Chapter 118 - Book Two: Chapter Eighteen

Bronn and Drena's group slipped out at midnight, into the trees, and headed northwest. Their group was made up of a lot of archers and foresters, so they slipped through the trees easily. After a few hours, they encountered some Zonian guards, but quickly and quietly dispatched them. By dawn, they were just outside the enemy camp.

The Zonians were encamped around the balloon buildings, with 180 of them holding the place. They had several mages among their number, and Bronn had told his people to target them the most. His archers spread out, taking lots of angles on the camp. At one point, several of the enemy mages were gathered around the cookfire getting breakfast in the open, and Drena ordered the attack. Arrows sprouted from the chests of 4 of the 5 mages, and the enemy camp burst into activity. The archers let them come to them, feathering as many as they could before they retreated. 30 Zonians were dead before actual melee fighting began. The Westerosi were outnumbered but were hand-picked crack troops, so they didn't flinch as the enemy came on.

An explosion in a group of Westerosi archers set fire to many of them. Several died from the Zonian mages' attack. "Get that mage someone", came Bronn's shout. Two Weaterosi men-at-arms jumped into the mage's area and began to carve her up. As she went down, another wave of Zonians attacked. 40 Westerosi fighters were being hard-pressed by the second wave of Zonian's. Then a giant Zonian captain waded into the fight. He was bare-chested and wielded two axes, and he had one eye closed by a vicious scar. He roared as he entered the fray, and the Zonians took heart. Three men-at-arms went down to his axes, and then Bronn and Drena attacked him together. The Westerosi archers swung around both ways to catch enemies in a crossfire, but they had to be careful not to kill their own. The battle was nip and tuck with no real advantage on either side when the Zonian captain caught Bronn by surprise with a back swing. His swing connected with Bronn's off-hand shoulder, and everyone could hear it snap. Bronn crumpled to the ground with a gasp, and the Zonian captain roared with glee. Only his roar was short-lived as Drena drove her sword through his back and left it sticking out of his front side. She twisted the sword and jerked it free.

A gout of blood fountained from the confused Zonian as he collapsed to the ground. That broke the Zonian's spirit, and a dozen of them started running to get away. The archers cut them down before they could make it to the trees. "Don't let any make it back to their fort to warn them", Drena shouted. Just then, a sharp-eyed archer spotted a strange gull coming into the area and shot it out of the sky. "Another dead mage, I'll wager," he laughed. The Zonians broke and were slain to a man. 30 Westerosi troops were dead or badly wounded when the fighting was done. The healer they had brought with them did what she could, but these badly wounded troops would need real care, and Bronn's shoulder was far beyond regular healing. She ordered stretchers made for the worst-wounded and had 10 men carry them back to Deepwoods Motte. That just left 40 of them to hold the fort until the reinforcements she had ordered arrived. They searched the camp for intel and sent what they found with the wounded.

In the Zonian encampment, another mage who could inhabit the body of a bird died. Jun Wei ordered his last three mages out of their bird body inhabits before they were killed as well. He would have to be careful not to lose them. The fact that the mage had died while checking on the Sea Dragon Point encampment gave him the feeling that they had lost that intel gathering point. His ships would have to be careful if another balloon went up, and he would have to try to retake that point for the upcoming battles. These Westerosi were madiningly effecient at defending their lands. He desperately needed to take the city they were focused on; it couldn't come too soon.

The Tower of Westeros was the first to report that the smoke was clearing from both north and south of the Zonian positions at sea. Either the sling ships had run out of smoke devices, or they were up to something. When the smoke was gone later in the day, the report came in that there were 4 lines of ships, two facing north and two facing south, in long lines with a large space between them. Further out to sea, several large ships seemed to be fishing.

Tyrion snarled in the intel office, "They are trying to feed 80,000 men by fishing. We need to put a stop to that, convene a meeting!" When all of the heads of departments and leaders were at the table, he said, "We need to mount an offensive against these fishing ships. Everything we've got needs to go against them, and we need to sink as few of them as possible. Capture every one we can." Arya looked at him quizzically but nodded her understanding. Tyrion got in touch with Btan, and the two of them put an assault into action.
