The woman peeled away from the fight first, wings snapping wide, blood dripping from her feathers in long unhurried ribbons as she banked hard toward the treeline where Adrian and his guards had begun their retreat.
"Brother Blood Dragon, don't play too long with your food," she called back over her shoulder, voice honeyed even now. "I'll bring you back a prince to share."
She was gone, a streak of crimson vanishing into the canopy.
Blood Dragon's eyes hadn't left Dax since the moment he'd been sent crashing through the trees. Something in his jaw worked, hunger and restraint warring visibly across his face, wings flexing as if barely held in check.
You will be the first to die, Dax thought, watching the tension ripple through the angel's massive frame. How flattering.
But the child spoke first, hovering, keeping his distance from Dax.
