Chapter 35: The Last Ordinary Day

Thursday arrived the way the last ordinary day before something significant always arrives — quietly, without ceremony, wearing the same clothes as every other day but carrying a different weight underneath them.

April woke up at 7 AM and lay still for a moment doing the thing she had stopped doing weeks ago — counting. Not days remaining until disaster. Days remaining until Saturday. Two. Today and tomorrow and then the Crimson Circuit, and whatever came after it.

She got up, made coffee, and stood at the window of the apartment looking out at the Old District waking up below her. The street vendors setting up. The delivery trucks. The woman with the very small dog who walked past the Seven-Star every morning at exactly 7:15. The PC cafe across the street dark and locked at this hour, the violet LED strips still faintly visible through the window even with everything shut down.
