Following the clues provided by Ekko, Vi found the apartment building in the Academy district. This time, they were planning to pull off something big. It all started because Jayce had been far too extravagant during his trips to Zaun, attracting the "Little Boy's" attention.
The journey went smoothly; no one noticed Vi and the others as they navigated the safest rooftop routes. Vi reached the balcony and peered through the window. Empty. At this hour, students and staff should be in the Academy labs or classrooms.
"No one's here," she whispered.
Mylo stepped forward to pick the lock, but Vi, lacking her usual patience, pulled Powder up from the roof and kicked the door open with a swift, splintering crack.
The room was filled with the aura of civilization: stacks of books, intricate blueprints, and gleaming trinkets. While Mylo began stuffing a nose hair trimmer and small gadgets into his backpack, Powder drifted toward the inner rooms.
The Guardian in the Bedroom
Powder pushed open the bedroom door. It was messier than the lounge, smelling of cold pizza and... paper? She immediately snatched a slice of pizza from a desk, stuffing it into her mouth. Then, she spotted it: a high-class, heavy metal box hidden beneath a pile of blueprints.
Just as she reached for it, a voice nearly sent her into cardiac arrest.
"Hey, eating my pizza is one thing, but don't touch what's in that box. You'll bring a world of bad luck upon yourself."
Kael was sitting in the corner of the bed, not even looking up. His eyes were fixed on an adult magazine—specifically a "cultural study" of Noxian customs. Nice~ Jayce really does hide the good stuff.
"You... who are you?" Powder squeaked, her voice trembling.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" Kael closed the magazine and looked at the blue-haired girl. She looked easy to bully—the type that would cry for an hour if you flicked her forehead.
"Powder! What's taking so long?" Vi's voice barked from the hallway.
"Oh my, a group job then," Kael said, slowly standing up.
Three Against One
Vi burst into the room, followed by Mylo and Claggor.
"Vi, you said the place was empty!" Mylo hissed.
"How was I supposed to know there was a brat in the bedroom?" Vi clenched her fists and stepped forward menacingly. "Hey, kid. Be smart and just lie down on the floor."
"What if I don't?"
"Then I'll beat you down."
Vi lunged. Before she could even finish her sentence, she was flying backward, her body slamming into Mylo and sending them both to the floor.
"Tell me, who is lying on the ground now?" Kael asked, dusting off his pants.
Vi clutched her stomach, face contorted in pain. Claggor raised his fists, looking at Vi for direction. "What do we do? He's tough."
"Tough or not, handle him! Three against one!" Vi roared, charging again with Mylo and Claggor flanking her.
Powder hesitated, picked up a stray slipper to join the fray, but froze. In a blur of movement, all three of her companions were already back on the floor, groaning in a tangled heap of limbs.
"Um... can we call a truce?" Powder forced a fawning smile, dropping the slipper.
"No," Kael said, his face darkening as he walked forward.
The Hostage Situation
Powder tripped over her own feet in terror, landing on her backside. Kael sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at the four intruders.
"Breaking and entering, gang activity, intent to commit violence... heh. You'd better pray Piltover's juvenile protection laws are robust, or you'll be spending your retirement in Stillwater Prison."
"Damn Upper-City scum," Vi spat, propping herself up. She knew the name Stillwater—a place where the food was worse than Zaunite swill.
Kael patted Vi's head. Her hair was prickly and clearly unwashed. "Have your adults come to bail you out."
"You wish!" Vi lunged again, only to be instantly pinned to the mattress by Kael, who used her as a human seat cushion.
"Hey, skinny one," Kael pointed at Mylo. "You're the clever one. Go get your guardian. Tell him to come to this address."
"Mylo, if you tell Vander, you're finished!" Vi shouted.
Just then, the front door opened. Caitlyn rushed in, freezing at the sight of the wreckage and the bound Zaunites.
"Kael?! What happened?"
"Just some petty thieves," Kael explained calmly. "I've sent their friend to fetch their parents."
"Isn't that risky?" Caitlyn whispered. "The people who raise thieves aren't exactly 'Law-Abiding Citizens'."
"Don't worry. We'll meet right here under the eyes of the Enforcer patrols."
Kael ignored Vi's renewed hissing and offered the half-eaten pizza slice to Powder. "Is having a sister like this troublesome?"
"Not at all!" Powder snapped, taking the pizza.
Kael then handed her a carton of milk. Powder took a sip, mesmerized by Kael's aura. "...Okay, maybe a little bit. Sometimes," she whispered.
"Powder!" Vi's eyes widened in betrayal.
"Vi, are you hungry?" Powder asked, holding out the pizza.
"I'm not hungry!!" Vi shouted, followed immediately by a rumble from her stomach that echoed through the room.
