The Question of Staying

The question did not arrive from outside.

It came from within the basin.

A proposal surfaced during a routine session on interregional coordination. Not urgent. Not controversial. Almost administrative in tone.

Succession protocol.

Cassian brought it to me with careful neutrality.

"They are not asking you to leave," he said. "They are asking what happens when you do."

Lucien read the draft once, then again more slowly.

"In case of withdrawal or absence of founding presence," he murmured. "Authority continuity measures."

I felt something tighten beneath my ribs.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The basin no longer revolved around crisis. It no longer relied on my decisions. But my presence still carried symbolic gravity.

And gravity, left undefined, becomes liability.

The fifth presence did not speak.

He did not need to.

This was not about systems.

It was about identity.

By midday, the discussion expanded.
