Chapter 30 : Fusion
The fusion interface materialized when I focused my attention on the system's core functions.
I'd accessed status screens and extraction protocols countless times, but this was different—a new layer of complexity that had unlocked with D-rank advancement. The display showed my stored powers as interconnected nodes, lines of compatibility stretching between related abilities.
[FUSION PREPARATION INITIATED] [COMPATIBLE POWER PAIRS DETECTED: 3] [HIGHEST COMPATIBILITY: STRENGTH ENHANCEMENT + PAIN RESISTANCE] [ESTIMATED STABILITY: 72%]
Seventy-two percent. Not perfect odds, but better than gambling on lower-compatibility options. The system offered detailed analysis—power interactions, theoretical output calculations, risk assessments for various combinations.
Strength and pain resistance made intuitive sense. Both were physical enhancements, operating on similar cellular mechanisms. Tank's raw power and Ironhide's durability were natural complements—one provided force, the other prevented the user from being harmed by that force.
Combined, they might create something genuinely formidable.
[PROCEED WITH FUSION?] [WARNING: SOURCE POWERS WILL BE CONSUMED] [WARNING: PROCESS IRREVERSIBLE] [WARNING: FIRST FUSION MAY CAUSE MEMORY FRAGMENT ABSORPTION]
Memory fragments. The warning gave me pause—a reminder that these powers had come from someone else. Tank and Ironhide weren't just ability donors. They were people whose essential selves I'd stripped away for my own benefit.
Does it matter? I asked myself. They were criminals. They hurt people. Whatever memories they left behind can't change what I've already done.
The justification felt hollow, but I proceeded anyway.
"Initiate fusion."
The process began with pressure.
Not physical pressure—something deeper, cellular, as if every atom in my body was being compressed toward a single point. The strength enhancement and pain resistance powers activated simultaneously, their familiar sensations amplified beyond normal parameters.
Then they started merging.
I collapsed onto the apartment floor as the fusion intensified. My muscles spasmed, my nervous system fired in patterns that shouldn't have been possible. The two powers—distinct abilities I'd carried separately for months—began flowing into each other like rivers joining at a confluence.
Memories came with them.
Tank's memories. The first time he'd felt his strength manifest—lifting a car off his injured brother after an accident. The fear. The exhilaration. The moment he'd realized he was something more than human.
Then darker memories. Using that strength to hurt people. The satisfaction of breaking bones. The power trip of watching weaker men cower before him.
Ironhide's memories followed. A childhood of abuse, pain that eventually stopped registering. The accelerator explosion transforming survival mechanism into meta-ability. Years of numbing himself to violence by making violence unable to touch him.
Both sets of memories poured into my consciousness, fragments of lives I'd ended without understanding what I was taking.
[MEMORY ABSORPTION IN PROGRESS] [INTEGRATION: 47%]
The fusion continued despite my distress. Powers intertwining, becoming something new. Tank's force combining with Ironhide's durability, generating a hybrid ability that exceeded either source.
[INTEGRATION: 78%]
The memories faded, settling into a corner of my mind I could access but didn't have to. Background information rather than active experience. The lives of men I'd extracted from, preserved in fragments that might never fully integrate.
[INTEGRATION: 100%] [FUSION COMPLETE]
The pressure released. I lay on the floor, gasping, covered in sweat, every nerve ending singing with unfamiliar sensation.
[NEW POWER CREATED: UNBREAKABLE WARRIOR] [CLASSIFICATION: B-TIER] [DURATION: 10 MINUTES] [COOLDOWN: 2 HOURS] [SIDE EFFECTS: EXTREME HUNGER POST-USE]
B-tier. My first B-tier power, created from the fusion of two C-tier abilities. The system displayed details—enhanced strength beyond what Tank had possessed, combined with durability that surpassed Ironhide's pain resistance.
I pulled myself off the floor and tested the new power.
The activation felt different from either source ability. Warmth spread through my body, accompanied by a subtle shift in density—my muscles becoming harder, my skin gaining resistance it hadn't possessed before. The world seemed slightly slower, my reactions slightly faster.
I punched the wall.
The impact drove through drywall and into the wooden frame behind it, creating a fist-sized hole with minimal effort. My knuckles registered the contact as pressure rather than pain—sensation without damage.
Stronger than before. More durable than before. Combined effects exceeding the sum of their parts.
I found a dumbbell from my home gym setup—fifty pounds of iron I'd used for controlled training. I dropped it on my foot from chest height.
The impact registered as minor discomfort. Nothing broke. Nothing bruised. The weight bounced away, and I stood unaffected.
[UNBREAKABLE WARRIOR: ACTIVE] [DURATION REMAINING: 8:47]
Eight minutes of enhanced capability, followed by two hours of vulnerability. The trade-off was significant—I couldn't maintain this state indefinitely, couldn't rely on it for sustained operations. But for specific moments when maximum force and maximum protection were needed...
The power hummed through my body like a promise.
The hunger hit thirty minutes after deactivation.
Not ordinary hunger—something deeper, more demanding. My body had burned significant energy during the fusion process and subsequent testing. The cellular restructuring required fuel I hadn't provided.
My refrigerator was already depleted from the past week's neglect. I ordered pizza—a large, which I demolished within twenty minutes. Then a second large. Then a third.
Three large pizzas in under an hour. The delivery driver gave me a strange look on the second trip; by the third, he'd stopped asking questions.
[ENERGY DEBT: RESOLVED] [FUSION FEATURE: STABILIZED] [POWER INVENTORY UPDATED]
The system displayed my revised power list. Six abilities remaining after the fusion—Unbreakable Warrior had consumed both strength and pain resistance, leaving phasing, night vision, electrical manipulation, fire projection, and illusion.
But the new power was worth the sacrifice. B-tier capability from C-tier sources. A significant upgrade in combat potential.
And something else.
The memory fragments had settled, but their influence remained. I understood Tank and Ironhide better now—not just their abilities, but their motivations. The reasons they'd become who they were. The circumstances that had shaped their choices.
Does knowing make it better or worse? I wondered. Does understanding why they became monsters change the fact that I took something essential from them?
No answers presented themselves.
I finished the last pizza slice and collapsed on the couch, exhaustion finally catching up with the accumulated stress of the past two weeks. Sleep came quickly—the dreamless unconsciousness of a body pushed beyond its limits.
When I woke, it was afternoon. Sunlight streamed through windows I'd forgotten to cover. My phone displayed three missed calls from numbers I didn't recognize, probably wrong numbers or spam.
Nothing from Caitlin. Not that I expected anything.
[GOOD MORNING] [UNBREAKABLE WARRIOR: AVAILABLE] [DAILY OBJECTIVES: PENDING]
The system's cheerful notification felt almost ironic. But there was something grounding in its predictability—the cold logic that didn't care about heartbreak, didn't judge emotional choices, only tracked progress and suggested optimization.
I had work to do.
STAR Labs still needed a security consultant. The Harvest still had targets to pursue. The timeline still advanced toward events I'd seen played out on a television screen in another life.
Ronnie Raymond would die in the singularity. Unless I changed things. Unless I found a way to save him that didn't compromise everything else.
Would saving him be justice for what Caitlin's decision did to me? Or revenge for what I couldn't have?
The questions didn't have clean answers. Nothing about my situation had clean answers anymore.
I showered, dressed, and prepared to face the world I'd been avoiding for the past two weeks. Eventually, I'd have to return to STAR Labs. Eventually, I'd have to see Caitlin and Ronnie together, watch them rebuild the love that had displaced me.
But not today.
Today, I would train my new power. Master the Unbreakable Warrior. Prepare for whatever came next.
The fusion had given me something Caitlin couldn't take away. Something that would remain mine regardless of who chose whom, who loved whom, who left whom behind.
Power was simpler than love.
I flexed my hand, feeling the potential of what I'd become, and started planning my return to the world.
