The heavy thud of the iron door against the stone wall was still echoing through the narrow confines of the cell when Lucian crossed the threshold.
He entered first, his massive frame soaking up what little light filtered in from the corridor, casting a long shadow that seemed to swallow the prisoner whole.
Following him with a measured grace was Isabella, with Clara bringing up the rear like a silent wraith. Outside, Aleric and Marcus remained in the hallway, the former leaning against the wall with his head down, unable to bear the weight of the moment.
In the center of the room, Leo was naked and bolted to a chair, his body a map of the previous night's brutality.
He looked up, squinting through the grime and blood, his breath hitching as his eyes landed on the Sovereign.
But the moment his gaze shifted to the woman at Lucian's side, the defiance drained out of him, replaced by a confused, bone-deep horror.
