Chapter 97 - Fractures Beneath the Surface

The hideout felt different.

Not safer.

Just… quieter.

Aiden sat on a metal bench inside the resistance medical room. White light reflected off the walls, making everything feel cold and exposed.

Bandages wrapped around his arm and shoulder. Fresh cuts lined his face.

He hadn't said much since they got back.

Didn't need to.

His body said enough.

Across from him, Hana leaned against the wall, arms crossed.

Watching him.

Not as a strategist.

Not as someone analyzing a situation.

Just… watching.

"You pushed too far," she said finally.

Aiden didn't look up.

"Yeah."

The answer came too easily.

That annoyed her more than if he argued.

"You almost lost control."

"I didn't."

"That's not the point."

Silence.

Aiden exhaled slowly.

"…it was close."

Hana stepped forward.

"How close?"

He hesitated.

For the first time He didn't have a casual answer.

"…I don't know."

That hit harder than anything else.

Back in the main control room, the resistance members were already working.

Screens filled with data from the battle.

Energy readings.

Movement logs.

System behavior.

One of the engineers spoke up.

"We've confirmed it."

Another looked over.

"Confirmed what?"

He turned the screen.

"Final Constant isn't just adapting anymore."

Hana walked in, Aiden following slowly behind her.

"What do you mean?"

The engineer zoomed into the data.

"During the second round, its core system started restructuring itself mid-fight."

He tapped the screen.

"That's not adaptation."

He paused.

"That's evolution."

The room went quiet.

Another resistance member leaned in.

"So what does that mean for us?"

The answer came immediately.

"It means next time…"

The engineer swallowed.

"…it won't make the same mistakes."

Aiden leaned against a console, arms folded.

"…figured."

Hana glanced at him.

"You don't sound surprised."

"I'm not."

He looked at the data.

All the predictions.

All the patterns.

All the near-perfect calculations.

"…it already started figuring me out."

The engineer nodded.

"And you did the same to it."

Aiden didn't respond.

Because that wasn't entirely true.

He hadn't figured it out.

He had just…

broken it temporarily.

Hana crossed her arms again.

"So what's our move?"

The room shifted.

From analysis To strategy.

The lead engineer brought up a city-wide map.

Red zones marked system activity.

Blue points marked resistance operations.

"We can't fight it head-on again," he said.

"Not like that."

Aiden raised an eyebrow.

"Then what?"

The engineer zoomed into several underground sectors.

"Final Constant relies on system-wide calculations."

He tapped the screen.

"If we disrupt the network just slightly we can reduce its prediction accuracy."

Hana's eyes narrowed.

"You're talking about interfering with the system itself."

"Exactly."

Another member spoke.

"That's dangerous."

"No," the engineer replied.

"Fighting it directly is dangerous."

Aiden smirked slightly.

"Fair point."

Hana looked between them.

"So what's the plan?"

The screen shifted again.

Highlighted points appeared across the city.

"Multiple strike points."

"Small teams."

"Disrupt key nodes."

He looked at Aiden.

"And you…"

A small pause.

"…you don't fight it yet."

Aiden blinked.

"…what?"

Hana didn't hesitate.

"I agree."

He looked at her.

"You serious?"

She stepped closer.

"Yes."

Her voice wasn't emotional.

It was firm.

"You need time."

Aiden shook his head slightly.

"That thing is evolving. We don't have time."

Hana stepped even closer.

"And if you lose control next time?"

Silence.

"…then what?"

That question stayed in the air.

Unanswered.

Aiden looked away.

"…I won't."

Hana didn't back down.

"You don't know that."

Another silence.

Heavier.

Sharper.

Finally Aiden exhaled.

"…so what, I just sit out?"

The engineer shook his head.

"No."

He pulled up another data screen.

Energy readings.

Unstable spikes.

"You train."

Aiden frowned.

"…train?"

Hana looked at the screen.

Then at Aiden.

"You need to understand that power."

Her voice softened slightly.

"Before it destroys you."

Aiden stared at the data.

At the unstable energy patterns.

At the thing he almost unleashed.

"…yeah."

For once He didn't argue.

Far away Deep within the system core Final Constant stood motionless.

Its form surrounded by streams of evolving code.

[V3 PROTOCOL: 12% COMPLETE]

The machine was changing.

Faster than before.

More dangerous than ever.

Back in the hideout Aiden clenched his fist slowly.

"…next time," he muttered.

Not just to the machine.

But to himself.

This time—

He would be ready.
