Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: Memories of the Past (Part 2): The Strength of the Weakest (Continued) .

"Jack, where are you going with all those backpacks?"

"I'm heading out for a bit to scavenge. We're running low on food and you're a total

glutton; I have no idea how you keep that figure."

"Hey! Don't push it. My body has nothing to do with how many calories I take in."

"Heh, must be my genetics then—letting me eat whatever I want without packing on the fat."

"Whatever you say, glutton. See you later!" "Be careful, please."

"Don't worry. I don't plan on dying. Ever."

Valentine smiled, bowing her head in silence—as if she felt guilty for not being able to help him.

"I told you, don't make that sad face every time I leave. I know you want to help, but first, I

need to find a way to regenerate your right leg." "I can't let them hurt you."

"It's okay... I'll get stronger. I'll always be waiting for you here, and I'll help however I

can."

"Cooking for both of us is plenty. You almost seem like a good wife," Jack called out with a grin.

Valentine's face turned bright red with embarrassment.

"Id... Idiot! Just go and do your thing," she snapped, trying to hide her blushing face.

Day One.

The day looked grim; the clouds were as black as coal and the sunlight was fading fast.

I need to find a supermarket soon and a place to train. But why is the city so quiet? I can't see a single monster.

Everything was still. The sky suddenly darkened. The rain began to let up, bit by bit.

Strong waves of electricity surged through me. I didn't understand what it meant or why I could feel the current racing through my entire being. Is an enemy using an ability? But I can't find them.

I started charging myself with electricity in case of a surprise attack. My veins hadn't bulged dark green since that day.

I need to find a way to reach that level again and show it to Valentine, so she can regenerate her leg. But... how?

"The only answer... is to fight until I make it happen!" Jack exclaimed, as several hideous monsters descended at full speed from the surrounding buildings.

"Wow... there's a lot of them! Doesn't matter... they're trash!" Jack roared, pulling a rocket launcher from the backpack on his back.

Several creatures lunged from the buildings straight for Jack's head—some opening their disgusting maws, others extending their claws.

Jack knelt instantly. He hoisted the rocket launcher onto his shoulders, aimed at the pack of creatures in front of him, and fired with everything he had. The creatures were sent flying in every direction.

"Dammit, it's not working! These bastards regenerate too fast!"

"Fine then... I'll crush them by hand!"

Jack dropped the rocket launcher and began charging with electricity again. "Time to train... Bring it on!"

Thousands of creatures swarmed to devour, claw, and scratch Jack's body.

There are so many... but in the end, they're just rotting meat!

"Tempo!"

I began to warm up my body, using electricity in my feet to close in on them one by one, shattering their skulls.

In 60 seconds: 50 were dead.

In 10 minutes: 500 were dead.

In 30 minutes: 1,500 were gone. "Tempo" deactivated.

Interesting... I didn't know I could keep that ability active for so long. However, I had to hide in an old room in a building to recover my energy. Even so, many of those disgusting things tried to smash through the door and walls to get inside.

"Dammit! Can't you see I need a few minutes of rest before I blow you all away? I just need five more minutes!" Jack shouted, his face twisted in disgust.

"It's time." I stood up slowly, extending my left hand as I charged it with electricity. I

thrust it toward the door; it went flying, taking at least ten of them out of the building.

What is this? For a second, my eyes could see the electricity inside the bodies of these beasts. How does it work? I'm going to find out!

Several creatures lunged again. Once more, I raised my right hand, covered in electricity, and my vision shifted from seeing their bodies to seeing the current within them. I lightly struck one in the arm; this time, the limb didn't fly off, but it went limp, and its electrical flow went dark.

Incredible! It's like I shut down the nervous system in its arm. Next step: Fire plus electricity.

My body began to be engulfed in flames while I maintained a constant electrical charge.

Several of them lunged at point-blank range. I raised my fist and detonated it with fire and

electricity against them; some were completely obliterated, others were split in half, and

others lost several limbs, unable to move. However, I'm still limited—I can't project the fire far from my body.

The fight ended, and those left alive crawled away to flee... or so I thought.

I deactivated everything, and the building I was in began to be demolished by a giant creature. It let out a roar:

"RAAAAAHHHH!"

"I'm out. Now's not the time to face that thing."

Day Two.

The sky was black, as dark as pitch. It was pouring rain, and the sun felt miles away. "RAAAAAHHHH!" a giant roared, blocking the path I planned to take.

"Get out of the way, you freak! I need to go that way and you're blocking my path." The giant swung a punch directly at me with all its might. I dodged it instantly. "Hey... wait, I wasn't ready yet," Jack whispered, touching his head in surprise.

Phew... that was a close one.

This time I tried something new: expanding the electricity outside my body as far as I could.

Radius of one kilometer, give or take... that's the distance between the giant and me.

"Ugh, this is exhausting," I muttered, wiping sweat from my forehead.

"RAAAAAHHHH!" the mountain-sized beast bellowed, swinging its left arm for another blow.

"Whoa, whoa! Wait, I'm still not ready!" Jack whispered again, touching his forehead. "Damn you!"

"Alright... batteries recharged. Here I go!"

Fire and electricity surged through my body. I lunged like a cat straight for its eyes and

slammed my right fist into them, bursting them instantly.

"Ruuuuaahhhh!" the giant screamed in pain, falling backward against a building while clutching its eyes.

"Heh... heh... hehehe. See ya, dummy!"

Day Three.

Boom... Boom.

Boom... Boom. Puchi... Puuchi, puuchi. Puuchi.

"Yo, name's Jack. It's a sunny day, the clouds are white, and they call me Jacky... Yeah,

uh-huh, uh-huh!"

"My hands are small, but if you look away, they'll wreck you. Honey."

Boom... Boom. Berrap, Berrap.

"I move like lightning. My body's burning up, and the fire's like the devil." "Follow it, baby!"

"Chica, chica, chica Baby. Uh-huh, Uh-huh."

"I move to the left... while I spin to the right and... what happened?"

"Nobody's attacking me, honey... dammit!"

Boom, Boom... Chicap, chicap.

"In church they told me... that fire was the devil's." "Uh-huh, Uh-huh."

"Lightning was God's, and that Genesis... was near." "Yeah... baby!"

Man, that rap was terrible.

"Still, it's weird that the city is so silent. Usually, I run into something that wants to eat me or test its strength against mine!" I called out, entering a small shop to look for food.

The shop was also completely still. I'll take what I need and head home.

"Oh... I found some beans. What a score!"

"It's Latin food, and it's really hard to find these days... but Valentine makes them so tasty."

I grabbed them and stuffed them into my backpack without a second thought.

"I would've liked to travel all over Latin America once... but the language barrier made life difficult. Now, that'll be impossible," I said, leaving the shop.

"Alright then, you bastards. Time to fight!" I shouted. No response. "Nobody?" "Fine. Heading home victorious!"

"Jack... what are you doing in the tub? You've been in the bathroom for an hour." "Dinner's ready! Come on, please!"

"Coming! I fell asleep, and the last thing I remember is... 'that rap was terrible!'"
