BOOK TWO: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE GATE
Chapter 19: The Voice Beyond the Stars
The words echoed across every world.
"Welcome home..."
Thousands of voices spoke as one.
Not loud.
Not angry.
Calm.
Ancient.
As though the universe itself had been waiting for Riva.
The enormous being drifted silently above the Silent Observatory. Countless glowing eyes opened across its endless body, each staring directly at her.
No one moved.
No one even dared to breathe.
---
Riva's Star Mark began burning.
Silver light spread across her arm, climbing toward her shoulder.
She fell to one knee.
Pain exploded through her body.
Fragments of memories—not her own—filled her mind.
A little girl laughing inside a palace.
A silver throne beneath a tree made of stars.
A woman placing a crown upon someone's head.
A voice whispering...
"When the Princess returns... the worlds will choose again."
The vision disappeared.
Riva gasped for air.
Eva immediately knelt beside her.
"What did you see?"
Riva shook her head.
"I... don't know."
"They feel like memories..."
"But they aren't mine."
Queen Riva watched silently.
"They are now."
---
Above them, the Devourer continued to drift through the sky.
It made no attempt to attack.
Instead...
It simply watched.
Almost as if it were waiting for someone else to make the first move.
---
Lucien slowly raised his sword.
"We can't just stand here."
Caelum immediately stopped him.
"No."
"If you attack now..."
"You'll lose."
Lucien frowned.
"You've fought it before?"
Caelum answered quietly.
"No one has."
---
The Crown Collector stepped forward.
For the first time, there was no arrogance in his voice.
Only fear.
"I've served for centuries..."
"I've watched kingdoms rise and disappear..."
"But even I have never stood before its true form."
Cassian looked at him.
"Then why help it?"
The Crown Collector lowered his head.
"I never served the Devourer."
"I served..."
"...someone trying to stop it."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Eva whispered.
---
Before the Crown Collector could explain—
The Silent Observatory shook violently.
One of the floating gears surrounding the tower snapped in half.
A massive section of the bridge collapsed into the clouds.
Alaric looked upward in horror.
"The Observatory is falling."
---
The giant clock struck again.
DONG!
This time...
Instead of echoing through the tower...
The sound echoed through the stars.
One by one...
Seven distant lights appeared in the sky.
Each light became another floating island.
Ancient.
Forgotten.
Connected to the Observatory by bridges of silver light.
Parna stared upward.
"There are more Observatories?"
Alaric nodded slowly.
"No..."
"They're the Seven Sanctuaries."
"The places created by the First Kingdom before its fall."
---
Eva's crystal sphere suddenly projected a map across the floor.
The Seven Sanctuaries began glowing.
One by one.
Until only one remained dark.
The final sanctuary.
Its name slowly appeared.
The Throne of Dawn.
Queen Riva closed her eyes.
"So it still exists..."
Lucien looked at her.
"What is the Throne of Dawn?"
She answered carefully.
"It isn't a throne."
"It's where the rulers of the First Kingdom made their greatest promise."
Riva frowned.
"What promise?"
Queen Riva looked away.
"One I failed to keep."
---
Suddenly—
The mysterious box Aarvi had carried since Book One began shaking violently.
The locks opened one after another.
Click.
Click.
Click.
A hidden compartment slid open.
Inside lay the folded letter she had seen in her vision.
The paper looked impossibly new despite its age.
Across the front were written four words.
"To My Little Star."
Aarvi's hands trembled.
"My uncle..."
She slowly unfolded the letter.
The handwriting was unmistakably his.
She began reading aloud.
> My Little Star,
If you are reading this, it means the box has accepted you.
I could never tell you the truth while I was alive.
You were never meant to inherit this burden.
If Riva, Eva and Parna are standing beside you...
Then destiny has already begun.
Do not trust every Guardian.
Do not hate every Collector.
And remember...
The greatest lie in history is not how the First Kingdom disappeared.
The greatest lie...
...is who survived.
—Your Uncle
Silence filled the chamber.
Everyone slowly looked toward Caelum.
Then toward the Crown Collector.
Then toward Queen Riva.
Someone...
Had survived.
Someone history had erased.
---
Before anyone could speak—
The folded letter suddenly burst into silver flames.
Not burning.
Transforming.
The ashes floated into the air, forming the shape of a key.
Unlike the others...
This key was transparent.
It slowly drifted into Aarvi's hands.
Alaric's eyes widened.
"The Eighth Key..."
"It was hidden inside the letter all along."
---
The crystal sphere reacted immediately.
The map changed.
The path toward the Throne of Dawn opened.
At the same moment, the Devourer finally moved.
A single arm of darkness stretched toward the Observatory.
Not to destroy it.
To claim something.
Its countless eyes never left Riva.
Queen Riva suddenly drew her sword.
"So this is the moment..."
Older Lucien stood beside her.
"So history repeats."
The Crown Collector gripped his black staff.
"For once..."
"We fight together."
Even Caelum drew his ancient blade.
Cassian smiled.
"I never thought I'd see this day."
Enemies.
Guardians.
Future survivors.
The Six Heirs.
For the first time since the beginning of the story...
Everyone stood on the same side.
Riva looked at the approaching darkness.
Then at the people standing beside her.
"We don't know what awaits us."
"We don't know who will survive."
"But we're ending this together."
The Star Marks of the Six Heirs ignited simultaneously.
Six pillars of silver light shot into the heavens.
Far away, the Throne of Dawn awakened.
A single beam of golden light answered their call.
And hidden deep beneath that forgotten sanctuary...
A sleeping figure slowly opened their eyes.
They smiled and whispered only one sentence:
"The true heirs have finally found the Eighth Key."
