By the time the golden rays of the morning sun began creeping through his bedroom window, illuminating the fine dust floating in the air, James was deep in the trenches of his research.
His heavy wooden desk was practically hidden beneath a chaotic spread of open spiral notebooks, hastily scribbled equations, and a monitor packed with dozens of browser tabs.
His mind was practically buzzing, working overtime as he strained to bridge the gap between raw physical laws and arcane spellcasting.
"So, I can probably pull that off with magic..." he muttered to himself, leaning forward until his forehead almost touched the cool glass of his screen.
His brain was spinning a mile a minute, conjuring up an endless stream of concepts for new spells.
There were so many ideas he wanted to test right then and there, but the stern, sharp warnings from Thane's enchanted letter immediately echoed in his head, acting like a splash of ice water that kept his excitement firmly in check.
He paused mid-thought, a sudden, cold wave of panic hitting him square in the chest.
"Wait... they didn't even tell me how to get back to the territory," he muttered aloud, his brow furrowing as he stared blankly at his keyboard. How was he supposed to return to the base when the time came?
He stopped, resting his elbow on the desk and thoughtfully rubbing his chin.
Maybe he could head out toward Mercer Lake and try to backtrack his steps into the deep woods from there.
Mercer Lake fell well within the outer perimeter of werewolf territory, so he was fairly certain the pack's boundary wards would pick up his presence the moment he stepped foot near the tree line.
Wait—sense him?
A chilling realization struck him like a bolt of lightning, freezing him in his seat. They could probably pick up his signature or scent even while he was sitting right here in his own apartment.
He let out a breathless, dry laugh, mentally thanking his lucky stars that he wasn't a gooner.
The absolute last thing he needed was to become infamous across the entire supernatural underworld as "James the Meat Beater."
He had also recently pieced together that werewolf last names weren't traditional family names passed down through generations.
Aside from Luna and her father, most wolves in the pack didn't share family names in the standard human way.
They seemed to follow a much more ancient, Nordic warrior tradition, adopting titles based on personal physical traits or bloody combat deeds.
Take Kaelen Ironclaw, for example—the guy's title literally gave the entire naming convention away.
James shivered at the horrifying thought of earning a moniker like that. James the Master Baiter.
Just thinking the words made him cringe so hard his skin crawled and his toes curled.
He forced his eyes away from that nightmare scenario and glanced over at the digital clock glowing in the corner of his monitor. It read 6:50 AM.
Today was Monday, which meant his schedule was stacked with back-to-back History and Math lectures.
His History class didn't kick off until 8:50 AM, giving him plenty of time to shake off the morning haze, grab a bite to eat, and make the trek over to campus.
Deciding it was time to move, he stood up from his squeaking gaming chair, stretched his stiff lower back until his spine popped, and padded across the dark wood floor to his en-suite bathroom.
Stepping into the glass enclosure, he turned the brass handles and let the steaming hot water cascade over his face and shoulders, instantly melting away the lingering mental exhaustion of an all-night study session.
The thick steam rose, completely fogging up the glass, and for a few quiet minutes, he just leaned his head back against the tile, letting the heat work out the deep, knotty tension in his muscles.
Once he finished scrubbing down, he stepped out onto the bathmat, wrapped a plush towel around his waist, and pulled on a fresh, clean set of clothes.
Moving back over to the vanity mirror, he wiped a clear circle through the fog on the glass and turned his full attention to his hair.
He was not about to step foot on campus looking like he'd been dragged through a hedge backward.
He ended up dedicating a solid forty minutes to his hair alone, meticulously combing, drying, and applying product until every single strand was styled and locked firmly into place.
Standing in front of the vanity, he tilted his head from side to side, running a fingers through his damp locks.
They were definitely getting pretty long. He wondered if he should just book an appointment with a barber and get a fresh cut sometime soon.
Oh well, he thought, giving his reflection one last critical once-over. That's a problem for future me.
Checking his phone clock, James saw that it was 7:00 AM sharp. He reached for his device, swiped open the lock screen, and tapped the purple Discord icon.
He really needed to check in on Michael, drop a pin to let him know he was back in civilization, and see how the guy was holding up.
A tiny flicker of genuine concern crossed his mind. The absolute last time he had crossed paths with Michael, James had completely succumbed to his wild hybrid instincts and practically attempted to tear the guy's throat out
. Still, knowing his buddy's ridiculously resilient nature, he was pretty confident Michael had bounced back without a scratch.
Swiping open their direct message history, James scrolled up past the blank space to check their last real exchange:
{Vampirelover}Meet me at the park
{WildBoy}Give me time to change first
{WildBoy}No gay shit
Those messages were timestamped roughly a month ago. Looking at the date, James realized this was the longest their chat had ever been dead since they first became friends back in freshman year.
Before this whole supernatural mess, the longest gap between their texts was maybe four days at most, though his memory of that time was a bit foggy.
He tapped on the text box and sent a swift update:
{WildBoy}Yo, I am back
Setting the phone screen-down on his desk, he figured he wouldn't get a response for a couple of hours. Michael was usually dead to the world at this time of morning.
He paused mid-turn, leaning his hip against his desk. Wait... do vampires even actually need to sleep?
If magic worked the way he was beginning to understand it, blood acted as a primary conductor for a living organism's essence and residual mana reserves.
After all, if biological matter didn't hold raw magical properties, blood rituals wouldn't be nearly as potent or dangerous as they were.
James had witnessed firsthand what his own hybrid blood could accomplish when ignited by sheer adrenaline.
By that exact logic, when a vampire bit someone and drank, weren't they essentially siphoning off that person's refined life force and raw mana?
If feeding constantly replenished their internal energy levels, wouldn't that mean a well-fed vampire could go indefinitely without ever needing to sleep?
His mind raced even further down the rabbit hole. Could they temporarily absorb another creature's magical elemental affinity through their blood?
If a vampire drained a powerful water mage dry, would they temporarily gain a natural talent for water manipulation?
It probably wouldn't be a permanent upgrade—they'd likely need to consume hundreds of mages to permanently alter their core—but as a temporary tactical buff, it made scary amounts of sense.
Buzz!
The sudden, violent vibration of his phone against the bare desk wood shattered his heavy train of thought.
Surprised that Michael was even awake, let alone glued to his phone at seven in the morning, James reached over and flipped the device up.
His eyes fell on the screen, and his left eyebrow twitched violently.
{Wildboy ButtPlug}Master… you finally remember me
James stared at the glowing screen in utter, speechless disbelief, his jaw hanging slightly open.
He blinked once, twice, taking a second to make sure his sleep-deprived eyes weren't playing tricks on him.
Michael had literally gone out of his way to edit his nickname in their private chat to something completely unhinged just to mess with him the exact second he logged back on.
Rubbing his throbbing temples, James aggressively slammed his thumbs against the screen glass:
{WildBoy}The fuck is that username?!
A split second later, the green typing indicator popped up, followed by a rapid-fire string of text from Michael, who was clearly enjoying every single second of James's sheer irritation.
{Wildboy ButtPlug}What? I thought we were expressing our true feelings now that you're back from your secret month-long retreat.
{Wildboy ButtPlug}I missed you too, by the way. But seriously, change it back yourself if it bothers you so much, 'Master.'
James groaned aloud to the empty room, dragging his palm down his face. Yep, Michael is definitely doing just fine.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, typing out his response with deliberate force:
{WildBoy}I swear to God, Michael, I leave for ONE month and you completely lose your damn mind.
He stood there staring at the screen, shaking his head. He could practically hear Michael's annoying, smug chuckle echoing through the speaker.
{Wildboy ButtPlug}Hey, they don't call me the Big Name for no reason around these parks.
James rubbed his temples again, a soft groan bubbling up in his chest as his thumbs hovered over the keys.
Was this idiot seriously trying to act like a smooth-talking flirt at seven in the morning?
{Wildboy ButtPlug}Remove the "with" and you got it.....
James froze mid-breath, his eyes widening slightly before he burst into a quiet, genuine laugh.
The absolute sheer audacity of this vampire was unreal. He hesitated for a brief second, letting a subtle, warm smile soften his face before typing back:
{WildBoy}...missed you too, idiot.
{WildBoy}Anyway, I'm heading back to campus today. I missed a absurd amount of stuff.
Instead of a response about setting up a meeting spot, the very first notification that popped up was a direct reply to his missed you too, idiot text.
It was a animated GIF.
Specifically, an anime GIF of an overly dramatic Tsundere blushing furiously and pouting with her arms crossed.
{Wildboy ButtPlug}This you?
James's smile instantly vanished, replaced by an intense, dark glare aimed at the screen.
{WildBoy}I will literally strangle you.
{Wildboy ButtPlug}Don't threaten me with a good time.
James exhaled sharply through his nose, deciding to bypass the banter before his brain completely fried.
{WildBoy}Can we simply meet before class?
{Wildboy ButtPlug}Say less. Meet me by the quad before class. We have a LOT to talk about—and I expect a full explanation, "Master."
James's left eye twitched again at the stubborn refusal to drop the title, his thumbs moving at lightspeed as he fired off one final warning shot:
{WildBoy}Change the damn nickname first or I'm literally throwing you into the middle of Mercer Lake.
{Wildboy ButtPlug}Fine, fine! Ruin all my fun. See you at 8:30.
James tossed his phone onto the messy bedsheets with a wry, amused smirk, letting out a long, heavy breath.
Leave it to Michael to take a month of intense, life-altering supernatural trauma and reduce it to just another hilarious, chaotic Tuesday.
It was weirdly grounding—a solid, familiar anchor holding him to his normal life amidst all the terrifying werewolf and magic nonsense he was now dragged into.
Slinging his heavy backpack over one shoulder, James unlocked his bedroom door and stepped out into the hallway, his leather boots clicking softly against the polished dark wood flooring.
He made his way down to the kitchen, where the crisp morning sunlight was streaming through the windows and washing over the marble island.
Moving with practiced efficiency, he pulled a cast-iron skillet from the cabinet, cracked three eggs directly into the hot pan, and dropped two thick slices of sourdough into the toaster.
He whipped up a quick, high-protein breakfast, practically inhaling the food in absolute record time before rinsing his plate clean in the sink.
Checking the clock on the microwave, he scooped his truck keys and leather wallet off the counter. It was finally time to head to campus and face the music.
Meanwhile, a few miles away in a high-rise luxury apartment overlooking the city, the early morning light filtered through heavy velvet curtains, casting long shadows across a chaotic bedroom.
Michael tossed his phone onto the nightstand, letting out a low, satisfied chuckle as he ran a hand through his messy blond hair.
He was completely naked, stretched out across silk sheets that reeked of expensive wine and copper.
Resting heavily against his chest was a pale, bare shoulder surrounded by a cascade of platinum blonde hair.
It was Alliyah.
She fit every single box of the classic, textbook hot-blonde bimbo—gorgeous, wildly popular on campus, and completely lacking any substance behind her bright blue eyes.
Michael looked down at her with a cool, indifferent gaze, watching the slow, rhythmic rise and fall of her chest.
Well, he thought, a faint, cold smirk touching his lips, now that James is back, I guess I can stop playing with this toy.
He carefully shifted his weight, sliding out from under her and swinging his legs over the edge of the mattress.
The sudden movement stirred her.
Alliyah's eyes fluttered open, heavy with sleep and completely dazed as she pushed herself up on one elbow, the bedsheet slipping down to her waist.
She blinked, watching him stand up in all his flawless, pale glory.
"Mm... Mikey?" she rasped, her voice thick and high-pitched. "Where are you going? It's so early..."
"Class," Michael replied smoothly, picking up a crisp, designer button-down shirt from the floor and tossing it over his shoulders.
Alliyah sat up faster, her posture perking up as she offered a pouty, eager grin. "Wait! Don't go yet! I wanted to show you this new thing I learned—"
Michael turned around slowly, cutting her off with a smooth, hypnotic step toward the bed.
He leaned down, placing one hand beside her knee as his eyes bled into a deep, luminous crimson.
Alliyah didn't even notice the shift.
She just stared up at him, completely entranced.
"Sleep, sweet girl," Michael murmured, his voice laced with a subtle, heavy compulsion that
rippled through the air. "You did so well. You're exhausted."
A faint, glassy crimson sheen reflected in her pupils for a brief fraction of a second. Her eyelids instantly grew heavy, her energetic smile melting into a blank, docile expression.
"Yeah..." she muttered vaguely, her head drooping back onto the plush pillows. "Sleep..."
Within seconds, her breathing evened out into a deep, unbroken slumber.
Michael straightened up, his eyes fading back to their natural dark shade. He finished buttoning his shirt, pulled on a pair of tailored slacks, and grabbed a bottle of high-end cologne, spritzing it over his wrists and collar.
Stepping over to the full-length mirror, he tilted his head to inspect a dark red hickey stamped near his collarbone.
With a mild scoff of annoyance, he focused his intent, channeling a tiny trace of vampiric energy to flush the bruised blood out of the tissue until his skin was pale and flawless once again.
He checked his gold watch, ran a comb through his dark locks, and grabbed his leather jacket.
"Time to go see the wolf," he whispered to his reflection, stepping out of the apartment and slipping into the morning breeze.
A/N Had school, so chapter came late.
Anyway vote with powerstones.
