The city lights blurred past the car window, streaks of gold and white cutting through the darkness like fleeting illusions.
Sonia sat stiffly in the backseat, her gaze glued at the road ahead, her fingers clenched tightly around her phone.
Her knuckles had gone pale, the pressure betraying the storm raging inside her chest.
Her heart pounded hard, each beat echoing loud in her ears, that it seemed to jump out of her ribcage any moment.
Through the rearview mirror, the driver occasionally glanced at her. "Madam, are you okay?" he asked cautiously, afraid of being called nosey.
Sonia blinked, her thoughts pulled back from wherever it had left moments ago. "Yes… I'm fine," she replied softly lowering her gaze.
But even she could hear how unconvincing it sounded…too hollow.
The driver returned his gaze to the road with a shrug of his shoulders.
