Chapter 17 - Counsel of the Heart

The morning was quieter for Lila. For once, the office wasn't buzzing about her. The gossip had shifted elsewhere—towards a new contract deal, a merger rumor, and the usual corporate politics. She welcomed the reprieve, though the silence between her and Luca still weighed heavily on her mind.

At her desk, she tried to focus on work, but Kevin's card sat in her drawer like a secret waiting to be revealed. She thought about Pearl's excitement, Amara's caution, and her own conflicted heart. For now, she pushed it aside.

Across town, Luca wasn't at ease. The words of James and Yuki still echoed in his mind, but he knew he needed a different perspective—someone older, someone who had lived through the chaos of romance and come out the other side.

So he drove to his cousin Alessio's house. Alessio had once been notorious for his playboy lifestyle, but now he was married, settled, and surprisingly wise. His wife, Clara, was home too, and Luca knew she would add her own sharp insights.

Alessio greeted him with a grin. "Well, well. Luca, the serious one, showing up unannounced. This must be important."

Clara appeared from the kitchen, wiping her hands. "If he's here looking like that, it's about a woman."

Luca sighed, sitting down heavily. "It's… complicated."

Alessio leaned back, smirking. "Complicated is just another word for interesting. Tell me."

Luca hesitated, then spoke. "There's someone. Lila. She's… different. I've dated before, but it was never like this. With her, it feels… real. And that scares me."

Alessio chuckled. "Ah, the mighty Luca, afraid of feelings. You've had your share of women, but you never let them in. Now one comes along who breaks through your walls, and you don't know what to do."

Clara sat beside Alessio, her tone softer but firm. "That's because this isn't about control, Luca. It's about vulnerability. You can't treat love like a business deal. You can't calculate risk and reward. You have to feel it."

Luca rubbed his temples. "But she's free to do what she wants. There's Kevin now. He's successful, powerful. Maybe he's better for her. Maybe I should just let it go."

Alessio leaned forward, his voice sharp. "Better for her? That's not your decision to make. Do you want her? That's the only question. If you do, then fight for her. Don't hand her over to someone else because you're afraid."

Clara added, "And don't underestimate what she feels. Women know when a man is holding back. If you keep silent, she'll think you don't care. And then she'll move on, even if she wanted you."

Luca's silence stretched, heavy. "I don't know if I can give her what she deserves."

Alessio shook his head. "You're overthinking. What she deserves is honesty. Not perfection, not power—honesty. Tell her how you feel. That's more than Kevin can give her."

Clara smiled gently. "You've built walls around your heart, Luca. But she's already inside. Stop pretending she isn't."

The conversation lingered with Luca long after he left. Alessio's bluntness, Clara's wisdom—they had cut through his excuses. For the first time, he admitted to himself that he cared, deeply, more than he had ever cared for anyone before.

But admitting it to himself was only the first step. The harder part was telling Lila.

Meanwhile, Lila sat in her apartment, staring at Kevin's card again. The office hadn't been about her today, but her mind was still restless. She thought about Luca's silence, about Kevin's invitation, about the choices pressing against her heart.

She whispered to herself, "What do I really want?"

The empire was steady on the surface, but beneath it, hearts were shifting. Luca had taken his first step toward honesty. Lila was standing at the edge of a decision. And the truth was pressing harder than ever, waiting to break free.

The next day, Lila finally made her decision. She called Kevin and agreed to dinner. It felt like the right step—if only to silence the whispers and prove to herself that she wasn't waiting on Luca's silence.

Word traveled fast. Nia, ever the social butterfly, mentioned it casually to Yuki. And Yuki, unable to keep it to himself, told Luca.

"She's going out with Kevin tonight," Yuki said, his tone careful. "Nia told me. It's happening here's the restaurant name."

Yuki handed him the name of the restaurant and Luca took it and saw the name.

Luca's chest tightened. He had tried to bury his feelings, but hearing it aloud was different, just by holding the paper. He couldn't sit still. He grabbed his keys, slid into his sleek black Maserati, and drove through the city streets, the hum of the engine matching the storm inside him.

---

The restaurant was one of the city's finest—crystal chandeliers glowing through tall windows, valet attendants in crisp uniforms, couples stepping out of luxury cars. Luca slowed as he approached, his eyes scanning the entrance.

And then he saw her.

Lila was walking out, alone. The sight stopped him cold. She was radiant in a dark blue backless gown that shimmered under the streetlights, her hair cascading in soft waves. She looked like a vision, but her smile was faint, almost wistful.

He pulled over, stepped out, and called her name. "Lila."

She turned, surprised. "Luca? What are you doing here?"

He walked closer, his voice low but urgent. "I heard you were here with Kevin. Why are you leaving so soon?"

Her lips curved into a smile, soft and teasing. "Because he doesn't have an amazing story about his internship in college."

Luca blinked, confused. "What do you mean?"

She laughed gently, her eyes sparkling. "You told me once about your crazy, funny internship stories—the night you nearly got fired because you stayed up fixing a project no one believed in, the time you accidentally spilled coffee on your supervisor and still managed to win him over. Kevin had nothing like that. No spark, no story. And I realized… I'd rather listen to you tell me those stories a hundred times than sit through another dinner with him."

The words hit him like a wave. She had left because of him.

---

Her gaze held his, steady and unflinching. "So..., why are you here, Luca?"

He exhaled, the weight of silence finally breaking. "Because I couldn't stay away. Because I care about you, more than I've ever cared about anyone. I've dated before, but it was never like this. With you, it feels… real. And that terrifies me. But I don't want to lose you."

Her breath caught, her heart racing.

He stepped closer. "I don't have all the answers. There's something I'm not ready to tell you yet. But what I can tell you is this—I want you. I want us. Will you give me that chance?"

Her smile widened, her eyes glistening. "Yes."

The word was soft, but it carried the weight of everything unsaid.

He leaned in, and their lips met in a kiss that was tender, lingering, filled with the promise of something new.

---

"Come on," Luca said, his voice warm. "Let me take you to dinner. A real one."

She laughed, slipping her hand into his. "Lead the way."

They drove to another restaurant, quieter, more intimate. Candlelight flickered across their table as they shared stories, laughter, and glances that spoke louder than words.

Later, he drove her home. At her door, he leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead. She blinked, surprised—she had expected his lips. But the gesture was so tender, so protective, that her heart melted anyway.

"Goodnight, Lila," he whispered.

She smiled, stepping inside, still flushed with happiness.

---

Luca waited until she was safely inside before driving off. When he reached his home, his phone buzzed. It was her.

"I just wanted to say… thank you," she said softly.

They talked for hours—about work, about life, about the anime he loved. To his surprise, she loved anime too. From anime, they drifted into games, then into dreams and fears, their voices weaving intimacy across the line.

At one point, he chuckled. "I'm just taking off my clothes now. Getting ready for bed."

Her laugh was shy, her cheeks burning. "You didn't have to tell me that."

"I wanted to," he teased.

The conversation grew softer, more romantic, until finally she whispered, "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, princess," he replied.

She blushed, biting her lip as she hung up, her heart racing.

---

The empire was steady on the surface, but beneath it, love had finally broken through. And for the first time, both Lila and Luca knew—they were no longer standing on opposite sides of silence.
