Chapter 29: The Harkonnen Offer
Two days later, Turok called an emergency meeting.
The room was more crowded than usual. All senior people. Even runners who rarely attended strategy sessions. Something big was happening.
Turok stood at his desk. Behind him, a data pad showed figures I couldn't read from my position.
"We've received an offer," he announced. "From the Harkonnens."
The room went silent. Everyone knew the Harkonnens were supposed to be leaving. An offer from them now meant complications.
"They're planning a major operation. Soon. They want local assistance—guides, intelligence, staging support." Turok's eyes gleamed. "They're offering significant compensation. Water. Spice. Solari. Enough to clear every debt in this syndicate three times over."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. That much payment meant whatever they were planning was massive.
Mala's voice cut through the noise. "What kind of operation requires that much local support?"
"They didn't specify. Said details would come to anyone who committed." Turok paused. "But the payment suggests something large-scale. Coordinated."
I kept my face neutral. This was it. The Harkonnens recruiting local assets for the attack. Offering riches to anyone who'd help them slaughter the Atreides.
"Sounds like a trap," someone said. Jorik, from the back. "Harkonnens don't pay premium for small jobs. And they eliminate witnesses."
"Or," Turok countered, "it means the Atreides are about to fall. And those who help will be remembered when the Harkonnens resume control."
"The Atreides just took over," Mala said carefully. "Why would they fall already?"
"Politics." Turok waved dismissively. "Imperial games. Who knows? Who cares? The question is: do we take the offer?"
Silence. Everyone calculating. The payment was enormous. But the risk...
I spoke up. "If they're offering this much, the operation is dangerous. Massive operations mean witnesses get eliminated. We'd be tools that get discarded."
Turok looked at me. "You think we should refuse?"
"I think we should be cautious. Get more details before committing. Understand what we're actually agreeing to."
"Smart," Mala added. "Take a meeting. Hear specifics. Then decide."
Turok nodded slowly. "I'll arrange a follow-up. But I want a liaison—someone who can interface with their people if we proceed." His eyes swept the room. Landed on me. "Morvani. You've been handling our political intelligence. This fits your skillset."
Every instinct screamed to refuse. Getting closer to Harkonnen operations meant exposure risk. Discovery risk. Death risk.
But it also meant information. Critical intelligence about the attack timing, scale, specific plans. Information I could use to position for survival.
"I'll do it," I said. "If you decide to proceed."
"Good." Turok made notes. "Meeting is in three days. I'll have final decision by then."
The gathering broke up. Mala caught my arm in the corridor.
"You're playing with fire," she whispered.
"I know."
"Do you? Because the Harkonnens don't forgive mistakes. And whatever they're planning—" She glanced around. Lowered her voice further. "I have a bad feeling. My source died warning about irregular troop movements. Now they're recruiting locals. This smells like massacre preparation."
"That's why I need to be in the room. If it is a trap, we need to know before we're caught in it."
She studied me. "You have another angle. I can see it. You're playing more sides than just the syndicate."
Dangerous ground. But Mala was smart. She'd already figured out I had Atreides contacts.
"I'm ensuring we survive what's coming," I said carefully. "Whatever that is."
"Just..." She paused. "Just make sure you know which side you're on when things go bad. Because they're going bad, Kael. Soon."
She'd used my name. Not Morvani. Kael. Like she knew somehow that wasn't who I really was.
I left before she could ask more questions.
That night, I lay in my quarters thinking about the angles.
If I became the Harkonnen liaison, I'd have access to their operational plans. Timing. Targets. Troop positions. Everything I needed to ensure my own survival.
But I'd also be positioned between three factions: Atreides (through Duncan), Syndicate (through Turok), and Harkonnens (through this new role).
Triple agent. Each side thinking I was theirs. Each side potentially discovering I was playing them.
The System had warned that multiple allegiances created vulnerability. This would push that to the breaking point.
But information was survival. And right now, I needed every scrap of intelligence I could gather.
The System chimed.
[STRATEGIC POSITIONING DETECTED]
[POTENTIAL HARKONNEN ACCESS IDENTIFIED]
[RISK LEVEL: VERY HIGH]
[REWARD LEVEL: VERY HIGH]
[ASSESSMENT: HIGH-RISK, HIGH-REWARD STRATEGY]
[RECOMMENDATION: PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION]
[HR COST FOR TRIPLE-AGENT DECEPTION: -1% UPON COMMITMENT]
[CURRENT HR: 89%]
One percent for playing three sides against each other. For becoming the thing spies feared most—someone loyal to no one, playing everyone.
Down to 88% if I committed.
Twelve percent lost total. More than a tenth of my humanity.
But alive. Informed. Positioned.
I thought about Duncan's toast. To friends who watch our backs.
I thought about Turok's greedy eyes calculating profit.
I thought about Harkonnen agents offering blood money for betrayal.
And I thought about me, standing in the middle, collecting information from everyone and giving loyalty to no one.
The monster Venn had named.
The efficient survivor the System praised.
Same thing.
I closed my eyes. Made the decision.
When Turok finalized the meeting, I'd go. I'd gather every piece of intelligence. I'd position for survival.
And I'd let the fire burn around me while I walked through the flames.
Survivors chose who to save.
I'd chosen me.
Again.
Always.
