A long dark coat hung from his body, blending into the darkness behind him as the firelight flickered in front.

Veda sat still in silence.

His legs and torso. His cheek was swollen.
One eye slightly puffed, bruises lined his face and neck.
He looked like someone who had been broken, but still chose to sit upright.
Veda stared into the fire. The flames moved, crackling softly.
