Chapter 94 - Chapter 91

17-9 current score

Barely some 5 minutes had passed since the game had given start and the scoreboard already showed the clear difference in level that there was between both teams.

With an advantage of 8 points in the initial minutes of the match, the Wildcats team showed a clear advantage in comparison with the Northern Kentucky team, who had barely managed 9 points in what went of the match.

The majority of these had been thanks to the great ability of Todd Johnson, the power forward of the Northern team, who thanks to his corpulence managed to penetrate to the hoop and got 2 crucial baskets that kept his team afloat.

Of course, those baskets were achieved thanks to the collective work of the team and to the fact that Jalen had taken charge of marking Aaron personally in the paint, impeding him from moving with ease and limiting his defensive capacity.

Despite them, the team also counted on a second defender like Julius on the court, who took charge of defending Todd at the moment in which he attempted to penetrate to the hoop.

He did not manage to stop all his advances, but until now Julius added 5 points and 2 rebounds in the match, being one of the most prominent players of the match until now.

Nonetheless, he was still a step behind Aaron, who was adding 8 points with 1 rebound and one block, being the most prominent player in what goes of the game.

In this opportunity, the NKU team was in possession of the ball with Cole Murray, the point guard of the team, in the middle of the court while he had Aaron Harrison in front of him closing his path head-on, while his teammates also found themselves searching for any opening in the defense of the team.

Without many options, Cole began to dribble the ball between his legs while he advanced slowly with Aaron Harrison close to him before any possible movement that he was going to make at that moment.

Then he leaned his body toward the left, seeking to penetrate through the right side of Aaron, who was also attentive to that, only to then see how he gathered the ball and changed direction abruptly, passing by his contrary side facing the hoop.

"Watch out!!" Aaron alerted while immediately he turned and disposed himself to take his new defensive position, while the Wildcats team again took defensive positions around the perimeter, seeking to cut off the passing routes to Cole.

Without many options, Cole attempted a long-distance shot from the right side of the perimeter, seeking to get 3 points and reduce the disadvantage that his team had at that moment.

But perhaps it was the distance, but the ball ended up deflecting slightly, ending up rebounding against the rim before it came out of there and ended up causing chaos in the paint of the Wildcats team.

Jalen, at the moment in which he saw that the ball rebounded, prepared himself to fight for the rebound and slam the ball against the hoop for a putback and add 2 points to the encounter, but before he could even take a few steps toward the direction toward where the ball was going to fall, a person got ahead of him.

Aaron, predicting the direction of the ball with anticipation, took advantage of the brief oversight of Jalen to be able to unmark himself from him and head straight to the exact point to which the ball was heading.

Feeling how Jalen approximated the same point as him, immediately he jumped while he raised his elbows, protecting thus the possession of the ball and making himself with the rebound of this very one and begin with the counterattack.

"Counterattack!!" shouted Aaron while he passed the ball toward James Young and the Wildcats players began with a new counterattack, while the NKU players began to run bound toward the defense.

Going up until placing himself in the paint, Aaron again struggled with Jalen, who stuck to him as soon as he entered straight toward the paint, sticking to him to avoid Aaron from continuing scoring and facing the hoop of his team.

Seeing how Aaron was marked by Jalen, James passed him the ball toward Andrew, seeking for the point guard of the team to distribute the play.

With calm, Andrew gave bounces at the top while his head did not stop looking around the court, searching for the best option for the team, while NKU placed itself in a man-to-man defense, defending each one a player of the Wildcats team.

In an abrupt manner, Andrew accelerates, taking Tyler unprepared, who was the one in charge of the perimeter marking, and turned disposed to take the ball away from his hands, but Andrew, preventing that, rapidly changed the ball of hand to then recompose himself and jump to perform a jump shot.

But at the moment of launching the shot, this also was seen deflected, since his center of gravity found itself unbalanced due to the acceleration and braking that Andrew did to rid himself of the player he had in front of him.

Aaron, upon seeing that, immediately predicted the direction toward where the ball was heading and jumped, catching it in the air under the attentive gaze of all the players on the court, who could only see how Aaron caught the ball with both hands to then slam the ball against the hoop while his body kept falling to the ground.

What the players on the court saw, just like the rest of spectators who found themselves watching the game both in the arena and on the screens, was the incredible alley-oop that Aaron had just performed.

"Oh yeah," shouted Julius, approaching Aaron and passing his arm around his neck while he celebrated just like the rest of his teammates, who also were euphoric upon seeing that last play performed by Aaron.

With that basket by Aaron, the Wildcats team put themselves up over the Norse team by 10 points, an advantage which only put even more pressure on the part of the other side of the team.

Al seeing how 11 minutes had passed and that only 9 minutes remained before the time reached its end, the head coach of the NKU team, Dave Bezold, had no more option than to ask for the first timeout of the match, approaching the referees' table to inform.

With the indications of the referee, the players on the court immediately approached the sides of their benches rapidly, taking advantage of the timeout to rest a bit and recharge batteries before they had to return to the court.

Coach Calipari took advantage of the timeout so that his players rested and hydrated to return to the court, knowing that the situation on the court was optimal and that there was still no necessity to make adjustments or to make changes of players on the hardwood.

In the contrary case, the bench of the visiting team, in which the NKU team found itself, the situation was tense while Coach Bezold gathered his players rapidly in a circle with his clipboard in the center, knowing that the time they had was short and he must find a rapid solution to the problem.

"All right guys, we don't have much time, so pay attention because I will only explain it once," Dave began to say without even raising his sight, expecting that all the players paid attention to what he was explaining on the whiteboard.

"We cannot continue like this, therefore we have to make a double marking on Reed to avoid him being able to continue basketting points through the paint," he explained while he traced some lines on his clipboard and raised his head slightly.

His gaze then focused on Jalen, who had a bad feeling upon feeling that look on the part of the coach, and more upon hearing the following words that he told in his direction.

"Jalen, you are out; Jake, you will enter for him in his place. You and Todd will make a double marking on him in the paint, and if he is on the perimeter you take charge, but I want you by all means to avoid him from continuing scoring, do you understand me?" the coach asked in the direction toward Jake, who nodded, comprehending the instructions while he proceeded to remove his sports jacket to enter the court.

With the whistle of the referee, both teams returned to the court with the ball in possession of the Wildcats for a sideline inbound which was taken by James, so that for once the game resumed with both teams returning to action.

"And it seems that in the timeout, Coach Bezold made some changes in his quintet," said the voice of Tom Hart through the thousands of televisions that at that moment were transmitting live the match that was being lived.

"So it seems, Jon. The center Jalen Billups came out after playing only 11 minutes of game, which in itself is something understandable upon seeing his statistics in those minutes," explained the analyst Jon Sundvold, while in the lower part of the screen Jalen's statistics were shown.

"With 1 point, 1 rebound, and a shooting percentage of 1/3, clearly it is not his night, but considering that he faces one of the greatest prodigies of basketball, obviously his situation is complicated," Tom Hart continued with his explanation, while the game kept developing on the court.

"The measure that Coach Bezold took was clearly to substitute Jalen and change him for the forward Jake Geisler, a second-year player who little by little has begun to add more minutes in this season," Jon continued, while a breakdown of Jake's statistics from last season appeared on the screen.

While both took charge of having their debate and making their comments for all the viewers, the situation on the court kept being at the command of the Wildcats, but the NKU team managed to basket some points too, opting to attack the perimeter.

"Swish" was the sound that was heard from the ball at the moment in which it went through the hoop of the Wildcats team.

25-15 was the current score.

The situation still favored the Wildcats, but even so, Jake Geisler had managed 2/2 in 3-point shots, adding 6 points to the NKU team, avoiding thus the advantage of the Wildcats from increasing in the slightest.

"Their defense became heavier in the center," was the thought that arose in Aaron's mind after several plays in which each time he entered the center, he was flanked by two players, making it difficult thus for him to be able to turn and score.

"If it's like that, then let's change strategy," murmured Aaron while he prepared himself for a sideline inbound after the ball ended up out and the time stopped briefly.

Raising his hand, Aaron raised 2 fingers, giving a sign to the rest of the team, who upon seeing the sign immediately nodded, knowing what was the plan that Aaron had in mind.

Passing the ball to Julius, the latter rapidly returned it to Aaron, who slowly began to approach in direction toward the half of the rival, giving slow bounces to the ball, making the pace of the game decelerate in the process.

With calm, while he passed the ball from one hand to the other, Aaron entered into the paint zone, being immediately flanked by the two players who had the task of marking him, but to be able to protect the ball, Aaron protected it behind his back while he made the fake that he was going to launch, since he had taken a great step backward and put himself in position to perform a step-back.

Taking precautions, Jake jumped while he attempted to block the angle of shot as much as possible, expecting thus to be able to interfere with Aaron's shot.

But contrary to what he and the majority of people thought, as soon as Aaron achieved maximum height with his jump, he passed the ball toward the player who came running at his side, who was Aaron Harrison, who received the ball and, taking advantage of the fact that Aaron had removed from on top of him the two players in charge of protecting the paint, could penetrate the hoop with calm, finishing by dunking the ball against the rim, causing the backboard to begin to shake.

"And there you have it, it doesn't matter if you put a double marking on Reed, he even so finds the way to contribute to the team to keep scoring," Tom said, while the replay of the play repeated again in slow motion across all the screens.

"And not only that, but also that he now passed to a more assisting role, taking advantage of the double marking that NKU makes on him to thus attract the players and leave the back part of the paint completely free for penetration like the one we have just seen," Jon complemented.
