Near Jupiter, the vacuum was no longer silent.
Ordinarily, that region of space was nothing but cold darkness and drifting dust. Today, it looked like the inside of a dying star.
Over a million warships filled the void, formations breaking and reforming in blinding bursts of light. Energy beams carved across space like furious comets. Every flash meant annihilation. Every expanding fireball marked another vessel erased from existence.
In the flagship of the Alliance of Gods, Zeus stood motionless.
Sweat streamed down his temples. His eyes were shut tight, veins bulging against pale skin. His armor flickered faintly as if still resisting something unseen.
Then—
His eyes snapped open.
Bloodshot. Wild.
He gasped for breath like a drowning man breaking the surface.
Thanos was gone.
The invisible pressure crushing his mind had vanished.
Only then did Zeus realize his hands were trembling.
His attendants rushed forward the moment they sensed the psychic assault had lifted.
"Your Majesty, what are your orders?"
"Thanos's fleet is counterattacking—we've taken severe losses!"
"Hela is unstoppable—she's destroyed hundreds of ships already!"
"And Thor… Thor is dead. Please, God-King—command us!"
Zeus's expression twisted. "Silence!"
The chamber froze.
Whatever his personal vices, he was still the God-King. And more importantly, father of Hercules. No one present wished to test either title.
After several long seconds, Zeus straightened his back, forcing dignity into his posture.
"How fares the battlefield?"
"Thanos has left the front line for unknown reasons."
"The Obsidian commanders now lead his forces. Hela and Laufey spearhead their assault. We are being pushed back."
"Our numbers were already inferior, and we have no one capable of matching Hela or Laufey head-on."
Zeus exhaled slowly.
"A pity my son Hercules is absent," he said, voice heavy with theatrical regret. "Otherwise, these petty invaders would have been crushed long ago."
The gods exchanged glances.
They understood.
This was not grief.
This was an exit strategy.
Zeus had no true stake in the Milky Way. His assistance to Thor had been strategic—an opportunity to absorb Asgard's remnants and test Thanos's strength. Now Thor was dead. Thanos was stronger than anticipated.
The risk outweighed the reward.
One god stepped forward. "Your Majesty, perhaps we should temporarily withdraw and await Hercules's return."
"Yes," another added quickly. "Thanos is a brute. Not worth dying for."
"We could destabilize his holdings. Support planetary uprisings. Undermine him slowly."
"Exactly. No need for direct confrontation."
Zeus nodded thoughtfully, though satisfaction flickered in his eyes.
"You speak wisely," he said. "However, if we retreat outright, Thanos may mistake prudence for fear. We shall first annihilate his vanguard. Let him understand the price of defiance."
He lifted his chin proudly, like a rooster convinced the sunrise was for his benefit.
The gods erupted in praise.
Zeus smiled broadly, already basking in admiration.
The war would continue.
But on his terms.
—
On Earth.
Specifically, above the United States.
The night was warm—summer, judging by the gentle atmospheric currents. City lights stretched across the continent like glowing veins.
Beside Thanos hovered Jean Grey, her body wreathed in faint crimson-gold embers—the successor to the Phoenix Force.
From orbit, the planet looked peaceful.
It wasn't.
Thanos's mind extended outward like an unseen tide.
He felt everything.
Armed robberies unfolding in dim alleys.Gang disputes turning violent.Whispers of hatred.Political corruption behind closed doors.Desperation disguised as ambition.
Civilization glowed brightly.
Human hearts did not.
He watched silently, absorbing it all.
"This will end," he murmured.
In his mind, conquest was mercy.
Order was salvation.
And he had come to deliver both.
A ripple of spatial energy tugged at his awareness.
He vanished.
Moments later, he stood within a fortified S.H.I.E.L.D. installation. Cold steel corridors. Emergency lockdown protocols flickering faintly. At the center of a sealed chamber sat the Tesseract—dormant, contained.
The Space Stone had not been reclaimed.
Which meant Doctor Strange had not returned.
Thanos stared at the silent cube.
A slight frown creased his face.
For the first time that night—
He looked inconvenienced.
Because of the Time Stone, catching Doctor Strange was almost impossible. He could peer into countless futures. Unless he chose to expose himself, no one could truly corner him.
Which meant the Tesseract had to be guarded the old-fashioned way.
Inside the S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and a dozen S.H.I.E.L.D. soldiers stood watch over the Cosmic Cube.
They weren't cosmic-level beings. They couldn't survive in the vacuum of space, couldn't trade blows with gods or Titans. So they stayed behind—the last line of defense at home base.
They were waiting for Doctor Strange's signal to open a portal and bring the others back.
But they wouldn't get that chance.
A shadow fell across the compound.
A towering purple figure descended slowly from the sky.
Hawkeye's instincts reacted first. His posture stiffened. His eyes sharpened.
"Who are you?" he demanded, already drawing his bowstring back to full tension. "This is S.H.I.E.L.D. territory. Unauthorized entry is prohibited."
Beside him, Black Widow moved just as fast. She triggered the alarm system with one hand while smoothly drawing twin pistols from her thighs with the other. Her stance lowered, precise and steady.
The twelve soldiers raised their rifles in unison. Safety catches clicked off.
The air grew tight.
Thanos said nothing.
He simply raised his left hand.
A faint yellow light shimmered.
The next second, the twelve soldiers' eyes glowed an unnatural blue.
Without hesitation, they pivoted—guns now aimed at Hawkeye and Black Widow.
Gunfire exploded in the enclosed space.
The betrayal happened so fast it was almost surreal.
Hawkeye's arrow never left the bow.
Black Widow's finger barely tightened on the trigger.
They were riddled with bullets before they could even process what had happened. Their bodies collapsed almost simultaneously, lifeless before they hit the ground.
At Thanos's level, conversation was a courtesy reserved for equals.
He did not waste words on beings he could erase with a flick of his hand.
Without slowing down, he strode forward toward the Cosmic Cube—the Tesseract humming with restrained blue energy.
Behind him, the mind-controlled soldiers dropped to one knee in silent obedience.
Then—
A missile screamed through the air.
It struck Thanos squarely.
The explosion roared through the compound, fire and dust erupting outward in a violent shockwave.
Emerging from behind reinforced cover stood Nick Fury—black-skinned, bald, one eye sharp as ever, the other hidden beneath his familiar patch.
He discarded the spent launcher from his shoulder without hesitation and reached for a heavy machine gun.
But before he could squeeze the trigger, the controlled soldiers turned on him.
Gunfire erupted again.
Fury dove instinctively, but reinforcements flooded into the corridor at that exact moment. Loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. troops opened fire on the twelve compromised soldiers without a second thought.
The controlled men fell under concentrated fire.
The gunshots echoed, overlapping with the fading rumble of the explosion.
Then silence.
All eyes turned toward the smoke-filled impact site.
Slowly, the dust began to settle.
A massive silhouette emerged from the haze.
Unscathed.
Not even his armor bore a scratch.
Nick Fury narrowed his remaining eye.
He didn't hesitate.
With a sharp wave of his hand, he barked the silent order.
The soldiers opened fire again.
"Da-da-da-da—"
Bullets struck Thanos in a relentless stream, sparks flying where metal met flesh.
The Titan continued walking forward.
Each step was steady.
Unstoppable.
The gunfire sounded smaller and smaller with every pace he took.
