Chapter 137 - Being Human -> The Reckoning at Coilspire.

However, though all three islands shared the similarity of being guarded by dangerous beings, the fourth island was strikingly different. It had no monsters, no beasts, no guardians at all. Instead, it appeared calm and inviting, almost as if it were centered in a silent paradise untouched by corruption or strife.

The air was gentle, the waters surrounding it shimmered with tranquility, and not a single creature stirred to trouble a soul. Diego accepted this calm invitation and chose to investigate the island located in the middle of the vast body of water. Yet his instincts whispered caution, for in his experience most places that seemed too good to be true often concealed hidden perils.

The serenity felt deliberate, almost staged, and Diego could not shake the thought that beneath its peaceful surface lay secrets waiting to be revealed, perhaps even dangers more subtle than those of the other islands.

Sebastian arrived at Coilspire in an instant, though his skeleton was left bare. It seemed he had not yet mastered the act of teleporting his body together with his clothes, but that was trivial compared to the miracle of arrival. He could not help but gaze at his own bone structure—limbs, joints, and every intricate part that composed both his upper and lower skeletal frame.

He kept stealing glances at himself, almost infatuated, as though marveling at the strange perfection of his own anatomy. For a time he frantically checked, confirming again and again that his full body teleportation was a complete success and that not a single bone was missing. At last, relief washed over him, and he let out a long sigh, whispering to no one in particular:

[I can't believe that worked.]

Seeing that he was complete, Sebastian knew there was no time to hesitate any longer. He began tracking Maru, driven by urgency and the hope of finding his master swiftly so he could relay the events that had unfolded immediately after his disappearance.

As he moved, his thoughts darkened—he remembered Diego's attack, and disgust twisted his gaze as he recalled how he had failed to defeat Diego and was forced into surrender, leading to his capture. The memory stung like a fresh wound. He also remembered the assignment Maru had entrusted to him, noting bitterly that he had made no progress in locating Frank.

Still, determination carried him forward, his pace quick and eager, though it slowed when he realized he must prepare himself for the inevitable questions Maru would ask. Each step became heavier with anticipation, for Sebastian knew his master's scrutiny would be sharp, and he needed to steel his mind before approaching him.

Sebastian knew Maru would want to know, first and foremost, why he was here and not guarding the castle. Though Maru might not immediately ask about Frank's location, Sebastian still needed to prepare an answer in case the question arose.

Ever diligent, he rehearsed the replies he would give when approaching his master, shaping words in his mind like armor. Yet as he busied himself with thoughts of explanation—why he was here in Coilspire, how events had unfolded—a vast shadow fell across him.

At first he dismissed it, mistaking the darkness for the natural descent of night. But then, reaching into his connection with the world, Sebastian froze. The shadow was not the night at all, but the looming presence of a gigantic squid, its form blotting out the light and its aura pressing against him like a tide of dread.

The revelation stunned him, for the creature's enormity seemed to bend the very fabric of the waters and skies around Coilspire, a reminder that even his careful preparations could be shattered by forces beyond his control.

Diego arrived at the island surrounded by a vast volume of water, quiet, tranquil, and beautiful. For a moment, the serenity seemed unbroken—until a large red tentacle abruptly surged upward at the riverbank.

Its sudden appearance did not shock him as much as the speed with which it emerged, so swift that it even fazed his sharpened senses. For an instant, it seemed as though the tentacle had teleported into existence, materializing from nowhere.

Yet a few moments later, the truth revealed itself when the delayed sound of ripples and the violent splash reached his ears, confirming that the massive appendage had sprung upward from the depths. The water churned with force, and Diego realized he was witnessing not only raw power but a creature whose movements bent the rhythm of perception itself, a reminder that even the calmest paradise could conceal dangers waiting to strike.

A few meters before Sebastian, two figures stood stationed almost precisely between him and Diego. Sebastian moved cautiously behind them, hoping he was following the right path and that he would soon approach them. Meanwhile, Diego was several meters ahead, leaping across the massive cornerstones that formed stepping stones toward the eerily quiet island.

The two figures were none other than Maru and his companion—friend, teammate, familiar brother, and rival—Cord. Their presence carried a weight that seemed to anchor the space itself, as if the island's silence bent around them. Sebastian's anticipation grew heavier, for he knew that reaching Maru meant facing questions and judgment, while Diego's advance meant the island's secrets were about to be tested.

Between them, Maru and Cord stood like sentinels, embodying both alliance and rivalry, guardians of a moment that would soon decide the course of Coilspire's unfolding mysteries.

Seeing the full figure of the giant squid looming before them, its many eyes glinting with menace and its vast body radiating killing intent, Maru felt a wave of unease. The sheer scale of the creature pressed against his spirit, and for a fleeting moment he feared what its appearance meant and what was about to unfold.

Yet he brushed all fear aside, burying it deep within, for that was not the Darkovian way. With a firm, clear, and unwavering voice—one that betrayed no emotion and carried the faint conviction that he truly believed he would prevail against the monstrous squid—Maru declared:

[Come on, ugly bastard, bring it on!]

[I'm not afraid of you!]

The words rang out across the water, defiant and unyielding, a challenge hurled into the abyss.

Immediately after Maru's defiant words echoed across the water, Cord surged forward, charging with reckless speed. It was as if he felt no fear, as though the gigantic figure before him was invisible, or the memory of past clashes—where their cohort had suffered defeat and Cord himself had once been impaled—no longer mattered.

Even Maru feared that Cord's eagerness was not born of courage alone but infected by the confidence he himself had projected. For a fleeting moment, Maru considered halting him, stopping his reckless advance, and confessing the truth of his own terror.

Yet before he could act, memories of their long‑lasting bond—friendship, rivalry, and brotherhood forged through countless battles—rose within him. A smile broke across his face, faint but resolute. Casting aside hesitation, Maru no longer showed fear in his movements. Instead, he charged toward the monstrous squid with equal speed, side by side with Cord, their steps synchronized by shared resolve. Together, they embodied the Darkovian creed: to face overwhelming foes with unity, defiance, and the unshakable will to emerge victorious.
