No woman forgot a man who looked at her the way the man in that picture did. Ruby slowly reached toward the photo with trembling fingers. Her head pounded violently again as she stared at the smiling version of herself trapped inside the tiny frame.
Fragments of emotions hit her suddenly. Warm hands. Laughter. Safety. Love. Then pain. So much pain. Ruby grabbed the edge of the counter for balance.
"Who…" she whispered shakily, staring at the photo. "Who is he?" The jeweler carefully closed the locket again before placing it gently on the counter.
"The ring…" he said slowly, picking it back up, "I can buy." Ruby immediately looked relieved.
"But the locket?" He shook his head. "No." Ruby's expression fell again. "Why?" The man adjusted his glasses before answering.
