Chapter 80: A Broken Pillar and a Flicker of Hope

Nagato's true objective in the sudden, brutal strike on the Fire Country's border defenses had been surgical: to eliminate Uchiha Shisui, a rising pillar of Konoha's future strength.

Though young, Shisui's prowess and reputation were formidable. Given time, he would undoubtedly become another Kage-level cornerstone for the Leaf. The night of the Nine-Tails had burned the power of the Uchiha clan—specifically Fugaku and Akira—into Nagato's memory. That two shinobi could stall and wound the ultimate tailed beast was a testament to a rare, dangerous caliber of strength.

To pave the way for his future plans of capturing the beasts, and to exact vengeance for Konoha's role in "Madara's" demise, Nagato had decided to begin systematically culling Konoha's elite. Shisui was a prime, symbolic target.

"Since Konoha possesses what appears to be Lord Madara's ocular power," Nagato mused to the empty forest, "future engagements will require swift, overwhelming force. No prolonged battles."

A flicker of grim satisfaction cut through his frustration. "Still… Uchiha Shisui was a breath from death. Even Tsunade of the Sannin would struggle to pull him back from that brink. For all intents and purposes… he is gone." The objective, though messier than hoped, was achieved.

"We will go quiet for now. Konoha will be on high alert. This tactic may not work again… they may even attempt to turn it into a trap." He turned, his silhouette dissolving into the heavy mist as he retreated back towards the Land of Rain.

Thousands of miles away, on a windswept, deserted coastline, space distorted. Uchiha Akira appeared, Uchiha Shisui's limp form in his arms.

He set Shisui down gently on the sand and immediately began pouring green medical chakra into the shattered body. For half an hour, he worked, his brow furrowed in concentration.

Finally, he sat back, a deep frown etched on his face. The injuries were catastrophic. Shisui had pushed himself far beyond his limits, burning chakra and ocular power to their dregs, consuming his very life force in the process. This wasn't just physical trauma; it was the hollowing out of his vitality, akin to Nagato's self-destruction when first summoning the Gedo Statue.

But Shisui was not Nagato. He lacked that bottomless well of borrowed vitality. The spark that remained was faint, barely sufficient to keep his body from shutting down entirely.

"Troublesome," Akira muttered.

The loss of vitality was one issue. The core problem was spiritual. The extreme overuse of the Mangekyō Sharingan had pushed Shisui's mind to the absolute precipice of collapse. A mental shattering would mean true, irreversible death.

His examination revealed more grim news. Shisui's Sharingan were on the verge of permanent blindness. Even if he miraculously recovered, he would never fight again.

He's finished as a shinobi.

"A true dilemma…" Akira sighed, shaking his head. He lifted Shisui once more. There was no healer in the world who could fix this. Maintaining this vegetative, half-dead state was possible, but restoring him to consciousness, let alone functionality, bordered on the impossible.

Deliberately waiting two days to allow the immediate crisis to pass and to mask the speed of his return, Akira finally carried Shisui back to Konoha.

After delivering him to the hospital and ensuring the Uchiha clan would oversee his care, Akira proceeded to the Hokage's office to deliver his report.

Upon hearing the news, Sarutobi Hiruzen went directly to the hospital, bypassing all protocol. In the sterile white room, he found Uchiha Fugaku already standing by the bed, speaking in low tones with the attending physician.

"Hokage-sama," Fugaku acknowledged flatly, his attention barely wavering from Shisui's pallid form.

"At ease," Hiruzen said, his own expression darkening as he took in the scene. In his eyes, Shisui was a rare jewel—an Uchiha who embodied the Will of Fire, a loyal son of the village, the spiritual heir to his old comrade Kagami. A future pillar, now broken.

"What is his precise condition?" Hiruzen demanded of the physician.

The medic, a seasoned professional, replied calmly. "Jonin Shisui's condition is critical. Severe chakra exhaustion and physical overexertion have drained his vital energy. Jonin Akira's intervention has stabilized him, but only at this baseline. Recovery of function is… unlikely."

"When will he wake? Can the lost vitality be restored?" Hiruzen pressed, a desperate edge in his voice.

"Regaining consciousness depends on whether his spirit can recover from its… fractured state. As for replenishing vitality…" The physician shook his head. "There is no known medical protocol for that. The specifics of his injuries… Jonins Fugaku and Akira would be more knowledgeable."

Hiruzen's gaze snapped to the two Uchiha.

"I'll explain," Akira offered. "Shisui fought Nagato to a standstill to cover the retreat. He pushed his ocular power beyond its breaking point. The backlash caused severe psychic trauma. Whether he wakes… is a matter of spiritual fortitude, not medicine."

"Is there truly no way?" Hiruzen's shoulders slumped slightly.

"Unless his lost vitality is somehow replenished, allowing his body to nourish his spirit back from the brink," Akira said, his tone indicating the circular, near-impossible nature of the problem.

Hiruzen let out a long, weary sigh. It was a vicious cycle. If such a method to restore vitality existed, the concept of a ninja's "prime" would be meaningless, their lifespans not measured in mere decades.

"Are you certain no such technique exists?" he asked once more, a final grasp at hope.

The attending physician could only shake his head. "Perhaps somewhere in the wider world, a secret art exists. But not within Konoha's knowledge."

The loss was staggering. Minato and Kushina, now Shisui. Three Kage-level assets gone within a month. The weight of it pressed down on the old Hokage as he looked at the motionless figure on the bed.

That night, a pall of grim silence and suppressed fury settled over the Uchiha district. The news of Shisui's fate was a fresh, bitter wound. The atmosphere was thick with unvented rage.

In Fugaku's private study, away from the clan's simmering anger, he and Akira sat across from each other.

"A tragedy for Shisui…" Fugaku said finally, shaking his head. He then shifted focus, his strategic mind already moving past grief to practicality. "You visited the research institute today. Any progress?"

Akira was the sole conduit for Shentian Biologics' reports. Fugaku trusted him with the details.

While Shisui's condition was a blow, it did not mean Fugaku had written him off. An Uchiha who had awakened the Mangekyō was a resource too precious to abandon. The reason for his question was a spark of cold hope: the clandestine research at Shentian might hold the key to exactly the kind of miraculous recovery that conventional medicine deemed impossible.
