "We're four minutes out from the High Spire Interchange. The automated manifest scanner on this train is running a Class-A biometric audit every sixty seconds."
"Let it run," Vanta said, his deep baritone vibrating quietly in his chest without disturbing the air around them. "A Class-A audit searches for unregistered scrap-rats, unregistered cybernetics, and unauthorized weapons."
"And what are you?" Spike asked.
"A structural error in their inventory system," Vanta deadpanned, his golden eye-ring narrowing slightly as he looked out at the approaching golden spire of the Aethelgard Corporate Hegemony.
The sliding door at the front of the observation car hissed open.
Three figures stepped into the quiet luxury of the lounge. They didn't wear the heavy, industrial exosuits of the forge guards, nor the pristine ivory plates of the cathedral sentinels. These were Hegemony Asset Retrieval Operatives (Level 32). They wore sleek, dark-blue tailor-made suits crafted from kinetic-weave thread, reinforced with hidden mono-molecular shoulder pads and polarized, gold-rimmed monocles over their left eyes.
The lead operative—a tall man with silver-streaked hair, a manicured beard, and a high-frequency shock-rapier resting at his hip—stopped in the center aisle. He adjusted his white silk gloves, his gold monocle humming as it ran a high-density scan across the cabin.
"Attention, valued passenger," the Lead Operative said, his voice smooth, cultured, and entirely devoid of human warmth. "I am Senior Asset Collector Vance-Seven. The central rail matrix detected an unauthorized mass spike entering this carriage at the lower forge interchange. A surplus of approximately two hundred and forty pounds of unmetered dark-density alloy."
Vanta didn't move. He remained seated in the velvet booth, one arm resting casually along the back of the cushion, his featureless black face turned toward the window.
"You are speaking to a customer," Vanta noted softly.
Collector Vance-Seven let out a polite, dry chuckle, flicking a speck of dust off his kinetic-weave lapel. "A customer purchases a ticket, sir. A customer possesses an account number with the Board. A customer has a registered tax-identification code embedded into their optic nerve. You, according to my optical diagnostic, do not exist."
"Then you are talking to the scenery," Vanta replied.
The two operatives behind Vance-Seven subtly shifted their weight, their hands sliding inside their tailored jackets toward their concealed mono-molecular sidearms.
"My monocle reads your light absorption coefficient at ninety-nine point nine percent," Vance-Seven continued, taking a slow, measured step toward Vanta's table. "That is not a commercial-grade alloy. That is military-grade nano-compressed dark matter, stolen from the Sector 4 Master Fabrication Tank less than thirty minutes ago. You also appear to have liquidated my cousin, Fabricator-Captain Vance."
Vanta finally turned his head. The single, brilliant gold ring in the center of his black face burned with a cold, deadpan clarity.
"Your cousin was poorly calibrated," Vanta said. "His center of gravity was four inches too high, and his plasma torch was wildly inefficient. I did him a favor by converting his battery into a permanent upgrade."
Vance-Seven's smile faded, his posture stiffening as his silk-gloved hand closed around the hilt of his shock-rapier.
"The Aethelgard Hegemony does not recognize unauthorized upgrades," Vance-Seven said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, professional register. "You are corporate property, scrap-rat. You will surrender your chassis for molecular reclamation, or we will depressurize this carriage and drop your carcass into the clouds."

"Spike," Vanta said, not taking his golden eye off Vance-Seven.
"Yeah, boss?"
"What is the current altitude?"
"Eighty-four thousand feet above sea level, boss," Spike chirped, flying up to grab a crystal decanter from the bar cart. "Wind velocity outside is roughly two hundred knots. Temperature is minus forty Celsius."
"Excellent," Vanta murmured.
He uncrossed his legs and stood up.
He didn't make a sound. No metal clicked; no hydraulics hissed. Thanks to Void Stride, a six-foot-four apex predator composed of dense, light-swallowing dark matter rose from the velvet booth with less acoustic noise than a falling feather.
Vance-Seven's gold monocle flashed red, drowning in a flood of urgent system warnings.

"Shoot him," Vance-Seven ordered, stepping back fast. "Purge the carriage!"
The two operatives behind him drew their weapons in a flash of trained, high-tier synchronization. Their mono-molecular sidearms cleared their holsters in 0.12 seconds, the high-frequency barrels humming as they aimed directly for Vanta's chest.
They fired.
Two high-density kinetic rounds, designed to punch through light tank armor, tore through the air at four thousand feet per second.
Vanta didn't bother dodging. He didn't raise a shield. He simply stood there, his hands loose at his sides.
CRACK-CRACK.
The kinetic rounds hit his dark-matter chest plate at point-blank range. But instead of shattering his frame or mushrooming against armor plating, the bullets hit the Vanta-black surface and simply... stopped.
No sparks. No recoil. No sound.
The Tier 2 dark matter devoured the kinetic energy instantly, absorbing the momentum of the tungsten rounds and converting the force into a localized gravitational pulse. The bullets didn't bounce off; they flattened into thin, lifeless foil disks and slid down his seamless chest, falling onto the carpet with two soft, insignificant pats.

The two operatives stared at their guns, then at the flat foil disks on the floor, their optical HUDs completely failing to calculate what had just happened to four thousand feet per second of pure velocity.
"My turn," Vanta deadpanned.
He moved.
To the operatives, Vanta didn't cross the distance between them—the space simply ceased to exist. In a fraction of a millisecond, Vanta appeared directly between the two shooters. He didn't punch them. He simply raised both arms, extending two fingers on each hand, and tapped their tailored kinetic jackets right over their center of mass.
[Release: Stored Kinetic Energy (6,000 Joules per Vector)]
BOOM.
The stored kinetic force from their own bullets erupted outward in two silent, invisible shockwaves. The two Level 32 Asset Collectors didn't even have time to scream as the kinetic inversion blew out the back of their tailored suits, launching them backward through the rear quartz window of the carriage.
The heavy glass shattered into a million glittering diamonds.
Instantaneous atmospheric decompression hit the observation car. An eighty-knot gale of freezing, minus-forty-degree air roared through the cabin, ripping away the velvet curtains, the silk napkins, and the crystal decanters, sucking everything toward the yawning void of the high-altitude sky.
Vance-Seven shrieked, his silk gloves scrambling frantically as he grabbed the edge of a heavy bronze table anchored to the floorboards. His tie whipped wildly in the freezing wind, his gold monocle cracking under the extreme air pressure.
Vanta stood in the exact center of the storm.
His dark-matter chassis didn't budge an inch. The eighty-knot gale hit his light-swallowing frame and simply flowed around his aerodynamic curves, completely unable to find leverage against his calibrated weight. He looked like an anchor forged from black iron, standing serene in the middle of a hurricane.
He walked calmly toward Vance-Seven, his boots making no sound against the tearing carpet.
"Wait!" Vance-Seven howled over the roar of the wind, his knuckles turning white as his grip on the bronze table began to slip. "Wait! I am a Senior Collector! I have executive clearance! I can give you an account number! I can give you ten million corporate credits!"
Vanta stopped two inches from the man's face. He reached out, his long, razor-sharp dark-matter claws closing gently around the lapel of Vance-Seven's ruined jacket.
"I don't need credits," Vanta said, his deep, rumbling voice slicing through the roar of the freezing gale with terrifying clarity. "I need to know which floor the Grandmaster keeps his office on."
"Floor... Floor One-Hundred and Eight!" Vance-Seven screamed, his eyes wide with absolute, primal terror as he looked down at the clouds eighty thousand feet below his dangling shoes. "The Executive Suite! Spire Alpha! Access code seven-seven-nine-four!"
"Thank you," Vanta deadpanned. "Your customer service has been exceptionally responsive."
"Now... pull me in!" Vance-Seven pleaded, tears freezing on his cheeks. "Pull me back inside!"
Vanta looked at the man's hand gripping the bronze table, then looked down at his own pristine, Vanta-black fingers.
"Your suit is rumpled," Vanta noted. "It ruins the aesthetic of the train."
With a single, effortless flick of his wrist, Vanta unpinned Vance-Seven's silk tie from his collar and let go of his lapel.
The Senior Asset Collector didn't even have time to curse before the eighty-knot wind seized him, ripping him away from the bronze table and launching him out into the crystal-blue sky, sending him tumbling down toward the distant cloud layer below.

Spike floated back into the carriage, using its tiny anti-grav thrusters to resist the wind, and used a small welder to rapidly fuse a steel emergency shutter over the broken quartz window. The roaring wind instantly died out, leaving the cabin quiet once more.
The little drone adjusted its aluminum casing and looked around the room. "Well, boss... the window is gone, but the velvet booth is still intact."
Vanta walked back to his seat, smoothed out the back of his dark-matter tunic, and sat down, looking out through the front viewing glass as the train began its final descent into the golden docking bay of Floor 108.
"Spike," Vanta said, his single golden eye-ring flaring softly in the ambient light.
"Yeah, boss?"
"Prepare my schedule for Floor 108. I have an executive meeting with the Board, and I intend to be early."
