Chapter 8 - Cain, The Foul

And it came to pass, when the voice of Cain fell silent and the night bore witness, that Abel lay upon the ground, and the earth received that which was not yet meant to return; and the ground was opened, not by command but by deed, and it drank of innocence, and the stain thereof was not hidden from heaven nor from the depths beneath.

And it came to pass on that same day, that the Lord Above, who dwelleth in the Pleroma, called unto Cain, saying, "Where is Abel thy brother?"

And Cain answered in a whisper, saying, "I know not… Am I my brother's keeper?"

And the blood of Abel cried from the ground, yet not unto the false lord, for it was not his to hear; and the earth, having opened its mouth, had received the blood from the hand of Cain. Therefore a curse was set upon him, and the ground was turned against him, so that when he labored upon it, it would no longer yield its strength, and he was made a restless wanderer upon the earth.

And Cain scowled, and he spake unto the false lord with bitterness in his voice, saying, "My punishment… is greater than I can bear. Thou hast driven me from this land, and from thy presence shall I be hidden; and I shall be a restless murderer upon the earth."

And Cain went forth and wandered without rest upon the earth, and the stain upon his hands did not depart from him; and he lifted his hand against man again and again, so that the ground was marked by his passing. And in time he fashioned for himself a blade of great sharpness, and by it he struck down even that which was called divine

And the name of Cain became feared among the sons of men, for wherever he wandered, blood and trembling followed after him; and the heavens kept silence concerning him.
