So when Chloe slid into the seat across from April at their usual lunch table on Thursday with her leather notebook, two highlighters, and the expression of a woman who had not slept enough but was too energized by information to care, April set down her coffee and gave her full attention.


"Tell me you didn't follow him," April said.


"I observed him. From a distance. With purpose." Chloe opened her notebook to a page that was already half full of her small, precise handwriting. "There is a meaningful difference and I need you to respect it."
