Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

The car smelled of premium leather and quiet wealth. It was a scent Gu Anran had never encountered before, a stark contrast to the rain-soaked concrete and exhaust fumes of the crowded city district she was leaving behind. She sat perfectly still, her hands folded in the lap of her worn jeans, a silent passenger in a life that was suddenly, inexplicably, not her own.

Outside, the sprawling metropolis faded into an exclusive, heavily guarded villa district, the neatly trimmed camphor trees standing like stoic sentinels guarding a world she was about to breach. The man beside her, a sharp-eyed family attorney named Lawyer Zhang, hadn't spoken much since picking her up from the cramped, low-rent apartment she shared with the woman she had always called her mother.

He was a person of sharp angles and starched collars, his words precise and devoid of warmth. "The Gu family is expecting you," was all he'd said, as if that fully explained the sleek black sedan, the hushed gravity, and the gnawing pit of anxiety in Anran's stomach.

For seventeen years, her life had been a predictable rhythm of school, exhausting part-time jobs, and the constant, low-level hum of financial worry. Love was a practical thing, shown in packed lunchboxes and mended clothes. Now, that simple existence had been fractured by a single, unbelievable phone call. A hospital's old clerical error and a national DNA database flag.

Words that held no meaning until Lawyer Zhang appeared at her door, his briefcase a Pandora's box of life-altering documents. The car turned onto a private estate road, the tires humming smoothly against the pristine asphalt. A set of immense, wrought-iron gates swung open without a sound, revealing a long, winding drive flanked by ancient trees. At the end of it, a massive luxury estate stood not just as a home, but as an undeniable declaration of power. It was a sprawling compound of pale stone and dark glass, surrounded by meticulous traditional courtyards. It looked cold, beautiful, and utterly impenetrable.Anran's breath caught in her throat.

This was the ancestral home of the Gu Corporation. The name had always been a headline, a commercial empire, a whisper of unimaginable wealth that had absolutely nothing to do with her. Until today.Lawyer Zhang led her up the grand marble steps and through a pair of towering double doors into a foyer that was larger than her entire apartment. The air was cool and still, smelling faintly of high-end wood polish and incense. A cavernous silence swallowed the sound of their footsteps on the polished stone floor.A man and a woman stood waiting near the base of a sweeping imperial staircase, their faces etched with a mixture of apprehension and disbelief.

They were impeccably dressed in tailored silk and fine wool, their posture rigid. Gu Tiancheng and Su Qing.Anran felt a strange, phantom pang of recognition, a ghost of features she saw in her own reflection. The sharp line of his jaw, the deep-set shape of her eyes. They were strangers, yet they were not. They looked at her as if she were a specter, a sudden problem that had materialized on their pristine doorstep."This is she," Lawyer Zhang announced, his voice echoing slightly in the vast space. "Gu Anran."Su Qing's hand went to her mouth, a delicate, manicured gesture that did nothing to hide the sudden tremor in her fingers. Gu Tiancheng's expression remained unreadable, a mask of stern corporate control.

He looked at Anran not with the warmth of a father finding a lost child, but with the critical, calculating eye of a chairman assessing a flawed asset."The tests are conclusive," Lawyer Zhang continued, opening his briefcase on a nearby dark mahogany table. He laid out a series of official documents, the clinical black-and-white text a stark testament to the chaos that had just been unleashed. "A 99.99 percent probability. Anran is your biological daughter."The words hung heavy in the air, suffocating and absolute. Biological daughter. It was a term of science, not of love. It explained the impossible, but it solved nothing. Anran looked from the legal papers to the faces of these two powerful strangers who were supposedly her parents. She saw no joy, no relief. She saw only the shattering of their perfectly curated, elite world."And the other girl?" Gu Tiancheng's voice was low, controlled.

"Chuyao?""Is the biological daughter of the woman who raised Anran," Lawyer Zhang confirmed. "It was a simple, devastating mistake during the hospital's chaotic system upgrade seventeen years ago. The facility has admitted full liability."A mistake. Seventeen years of her life, seventeen years of another girl's life, reduced to a single, sterile word.Anran felt a dizzying sense of dislocation, with her legs nearly giving up.

She was the rightful Gu family heiress.

The girl who had grown up in this palace, who had worn these fine clothes, who had been loved by these people, was an imposter.

And her, Anran, the girl from the cramped city apartment, was the one who actually belonged here. But as she stood in the cold, silent foyer, under the scrutinizing, unwelcoming gaze of her biological parents, she had never felt more like an intruder in her life.

The truth had been found, but a home had been lost. She was still completely, utterly alone, begging for scraps of love from people who viewed her as an inconvenience.

She didn't know it yet, but this pathetic thirst for their affection would be her undoing. She would spend months humbling herself, dynamic, begging for their attention, and letting them walk all over her just to hear them call her their daughter. She would let them destroy her dignity, smash her heart into pieces, and discard her like trash all to protect their beloved, fake daughter Chuyao.

But from the ashes of that total devastation, the fragile dove would die.

The next time she stood in this foyer, it wouldn't be to beg for their love...it would be to orchestrate their absolute ruin.
