I quickly raised one hand in the air, signaling for him to remain seated while I desperately tried to catch my breath. The harsh coughing racked my frame for several long seconds before I finally managed to stabilize my lungs.
I could already feel the sudden rush of blood turning my face unbearably hot and flushed, radiating a deep heat from pure embarrassment.
Why the hell had I reacted so violently to that piece of news?
"Leo?" Kayden asked again, his brow furrowed with genuine concern.
"I am fine," I croaked, my voice rough. I grabbed a linen napkin and wiped my mouth clean, forcing my posture back into some semblance of professional dignity. "The liquid briefly entered my respiratory tract instead of traveling down the esophagus. My body's protective cough reflex simply decided to violently remind me that oxygen is important."
