Chapter 27 - Chapter 26: Karnataka vs. Mumbai – The Test

The Karnataka U-16 team was ready, but there was an air of tension around the players as they made their way to the stadium for their first official practice match. They weren't just playing for pride—this match was a statement. Against the Mumbai U-16 team, known for producing prodigies, every player knew this was the first true test of their potential.

Rudra stood at the edge of the dressing room, watching as his teammates prepared. He could feel the nervous energy in the air. Raghav Kothari, the captain, was leading warm-ups with his usual intensity. But Rudra was different. He wasn't nervous. He was already thinking several steps ahead, anticipating every move, every bowler, every tactic. In his mind, the game had already started.

...

Sher Shrivastava (Commentary):

"Aaj toh, Rudra Sharma ka maidan pe asli rang dekhenge! Yeh match na sirf apne liye, par apne academy ke liye bhi hai. Har ball mein, har shot mein, ek message jaana hai."

(Today, we'll see Rudra Sharma's true colors on the field! This match is not just for him, but for his academy as well. Every ball, every shot—there's a message in it.)

...

The match began with Mumbai winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Rudra, as expected, was the first batsman in. He took his stance, the bat in his hands feeling like an extension of his own body. His mind was focused, the perfect balance between calmness and intensity. He had been through tough situations before, but this felt different. The weight of expectations—his own and others'—was there, but he embraced it.

The Mumbai pacer, Rohit Soni, a 15-year-old prodigy with a venomous bouncer, ran in from the far end. His reputation for speed preceded him, and the Mumbai team had high hopes for him in this game. His delivery was quick, almost dangerously so, as it whizzed past Rudra's head on the first ball.

...

Dr. V.V. Subramanium (Commentary):

"Rohit Soni's pace is something to behold. But Rudra Sharma looks unfazed. He's not just watching the ball, he's reading it. That's the mind of a true cricketer."

...

Rudra stood his ground, the ball racing past him. The crowd's murmur echoed in the background as they watched the young boy face one of the fastest bowlers in the country. It was just a glimpse of what was to come.

On the next delivery, Rohit Soni bowled a bouncer again. But this time, Rudra was ready. He ducked under it, just as the ball sailed over his head. He could sense Rohit's frustration. The bowler paced back to his mark, clearly trying to figure out how to get the young batsman out. But Rudra, his mind ticking, had already plotted his next move.

The next delivery came—a full-length ball. Rudra had already seen this coming. He stepped forward and timed it perfectly, driving the ball cleanly down the ground. The ball raced past the bowler for four.

...

Action Anand (Commentary):

"Wooooow! Ye hai Rudra Sharma ki batting ka naya rang! Full ball ko line pe laye, aur ball ne jaise zameen se baat ki! Four! Yeh match toh ab bas Sharma ki baton pe chal raha hai!"

(Wooooow! This is the new shade of Rudra Sharma's batting! He played that full ball right on the line, and the ball seemed to talk to the ground! Four! This match is now all about Sharma!)

...

But the Mumbai team was relentless. Rohit was back at it again, looking to bowl his fastest delivery yet. He steamed in and delivered a searing bouncer. But Rudra wasn't bothered. With the flick of his wrists, he pulled the ball over square leg for another boundary. The crowd went wild, and Rudra's teammates cheered from the sidelines. They were witnessing something special.

The Mumbai captain, Ajay Mishra, who was fielding at mid-on, exchanged a few words with Rohit, and a new strategy was clearly being discussed. Rudra could see it in their eyes: they were starting to target him more aggressively. But that was exactly what he wanted. He had already calculated every scenario in his head. He wasn't just a player on the field—he was the strategist.

...

Major Rathore (Commentary):

"I must say, I am impressed. He's playing shots that most 16-year-olds would hesitate to attempt. This Rudra Sharma is showing us something we didn't expect from a 13-year-old. The pace doesn't seem to faze him one bit."

...

The game continued at a breakneck pace. Rudra played like a man on a mission, hitting boundaries and rotating the strike with calculated efficiency. But Mumbai's bowling attack was tough. They fought back, tightening their grip as the innings wore on. Rudra had to dig deep, and he could feel his stamina beginning to dip. But he kept his composure, using his [Stamina LVL 22] to push through.

Then came the turning point—Rohit Soni was replaced by Karan Patel, a spinner who had taken the wickets of some top players in the past. Karan bowled a well-flighted delivery, the ball spinning viciously. Rudra waited for it, timing his shot with perfect precision. He launched it over long-on for a massive six. The crowd erupted into applause, and even the Mumbai players stood in awe.

...

Sher Shrivastava (Commentary):

"Chhakka! Karan Patel ki doosra ko kahan chhoda! Ball ne toh khojli marte hue stadium ke chaand ke paas pahuch gaya! Abhi toh Rudra ne Mumbai ko bhi apne taraf kar liya hai!"

(Six! Karan Patel's doosra didn't stand a chance! The ball went on a journey like it was heading to the moon! Now Rudra's made Mumbai his ally!)

...

By the time Rudra was dismissed for 85 runs off 55 balls, the damage had been done. Karnataka's total was formidable, and they were now in a commanding position. As Rudra walked off the field, his teammates gave him an appreciative nod. Raghav Kothari, the captain, clapped him on the back.

...

Raghav:

"Not bad, kid. You've earned your place here."

...

Sher Shrivastava (Commentary):

"Aur yeh hai Rudra Sharma ka pehla chapter! Mumbai ne jo socha tha, uske jawab mein ek aur star ka janm ho gaya! Yeh ladka toh har field mein aag laga raha hai!"

(And this is Rudra Sharma's first chapter! What Mumbai thought would happen, in response, a new star has been born! This boy is setting the field on fire!)

...

Karnataka ended the first innings with a total of 275/6, a challenging target for Mumbai. As they took the field, Rudra felt the weight of his contribution. This match wasn't just about his runs; it was about proving himself on the national stage. He had done that and more.
