Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 Capturing the Clown

The Batcave swallowed the Batmobile's engine roar as the vehicle slid into its docking cradle beneath Wayne Manor.

Steam hissed. Hydraulic locks engaged.

And strapped to the reinforced chassis like a particularly unpleasant trophy—

The Joker.

Alfred removed his glasses slowly.

"Oh my."

Li Jie didn't slow down.

"Later," he said. "Medical first."

He lifted Selina Kyle—Catwoman—from the vehicle roof, adjusting his grip as she shifted slightly in his arms. Even unconscious, she looked irritated, like she might wake up mid-argument.

Alfred stepped forward quickly, all prior shock replaced by clinical efficiency.

"This way."

They moved through the cavern's lower corridor into one of Bruce Wayne's unused recovery suites—minimalist, reinforced, medically equipped. Alfred keyed in the access code and the lights came up soft and warm.

Li Jie laid her carefully on the bed.

"She inhaled Joker toxin," he said. "Small dose. I neutralized most of it, but she had exposure."

Alfred was already scanning her vitals.

"Pulse elevated. Pupillary response delayed but stabilizing." He exhaled softly. "She will live."

Li Jie leaned back against the wall, finally allowing tension to drain from his shoulders.

"For someone who claims not to like her," Alfred observed gently, "you carried her as though she were made of glass."

"She talks too much."

"And yet you shielded her first."

Li Jie didn't answer that.

On the main platform outside, the Joker began laughing again.

Even restrained.

Even unconscious moments earlier.

Now awake.

Of course.

Alfred closed the medical pod halfway and activated mild sedation for Selina.

"She will sleep for several hours. The toxin residue will metabolize safely."

"Good."

Alfred turned toward the cavern.

"And what, precisely, is your plan for him?"

They stepped back into the main chamber.

The Joker sat upright now, wrists bound in Wayne-tech restraints, ankles locked to the Batmobile frame. His head tilted as they approached, grin already stretching ear to ear.

"Well," he said brightly, "this is cozy."

Li Jie stopped a few feet away.

"You don't look like him under the mask," the Joker continued conversationally. "He stands differently. Breathes differently."

"You talk too much," Li Jie replied flatly.

The Joker's eyes glittered.

"And yet here we are again."

Alfred folded his hands behind his back.

"Sir, if I may—housing him here is strategically inadvisable."

"No kidding," Li Jie muttered.

He crouched to eye level with the Joker.

"You wired Wayne Tower. You threatened a hundred people."

The Joker shrugged as much as restraints allowed.

"You didn't let me press it."

"You never would have," Li Jie said.

The Joker paused.

Then laughed again.

"Oh, but I would have."

Li Jie studied him carefully.

Here was the difference between myth and reality.

Batman believed the Joker valued chaos over self-destruction.

Li Jie wasn't so sure.

This man didn't fear death.

He feared boredom.

"Why didn't you trigger it when I ran?" Li Jie asked calmly.

The Joker's smile thinned.

"Because I was curious."

There it was.

Curiosity.

Not fear.

Not restraint.

Curiosity.

Alfred's expression tightened slightly. "Master Li, prolonged proximity is ill-advised. He destabilizes through dialogue."

"I noticed."

Li Jie stood.

"Temporary containment cell. Is the lower vault operational?"

"Yes," Alfred replied. "Reinforced composite, independent power, oxygen-regulated."

"Good."

As Alfred moved to activate the underground holding chamber, the Joker began humming.

"You're different," he called out. "You don't have his guilt."

Li Jie didn't turn.

"And you don't have his rules."

That made him pause.

The Joker leaned forward slightly, chains rattling.

"You knocked me unconscious."

"Yes."

"He wouldn't."

"Yes."

The Joker's grin returned slowly.

"Now this is interesting."

Two automated rails descended from the cave ceiling and locked into the Batmobile chassis. The Joker was lifted—vehicle and all—and transported toward a sealed lower chamber.

Heavy doors opened with a hydraulic groan.

Before he disappeared inside, the Joker called out one last time:

"You're growing into the role."

The doors slammed shut.

Silence.

Only the hum of machinery remained.

Alfred removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose.

"With respect," he said quietly, "you escalated tonight."

"I prevented detonation."

"You suffocated over a hundred armed criminals with botanical constriction."

"They're alive."

"Barely."

Li Jie met his gaze.

"Would Bruce have done differently?"

Alfred didn't answer immediately.

After a moment, he said, "Master Wayne would have found another way."

"Maybe."

Li Jie crossed his arms.

"But he isn't here."

That truth lingered between them.

Alfred studied him carefully.

"You are changing."

Li Jie smirked faintly.

"Leveling up."

"I beg your pardon?"

"Nothing."

Up in Gotham, Wayne Tower was being reclaimed.

Below, in the cave, a new equilibrium was forming.

Li Jie glanced toward the medical wing.

"Monitor Selina," he said. "When she wakes up, she'll be furious."

"Undoubtedly."

"And Alfred?"

"Yes?"

"If Gordon asks how it was done—"

"I shall say only that Batman was… efficient."

Li Jie nodded.

Good.

The symbol mattered more than the method.

He turned toward the central console, pulling up schematics of Wayne Tower.

Power grid restoration. Civilian extraction routes. Zombie flow projections.

This wasn't about theatrics anymore.

It was infrastructure.

Stability.

Control.

Behind reinforced steel and layered containment fields, the Joker began laughing again—soft, patient, entertained.

Alfred glanced toward the holding cell display.

"Sir," he said gently, "geniuses are most dangerous when intrigued."

Li Jie didn't look up from the holographic grid.

"Then let him be intrigued."

He adjusted the projection and began mapping the next district.

Gotham wasn't saved by one victory.

But tonight—

The board had shifted.
