Chapter 78 - Chapter 78: The Path of Pain and the Key of Balance

Chapter 78: The Path of Pain and the Key of Balance

"I was awakened from my dream," Nagato said, his voice gaining a steely edge, "when I held Yahiko's lifeless body in my own hands. My path is not to escape into a new illusion. It is to inherit Yahiko's dream. I will make the world understand pain—real pain—so that from that shared suffering, true understanding and peace can be forged."

He met Zetsu's gaze squarely, his Rinnegan glowing with a cold, unwavering light. "So, I must decline. I cannot fulfill Madara's dream of the Infinite Tsukuyomi on his behalf."

Black Zetsu sighed, a sound of theatrical disappointment. "Truly a pity. The Infinite Tsukuyomi is the only definitive path to peace. That is an irrefutable truth."

"The Infinite Tsukuyomi is a rejection of reality," Nagato countered, his tone growing more resolute. "A denial of humanity itself. If we deny even our own existence, what meaning does any peace hold? I will not do that. I will bring peace through my own methods, in this world."

"Nagato," Black Zetsu pressed, its voice dripping with false concern, "you still harbor hope for this wretched reality? Your methods will only breed more hatred. They will not foster understanding. You will merely fill the world with greater agony!"

"That's precisely the point!" Nagato's voice rose, filled with a fervent, tragic conviction. "Pain, hatred, suffering—they are intrinsic to the human condition. They are not meaningless flaws to be erased, but integral parts of our existence. It is through experiencing profound pain that we grow, that we learn to appreciate beauty, to cherish the fragile peace we might one day build!"

Seeing the absolute determination etched on Nagato's face, Black Zetsu knew its initial gambit had failed. Nagato was cut from a different cloth than Uchiha Madara or Obito. His psyche was not broken by loss; it was hardened, given purpose. He sought not to escape reality, but to violently reshape it.

"I see…" Black Zetsu feigned a resigned acceptance. "Then proceed with your vision, Nagato. And if you find that path leads only to a dead end… remember, the Infinite Tsukuyomi remains as a final recourse."

Nagato shook his head, a gesture of finality. "It does not matter. Even if I fail, I will not resort to an illusion to flee from reality. Failure is failure. I will accept it."

A flicker of something like genuine, if frustrated, appreciation crossed Black Zetsu's expression. "You are… remarkable. I believe Madara would be pleased to see your resolve."

Internally, however, it seethed with a quiet, millennia-old frustration. But it had no better option. After thousands of years of plotting, this was the closest it had come. Even an imperfect resurrection of Kaguya Ōtsutsuki—one not preceded by the global genjutsu—was preferable to another indefinite wait. The Ten-Tails could be revived, the chakra harvested. Details could be managed later.

With a semblance of solemn ceremony, Black Zetsu produced a large, ancient-looking scroll and offered it to Nagato. "This contains Madara's legacy. The Six Paths Ten-Tails Coffin Seal, the theory of the Infinite Tsukuyomi… it is all here. How you use this knowledge… is now your choice. I will interfere no further."

Nagato accepted the scroll, a complex mix of grief, responsibility, and renewed purpose swelling within him. "I will use it wisely. I will uncover who murdered Lord Madara… and I will have my vengeance."

His gaze turned westward, towards the Land of Fire. "We begin… with Konoha."

Konoha, Uchiha Clan Training Grounds.

The air thrummed with the aftermath of released energy. Uchiha Akira stood amidst a field of cracked earth and shattered timber, wiping sweat from his brow. He never neglected physical conditioning. Ninjutsu could be countered, absorbed, or negated. Pure, refined taijutsu—speed, strength, reaction—was a foundation that never became obsolete.

My current physical capabilities are nearing their natural limit, he assessed, studying the devastation. To increase destructive power further requires either a qualitative leap in chakra… or a Kekkei Genkai. His mind drifted to a specific bloodline limit. Boil Release…

The sound of approaching footsteps pulled him from his thoughts. Uchiha Jin, one of the security detail for the clan's covert research, approached, his eyes wide as he surveyed the training ground. "Incredible destructive power, Akira."

"Jin. Is there news from Shentian Biologics?" Akira asked, getting straight to the point. Jin's presence here almost certainly meant a summons.

"They're looking for you. Said to come as soon as possible."

As expected. Likely Yakushi Nono.

Minutes later, in Nono's orderly office at the Shentian facility, Akira found the former Root medic writing intently. She looked up as he entered. "Your intuition is as sharp as ever, Jonin Akira."

"You have results?"

"Two days ago," she confirmed, a hint of professional pride in her voice, "we achieved a stable, reproducible cloning protocol."

"So quickly?" Akira was genuinely impressed. In just over a year, her team had conquered one of the most complex biological frontiers.

"The technique is ready for application," Nono said, her expression turning serious, a note of warning entering her tone. "I must advise caution. The technical hurdles are solved. The ethical and moral abyss it opens… is another matter entirely."

"I am aware," Akira replied smoothly. "Which is why we pursued directed cloning from the start."

"True enough," Nono conceded with a nod. "On that front, however, progress is slower. No major breakthrough yet. It will require continued, significant investment."

After their discussion, Akira had just stepped out of Nono's office when another researcher, one from the more clandestine divisions, intercepted him, speaking in a hushed, urgent tone.

"President Akira, Team Leader Mizutani requests your presence immediately. He reports a major breakthrough in the… special transplantation project."

Mizutani Hiroshi. The lead researcher on the highly secretive Senju Hashirama cell integration project. A non-shinobi with a rare, intuitive grasp of chakra biology, hired for his brilliant, amoral mind and kept in check by the leverage the Uchiha held over his past indiscretions. Akira had entrusted him with Obito's unique corpse a month prior.

In a sterile, secure lab, Mizutani Hiroshi, a portly man with keen eyes, practically vibrated with excitement upon seeing Akira. "President! A monumental breakthrough!"

"Explain."

"It's the specimen you provided last month," Mizutani said, lowering his voice. "Studying its unique cellular structure… we've identified the core principle for successful integration of the 'Alpha Cells'." He paused for dramatic effect. "The key is… balance."

Akira's mind, always parsing information through multiple lenses, made the immediate connection. "Balance… You mean a balance of Yin and Yang?"
