BEEEEP.

The sound cut through the jungle, making every student pause for a second.

Midnight's voice boomed from every drone in the perimeter.

"THE FIRST TWENTY MINUTES ARE UP!! THE ZONE IS BEGINNING TO SHRINK!"

The drones began to move.

The massive ring of machines that had marked the boundary started closing inward. Slowly, the perimeter shrank.

For students who had been paying attention, who had kept track of time and positioned themselves toward the centre, everything went smoothly.

They watched the boundary contract in the distance and kept moving.

For those who did't? It was pure chaos.

A team of three Business class students had been hiding in a ravine near the eastern edge, too scared to move since the drop. They had spent the entire first twenty minutes arguing about whether it was safer to stay hidden or to look for points.

Unfortunately for them, they lost track of time.

"RUN! RUN! RUN!"

They rushed up the slope, slipping on wet rocks, grabbing at roots, pulling each other up. The boundary was closing fast, and the red lights were getting closer.

Two of them made it over the ridge and into the safe zone. The third tripped on a root. By the time he looked up, a drone was hovering directly above him.

"Eliminated," the drone announced.

A harness cable dropped down and hooked into his vest.

"NO! WAIT! I WAS SO CLOSE-"

But the drone ignored him, as he was lifted into the air.

His two teammates watched him disappear above the canopy.

"...Should we have helped him?"

"We barely made it ourselves."

Elsewhere, a solo General Studies girl had been navigating a river when the beep sounded. She had no idea which direction the safe zone was. She started running upstream, which, sadly, was the wrong direction.

The drones found her standing knee-deep in water, looking around in panic.

"Eliminated."

She didn't even fight it. She just sighed, let the harness clip on, and was lifted away with the most defeated expression anyone had ever seen.

On the western edge, four Support class students had built a makeshift shelter out of branches and leaves. They had been sitting inside it for twenty minutes. Their plan was to hide until the final circle and then team up against Akira for the thousand points.

But they happened to miscalculate the boundaries.

They didn't notice until the drones were directly overhead.

"Eliminated."

"Eliminated."

"Eliminated."

"Eliminated."

Four harnesses connected with the four students. Gone in five seconds.

One of them, being lifted into the air, screamed down at the others: "I TOLD YOU WE SHOULD HAVE MOVED!!"

"YOU SAID NOTHING, SMARTASS! YOU WERE ASLEEP!!"

Near the northern boundary, a General Studies boy was sprinting. He could see the drone line ahead of him, closing in. The safe zone was right there. Twenty metres. Fifteen. Ten. Five.

He dove.

He hit the dirt and rolled, crossing the boundary line with half a second to spare.

He lay on his back, staring at the sky, chest heaving.

"I'm alive," he gasped. "I'm alive."

When the shrinking was complete, Midnight's voice echoed across the battlefield.

"YOU BETTER KEEP TRACK OF TIME, KIDS!!"

The remaining students shivered.

Above the stadium, the main screen updated.

STUDENTS REMAINING: 183

Midnight's voice boomed once more.

"LET'S CONTINUE!!!!!"

And the battle royale raged on.

Somewhere in the south.

Ojiro moved through the jungle canopy. He was above the ground, leaping from branch to branch, thanks to his quirk. His tail served as both a counterweight and a third limb, wrapping around branches to swing him forward, propelling him through the trees with fluid momentum.

He had decided early on to stay off the ground. The jungle floor was where the teams would be. Up here, he had visibility, speed, and the element of surprise.

He had already taken out two solo students in the first twenty minutes.

Currently was heading south, looking for more targets, when his instincts screamed at him.

Something wasn't right.

The branch he was about to land on had a thin line across it. Almost invisible.

He saw it a bit too late.

His foot touched the branch, and the wire snapped.

CRACK.

A massive log swung out from behind the trees.

Ojiro twisted mid-air. His tail whipped behind him and caught a branch above, yanking his body upward. The log passed beneath him, missing his ribs by a centimeter.

He swung up and landed on a higher branch, while his heart hammered.

"The hell is this?" he muttered, scanning the area below.

He couldn't see anyone. No movement or sound. Just the jungle.

He dropped down carefully, landing on what looked like solid ground.

Alas, it wasn't. The soil crumbled.

His feet punched through a thin layer of leaves and sticks covering a deep pit.

He hit the bottom.

And the bottom hit back.

The moment he landed, something weird filled the pit. A slimy, translucent substance that looked like some living gel rushed towards him and locked him down in the pit.

His tail was pinned against the wall, and his hands were stuck at his sides.

"What the fuck?!"

He thrashed, tried to break through, and use his tail, but the slime was strong. The more he struggled, the tighter it gripped.

Ojiro looked up.

Five faces looked down at him from the edge of the pit.

They all wore glasses.

The one in the front was short and round, with thick-rimmed glasses and a grin that stretched from ear to ear. He looked like the kind of kid who got straight A's and reminded the teacher about homework.

He was likely their leader.

"No matter how strong you are," the short one said, pushing his glasses up with one finger, "maths is never wrong. Hahahahahaha!"

Behind him, a girl with long, gooey-textured hair, the same as the slime in the pit, crossed her arms and looked down at Ojiro with a smug expression.

"True," she said. "And this is the standard of the hero course? Falling for a pit trap?"

The team laughed at Ojiro. The short leader. The slime-haired girl. Two tall brothers who looked identical except for their heights. And a bulky kid at the back who was already pulling out supplies for the next trap.

Ojiro's face went red with shame.

He was in Class 1-A; he was supposed to be the best out of the best.

But here he was stuck in a hole, covered in slime, caught by a team of Business class students who hadn't thrown a single punch.

He opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out.

Because what could he say? They had outplayed him. Plain and simple as that.

He had trained every day since he was eight years old. He had mastered his tail to the point where it could crack concrete.

The worst part wasn't the loss. The worst part was knowing that his classmates would know about this. Along with everyone in the stadium, would watch Mashirao Ojiro, the martial artist of Class 1-A, get pulled out of a pit like a cat stuck in a well.

Soon enough, a drone descended into the pit.

"Eliminated."

The slime girl pressed her hands together. The substance restraining Ojiro suddenly liquified, sliding off his body and flowing upward like a living thing. It climbed the pit walls, reached the surface, and merged with the girl's hair, making it longer and thicker.

The harness cable attached to Ojiro's vest, and pulled him into the air.

In the stadium, the crowd had mixed reactions.

Some were laughing. "A hero student got caught in a PIT TRAP!!"

Some were impressed. "Those Business kids are no joke."

Present Mic called it out. "OJIRO FROM CLASS 1-A HAS BEEN ELIMINATED!! TAKEN OUT BY A BUSINESS CLASS TEAM USING TRAPS AND TERRAIN!! THE NON-HERO STUDENTS ARE PROVING THEY BELONG HERE, FOLKS!!"

Aizawa, as usual, had a different perspective. "He got overconfident moving through the canopy. He assumed the threats were on the ground. The trap was designed to exploit that. This was a smart and well-thought-out plan."

Back in the jungle, the team celebrated.

The short leader pumped his fist. "That's the second hero course student we've got! Twenty points total! We are the best!!"

The slime girl flipped her hair proudly. "Naturally."

One of the tall brothers nodded. "True."

The other tall brother also nodded. "Agreed."

The bulky kid at the back was already crouching, shovelling dirt. "Should we set up the traps again?"

The short leader pushed his glasses up and grinned. "Obviously. Same process. Same location. Heroes are predictable — they all take the high ground and move through the canopy. This path is a natural route toward the centre. More should come."

The team got back to work. The bulky kid re-dug the pit while the tall brothers gathered logs and vines for the pendulum trap. The slime girl secreted fresh gel into the bottom of the pit, layering it thick. The short leader supervised, checking sight lines, adjusting the wire trigger, covering the pit with fresh leaves and branches.

In five minutes, the clearing looked untouched again.

They hid in the bushes. Five pairs of glasses glinted in the shadows as they waited.

Luckly, they didn't have to wait long.

A figure appeared from the north, moving fast.

He had wild blonde hair that spiked like an explosion.

The short leader's eyes went shined behind his glasses.

"Target spotted," the leader whispered, a smile creeping across his face. "Same plan. Let the trap do the work."

All of them nodded, waiting for the rat to take the bait.

All five of them watched the blonde boy approach.

Having no idea that the blonde was the crazy idiot with anger issues, AKA Bakugo.
