Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: RESONANCE

Chapter 25: RESONANCE

The notification appeared while I was reviewing supply manifests.

[EXPERIENCE THRESHOLD REACHED]

[LEVEL UP!]

[YOU ARE NOW LEVEL 15]

[MAJOR MILESTONE: FOURTH MAIN FUNCTION UNLOCKED]

I stopped. Stared at the translucent text only I could see. Level fifteen. Four months of building, fighting, surviving—condensed into a number.

[RESONANCE BONDING SYSTEM: ACTIVE]

[YOU MAY NOW FORM BONDS WITH LOYAL CITIZENS]

[BONDS ALLOW TEMPORARY POWER BORROWING]

[REQUIREMENTS: 80+ LOYALTY, VOLUNTARY CONSENT, RESONANCE POINTS]

My hands started shaking.

Power. Real, usable power. Not just organization and planning. Actual abilities.

I pulled up the detailed explanation. The System was more talkative at major milestones.

[RESONANCE BONDING EXPLANATION:]

Through bonds formed with loyal citizens, the Host may temporarily access their abilities. This is not theft—it is shared power through mutual trust. Limitations apply:

Bond Tier determines power transfer percentage- Tier 1 (Faint): 20% of original power- Tier 2 (Moderate): 40% of original power

- Tier 3 (Strong): 60% of original power - Tier 4 (Deep): 80% of original power - Tier 5 (Perfect): 90% of original power Usage limits based on bond tier- Tier 1: 1 hour per day- Tier 2: 3 hours per day - Tier 3: 6 hours per day - Tier 4: 12 hours per day - Tier 5: 24 hours per day Requirements for bonding:- Citizen loyalty 80+- Voluntary, informed consent - Resonance Points expenditure (varies by power class) - Bond slot available (current: 4 slots) Power limitations:- Cannot bond Omega-class powers (reality-warping)- Cannot use multiple bonds simultaneously (until Level 25) - Cannot bond unwilling citizens - Bond can be severed by either party Bond advancement:- Tiers increase through time, trust, and shared experience- Maximum tier depends on relationship depth

I read it three times. Processing.

Ruth's super strength. Twenty percent of it would still be—I pulled up her profile—four tons of lifting capacity. Danny's fire at twenty percent would be devastating. Sofia's telepathy at even reduced strength would be incredible.

But it required consent. Voluntary. They had to agree.

And I'd have to tell them about the System. At least partially.

My hands were still shaking. Different reasons now. Not excitement. Fear.

What if they said no? What if learning about this made them distrust me? What if they thought I'd been planning to use them all along?

Stop. Breathe. Think.

I pulled up the citizen loyalty roster. Four people met the threshold.

Ruth Torres - Loyalty: 95 Danny Chen - Loyalty: 92

Sofia Reyes - Loyalty: 90 Miles Webb - Loyalty: 88

Ruth. She'd been there since the beginning. Church basement. The one-month trial she'd given me that turned into full commitment. She'd fought beside me. Trusted me with the community's safety.

If anyone would understand, it was her.

If anyone deserved to know first, it was her.

I found her running security drills in the yard. Twenty people practicing formation movements. She'd turned them from scared civilians into a functioning militia in three months.

"Marcus." She dismissed the group for a break. "Need something?"

"To talk. Privately."

Her expression shifted. "Serious?"

"Very."

We walked to my office. She sat across from me, waiting. Patient. Alert.

I'd never been good at this. Revealing secrets. Trusting people with information that could be used against me. But I'd built this place on trust. Time to extend it.

"I've never told anyone this," I started. Stopped. Started again. "You know my power is—unusual. Organizational. Building. That's what people think."

"But it's not?"

"It's more than that. It's—" I pulled out my notebook. Showed her population tracking, resource calculations, construction planning. All things she'd seen before. "I see data. About people. About resources. About what we need and when."

"Like a computer?"

"Sort of. It's called a System. It tracks everything. Levels, progress, capabilities. It's been guiding me since I arrived here."

She was quiet. Listening. Not interrupting.

"And today it unlocked something new. Something I need to ask you about. But first you need to understand—I didn't know about this. I wasn't planning it. It just became available."

"Marcus, you're rambling. Just tell me."

Right. Direct. That was Ruth's way.

"I can borrow powers. From people who trust me. Who agree to it. Temporarily. Limited. But real." I met her eyes. "The System calls it Resonance Bonding. It requires high loyalty, voluntary consent, and—and I wanted to ask you first."

Silence. Long enough that I started sweating.

Then: "Show me."

"What?"

"Show me. The System. Whatever it is you're seeing that I'm not."

"I—it's not visible to others. It's just me."

"Then describe it. Prove this isn't bullshit."

Fair. I pulled up her profile. Read it aloud. "Ruth Torres. Age 31. Power: Super Strength, Gamma-class. Lift capacity: Twenty tons. Enhanced durability. Loyalty score: 95. Combat effectiveness: Exceptional. First bond candidate—" I stopped.

Her face had gone very still. "Loyalty score. You've been tracking that?"

"The System tracks it. I see it. I don't—I can't control what it shows me."

"And mine's 95. Out of what, 100?"

"Yes."

"Who else is high?"

I hesitated. "Danny at 92. Sofia at 90. Miles at 88. Tom at 85."

She leaned back. Processing. "So you've known who trusts you. This whole time."

"Yes."

"And you used that information to—what? Manipulate us?"

"No. I used it to know who I could trust with responsibility. Who needed support. Who was struggling. It's not manipulation—it's management."

"That's a fine fucking line."

"I know."

More silence. I waited. Let her process.

"This bonding thing," she said finally. "Explain it. Specifically."

I did. The tiers. The limits. The requirements. That it was voluntary. That either party could sever it.

"So you want to borrow my strength."

"I'm asking if you'd be willing. You can say no. No consequences. I just—you were the first person I thought of. The one I trust most."

She looked at her hands. Scarred knuckles. Hands that had built this place as much as mine. "When those bastards came for us with guns, you didn't hide behind me. You grabbed a pipe and fought. Terrible at it, but you fought."

"I remember."

"I've had commanders. Bosses. Leaders. Most used people. Spent them. You—" She paused. "You carry the weight so we don't have to. That's what you said after the battle. You meant it."

"I did."

She met my eyes. "If you want to borrow my strength? You can have it. You've earned that."

Relief flooded through me. "Thank you."

"But Marcus—if you fuck with my people, if you use this System thing to hurt anyone here, I will break you. Bond or no bond."

"Understood."

"Good." She stood. "So how do we do this?"
