Chapter 13 - Chapter Thirteen: The Edge of Control

The music was slow, almost languid, filling the space without demanding attention.

Elina's hand rested lightly in Victor's, but her mind was elsewhere.

She was aware of everything at once—Victor's warmth, the subtle strength of his grip, the steady rhythm of the dance… and then, always, the shadow of someone else..

Belonia.

He hadn't moved closer yet. Not openly. But she felt it the way his gaze lingered on her across the table before, the slight tightening of his jaw when Victor had drawn near the silent way he leaned against the wall, observing everything like a predator—controlled, composed, calculating.

Elina tried to focus on the music on the rhythm...On Victor but she couldn't.

Victor stepped closer, tilting her slightly in the movement of the dance, his eyes soft but attentive. "Relax," he whispered, a hint of amusement in his tone she gave a faint, polite shy smile "I am." but her heart betrayed her.

Across the room, Belonia's eyes followed every shift of her body, every small smile, every faint flush that crept across her cheeks something stirred inside him he hated that, he hated that he cared.

He took a slow step forward, just enough to make his presence undeniable.

Victor, unaware, continued, guiding her gently in the steps but the air shifted, almost imperceptibly elina felt it, too she glanced up briefly and froze belonia...Standing close enough to be noticed he was just a breath away from the dance floor. His eyes on her, unwavering, unreadable.

Her chest tightened victor followed her gaze. "Everything alright?"

Elina shook her head slightly, trying to appear casual. "Yes… fine."

But the warmth of her body didn't match the coolness she tried to project.

Belonia didn't move again not yet but the air around her seemed to bend slightly, pulled toward him in a way she couldn't explain.

Clara sat at the edge of the table, subtly observing everything her lips curved in a faint, knowing smile she had noticed the silent shift.

Belonia had always been controlled, almost untouchable in his world but something about Elina…

Victor leaned closer again. "You're distracted," he said softly.

Elina's fingers tightened in his hand, just slightly. "I'm… not."

The lie felt easy to say and yet, it wasn't true.

Belonia stepped closer, finally, but not into the dance not yet just close enough that she felt the weight of him. His presence pressed against the edges of her awareness.

Elina froze mid-step, aware of every movement every subtle shift every small breath that seemed to synchronize with his.

Victor noticed too late his voice, warm and soft, hesitated. "You okay?"

Elina managed a faint smile, though her pulse had quickened. "Yes… I'm fine."

Belonia's eyes never left her.

For a moment, she wanted to look away wanted to pretend nothing had shifted wanted to convince herself that he was just there—always distant, always controlled but he wasn't not tonight at least. Something dark and electric pulled through the space between them a tension neither dared speak, but both knew existed. Belonia's hand hovered slightly near the chair by the side, not touching her… but close enough that she could feel it in her awareness.

Her skin prickled.

Victor, oblivious, leaned in again to speak but even his proximity couldn't break her focus she felt the shadow of Belonia behind every move every glance and then, almost imperceptibly, he stepped back.

The subtle withdrawal was worse than the approach it left a space filled with want and curiosity

Elina realized she was holding her breath.

Clara, across the room, noticed the micro-shifts, the silent battle she smirked faintly, sipping her drink.

Belonia didn't notice her he didn't need to elina was his attention now. The song ended victor smiled politely, bowing slightly. "Thank you for the dance."

Elina stepped back gracefully, releasing his hand, her pulse calmed a bit.

Belonia didn't leave he didn't move he simply watched.

Something flickered in his eyes recognition....Realization...desire restrained, yet impossible to deny.

Elina gathered herself, brushing an imaginary strand of hair behind her ear, trying to appear unaffected but deep down, she knew she had just crossed a line she didn't intend to and he had noticed.

Clara smiled faintly to herself. "Interesting night," she murmured.

And across the table, Belonia's jaw tightened tonight, nothing had been said but everything had shifted.
