By the time Arianne got the twins into bed, her jaw ached from clenching it all evening.
Lily fought sleep first, going through her whole routine of complaints and questions. Why does the moon follow the car. One whispered conversation with Leo that ended with him typing something on his tablet and Lily refusing to show what it was. Then Lily's eyes just closed mid-sentence like someone had flipped a switch.
Leo went easier. His tablet slipped from his hands while he was still reading it, and his breathing changed before he did.
Arianne stayed on the edge of the bed longer than she needed to. One hand on the blanket between them, not touching either of them, just close enough to feel their chests rise and fall. She watched their faces go slack. Watched Leo's fingers twitch once like he was still typing in his sleep.
