The morning air was crisp as Jane led Levi down the busy streets, their hands brushing occasionally as they walked. Levi stayed slightly behind, careful not to draw attention, her bound wings hidden and her aura restrained.
"You don't have to follow me," Jane said, glancing over her shoulder.
"I want to," Levi replied softly. "It feels… right, seeing you this way."
Jane smiled, adjusting her bag. "You really like watching me boss teenagers around, huh?"
"I like seeing the part of you no one else gets to see," Levi said, her golden eyes softening.
At the academy, Jane led Levi to her classroom. Levi stayed quietly at the back, her presence calm but impossible to ignore. The students had already met her before, but their curiosity hadn't faded.
As Jane taught, a few hands went up.
"Miss Elion," one student asked, " Is she really a mage? Because last time you said she wasn't and I think your faking it"
Levi's golden eyes softened. "I've studied magic in the past, yes," she said, keeping her tone gentle. "Mostly for self-defense and knowledge, not for competition."
Another student leaned forward. "Her aura… it feels… old. Does she have experience in… like… battles?"
Jane gave Levi a quick, apologetic glance. Levi shook her head slightly. "Yes. I've been through challenges you couldn't imagine, but I'm here today to learn and observe, not fight."
A third student whispered to a friend: "She's so calm… and powerful. How can someone be that calm after all that power?"
Levi's lips curved faintly. "Control is learned. Fear doesn't make you strong—restraint does."
The students scribbled notes furiously, clearly impressed. Jane continued her lesson, explaining spell mechanics and tech applications, but every now and then she glanced at Levi, who gave subtle nods of encouragement.
When class ended, the students lingered, whispering and asking more questions.
"Miss Elion," one brave student asked, "do you think she's… like a retired warrior or something?"
Levi smiled faintly. "Something like that. But I'm just here to support your learning. And to see Jane teach—she's the real hero in this room."
Jane's face flushed as the students laughed softly, clearly enchanted by Levi's calm authority. Levi reached for Jane's hand under the desk, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"You did well," Levi whispered.
Jane smiled back, squeezing her hand. "You didn't have to answer all their questions."
"I wanted to," Levi replied. "They deserve the truth they can handle. Curiosity isn't a bad thing."
Later, walking home, Levi stayed close to Jane, her head resting lightly on Jane's shoulder. The city hummed around them, ordinary and peaceful. Even with her past still lurking in the shadows, Levi felt a rare comfort: she was with Jane, among humans and witches who didn't fear her, and for the first time in centuries, she could simply exist.
"Do you ever worry about being seen?" Jane asked quietly.
Levi shook her head, golden eyes softening. "I'm cautious, but here… with you, it doesn't feel dangerous. Only… right."
Jane smiled and squeezed her hand again. "Then let's enjoy this moment. Just us."
Levi let herself relax, feeling her demon instincts settle beneath the surface, content to follow the witch she loved and protect the life they were building together.
