The room was silent, except for the sound of their heavy, synchronized breathing. The air was still thick with the scent of their combined sweat and the musk of their mating. Damien reached out, his hand trembling slightly as he tried to pull Sofia's damp body back against his chest, wanting to hold her.
But the moment his skin brushed hers, Sofia flinched. She rolled away from him, clutching the tangled sheets to her chest to cover her bare skin. The warmth that had just consumed the room vanished, replaced by a wall of ice.
"Don't," she whispered, her tone cold.
Damien froze, his arm hanging in the empty space where she had been a second ago. "Sofia? What's wrong? I thought…"
"You thought what?" Sofia snapped, finally looking at him. Her eyes were no longer full of desire; they were tired and filled with a sharp, lingering pain. "That one night would fix everything? That because you claimed my body, I'd just forget that you once hurt and broke me?"
