Chapter 73 - Chapter 73 – Monsters Collide While Heroes Misfire

With a thunderous burst of flame, Tony Stark shot into the sky, his armor cutting through the air with precision before disappearing into the distance. His departure was so sudden, so decisive, that it left the remaining Avengers frozen mid-performance, their carefully rehearsed speeches abruptly rendered meaningless.

For a brief moment, the stage fell into an awkward silence, the crowd unsure whether to applaud or panic. The contrast between Tony's action and their words was stark, almost embarrassing.

Clint Barton was the first to break the tension, glancing toward Steve Rogers with a raised brow. "Cap… are we moving or what?" he asked, his tone practical but edged with impatience.

Steve didn't hesitate for long. He straightened his posture, his expression firm as he answered with conviction. "Of course we're going. We're a team, aren't we?" The words sounded resolute, but there was an undercurrent of urgency that couldn't be ignored.

Before anyone else could respond, Natasha Romanoff had already acted. She vaulted cleanly off the stage, landing with effortless grace before striding toward the street, where a sleek black motorcycle waited. In one smooth motion, she mounted it, the engine roaring to life beneath her.

"We'll wrap this up fast," she said, her voice calm but decisive as she sped off.

By the time the Avengers began mobilizing, the situation in Queens had already spiraled further out of control.

In a cramped corner of a dimly lit space, Gwen Stacy pressed herself against the wall, her face pale as she watched the monstrous figure closing in on her. The air was thick with a nauseating stench, something foul and metallic that clung to her throat with every breath.

The creature's gaping maw twitched hungrily, its grotesque form enough to make anyone's heart race. For Gwen, a teenage girl with no experience in dealing with horrors like this, it was overwhelming. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably as she scrambled backward, her hands clawing at the ground in desperation.

Somehow, she found a narrow hole in the corner of the wall. Without thinking, she forced herself toward it, squeezing through despite the scraping and pain. Her breath came in ragged gasps as she dragged herself into the space beyond.

She had made it inside a house.

For a fleeting second, relief washed over her, her hand pressing against her chest as she tried to steady her racing heartbeat. She didn't know why there was a hole in the wall, and she didn't care. All that mattered was that she had escaped.

Then came the sound.

A harsh, grating scrape echoed from beneath the floor, sending a chill down her spine. It was wrong, unnatural, like something clawing its way closer.

"What… what is that?" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Carefully, she moved deeper into the house, her steps hesitant as she turned a corner—and froze.

Standing before her was a creature straight out of a nightmare.

A towering lizard-like figure loomed in the dim light, its body covered in scales, its claws long and razor-sharp. Its teeth glinted as it breathed, each exhale heavy and predatory. There was no mistaking it—this was something deadly.

And yet, it wore a white lab coat.

The sight was so bizarre it clashed violently with the terror it inspired. The creature—Curt Connors—clutched his head, his expression twisted in agony as he growled through gritted teeth. "Get out… get out of my head…"

He wasn't focused on her. He was fighting something within himself, struggling to maintain control.

Gwen's legs trembled uncontrollably as realization hit her. She had escaped one monster, only to stumble straight into another.

Before she could even react further, a deafening explosion tore through the air behind her.

The wall shattered as the cyborg symbiote forced its way in, its twisted form writhing as it fixed its gaze on Gwen once more. Its hunger was unmistakable, its intent clear.

Gwen shut her eyes tightly, despair swallowing her whole. She could already imagine what would happen next, her body torn apart, her life ending in this nightmare.

"Dad… goodbye…"

Tears streamed down her face as she braced for the inevitable.

But it didn't come.

Seconds passed, and nothing happened.

Confused, she slowly opened her eyes—and what she saw left her stunned.

The lizard creature had stepped in front of her.

It was protecting her.

Her mind struggled to process it, her hand rising to cover her mouth as disbelief took over. She had no way of knowing that the being before her had once been a man—a scientist driven by desperation.

Curt Connors had once worked under Osborn, chasing a breakthrough that could regenerate lost limbs. But when funding vanished after Osborn's death, his work had been left incomplete. With no alternatives, he had taken the risk himself, injecting the experimental serum into his own body.

It had worked—his missing arm had grown back.

But it had also changed him.

The power came with a cost, twisting his body and mind, unleashing a primal instinct that constantly threatened to consume him. Even so, in that moment, when he saw the terrified girl about to die, something human remained.

He chose to protect her.

The cyborg symbiote attacked without hesitation.

Two elongated blades extended from its arms, slicing forward with brutal precision and plunging deep into Connors' chest. The impact was violent, blood erupting as the blades tore through flesh before being ripped free again.

Connors let out a roar of pain, his massive frame staggering—but he didn't fall back.

He endured.

The gaping wound in his chest began to close almost immediately, his regenerative ability kicking in as he forced himself forward. With a snarl, he lashed out, claws meeting metal as he engaged the creature head-on.

As the battle raged, something shifted within him.

His eyes darkened, taking on a cold, bluish hue as the beast inside him surged forward. The instinct to kill, to dominate, began to take hold, and with it came a terrifying increase in ferocity.

The tide turned.

Blow after blow, Connors overwhelmed the cyborg symbiote, his attacks relentless. Each strike carried the raw force of a predator, his movements sharp and instinctive. The creature was driven back, its mechanical body battered as it struggled to keep up.

A punch sent it crashing into the ground. A kick followed, then another, each one fueled by a growing fury.

"I won't let you hurt the weak!" Connors roared, his voice shaking with rage.

The cyborg symbiote, on the other hand, felt nothing but frustration. It had already suffered in the lab, barely surviving, only to come out into the world and immediately get beaten down again.

This was completely unfair.

As it prepared to retaliate, its systems shifting toward deploying a high-yield weapon from Stark Industries, the situation changed once more.

A familiar roar cut through the chaos.

"Boom!"

Tony Stark descended from the sky, landing with controlled force as his presence immediately altered the battlefield. His sensors scanned the scene, taking in the two monstrous figures before him.

"Two targets?" he muttered. "Perfect. Time to clean this up and fix my reputation."

Without hesitation, he raised his arm.

Twin beams of energy fired, slamming into both Connors and the cyborg symbiote, blasting them apart and sending them crashing across the room.

Behind Tony, his armor shifted, additional mechanical appendages unfolding as the symbiote interface activated, enhancing his combat capabilities.

Connors struggled to his feet, his leg damaged where the laser had struck. Though his regenerative ability was powerful, it wasn't instantaneous. It took precious seconds before he could stand again, his body still recovering.

He stared at the armored figure, recognition dawning as recent news flashed through his mind.

"A rogue Iron Man…?" he muttered.

Tony's expression darkened behind the helmet.

"A criminal calling me a criminal?" he shot back coldly. "That's rich. Guess I'll have to educate you."

"Wait—" Connors tried to speak, but Tony was already moving.

Forced to react, Connors dodged, his instincts taking over as the fight resumed.

From the side, Gwen watched in disbelief, her mind unable to keep up with what she was seeing. The one who had protected her—the one who had stood between her and death—was now being attacked without hesitation.

"He's not the bad guy!" she cried out desperately, her voice breaking as she tried to stop it.

Tony didn't even look at her.

To him, the situation was simple. A monster fighting another monster didn't make either of them innocent. If anything, it confirmed his suspicion.

"I'll sort it out after I put him down," he said flatly, already deciding the outcome.

The cyborg symbiote, its systems recalibrating, its red-lit eyes glowing with renewed hostility, seized the opportunity. With a low, mechanical roar, it surged forward again, diving back into the chaos as it joined what had now become Tony Stark's personal battlefield.
