Chapter 192 - Chapter 192 Battle in the Wetland Gymnasium (3)

The gymnasium's humid atmosphere was thick with the scent of ozone and wet earth. Julian stood on his platform, his eyes narrowed as he watched the ripples on the water's surface. Quagsire was down there, hidden in the murky depths, a silent pressure waiting to erupt.

"It's a solid defensive play, Wake," Julian called out, his voice echoing through the rafters. "But don't think hiding in the bath is going to save you. Togetic hasn't just been training his wings; he's been honing his senses. Between his Aura sensitivity and the natural tracking of Magic Leaf, your Quagsire is glowing like a neon sign in that dark water!"

Wake didn't look worried. He stood with his arms crossed over his massive, bare chest, a wide grin visible beneath his mask. "Detection is one thing, Julian, but hitting a target that can move in three dimensions while you're stuck in the air is another! Quagsire, show him the mud is our domain! Sludge Bomb!"

"Quag~"

From the depths of the pool, several dark, globulous masses of toxic mud erupted. They didn't just fly straight; they were launched in a spread, designed to blanket Togetic's airspace.

"Magic Leaf, counter them!" Julian signaled.

Togetic's wings flashed a vibrant green, and a flurry of glowing leaves sliced through the air. The two moves met in a series of wet, splattering explosions. However, the sheer volume of the Sludge Bombs was overwhelming. Despite the boost from the Nasty Plot earlier, the physical weight of the mud was beginning to overwhelm the delicate energy of the leaves. One stray globule of sludge bypassed the defense and slammed into Togetic's side.

"Jia-gei! (Ack! That's nasty!)" Togetic spiraled for a second, his white feathers now stained with a dark, stinging purple residue.

"Togetic!" Julian's hand moved instinctively toward his belt, his fingers hovering over a Poké Ball. He could see the strain on the little flyer's face. The Sludge Bomb was a Poison-type move, and while Togetic's Eviolite was helping him tank the physical impact, the toxic nature of the attack was sapping his energy.

"Jia... gei... (I'm okay... I'm still in this...)" Togetic shook himself, his eyes hardening as he regained his altitude. He refused to look back at Julian, keeping his gaze locked on the water where the next volley was surely being prepared.

Julian pulled his hand back from the Poké Ball. He saw the fire in Togetic's eyes—a stubborn, almost arrogant refusal to lose. "I hear you. If you're not quitting, neither am I."

But the situation was grim. Julian's mind raced through the possibilities. If they kept playing this game of 'dodge the mud,' Togetic would eventually tire out. Quagsire had the home-field advantage and a massive pool of stamina. Sylveon was an option, but she would lose the verticality that Togetic provided, making her an easy target for a drag-down move. Gowlithe was already in the red. And Togetic had already used his four primary moves this battle: Psychic, Nasty Plot, Ancient Power, and Magic Leaf. The strategic 'Metronome' wildcard was locked out by the flow of the match.

"Tsk... we're being boxed in," Julian muttered. He watched the water again. Quagsire was moving like a shadow, its location shifting every time a Sludge Bomb was launched. It was playing a game of attrition.

"Having trouble, Julian?" Wake shouted. "My Quagsire can do this all day! We've got the patience of the swamp itself! Quagsire, keep the pressure up! More Sludge Bombs!"

More purple orbs hissed out of the water. Togetic began a desperate aerial dance, his wings buzzing at maximum speed as he dodged and wove through the toxic projectiles. It was a beautiful display of acrobatics, but it was purely defensive.

I need a break in the rhythm, Julian thought. I need to force him to use more energy than he's recovering.

"Togetic! Stop running!" Julian's voice cracked like a whip. "If he wants a war of attrition, give it to him! Use Ancient Power to intercept every single Sludge Bomb! Don't let a single one past!"

"Jia-gei-gu! (Finally! I was tired of being the target!)"

Togetic stopped his retreat. He hovered in place, his eyes glowing with a primitive, stony light. As the next wave of mud balls rose from the pool, Togetic didn't dodge. He unleashed a barrage of prehistoric rock fragments. The arena became a chaotic mess of colliding elements—brown mud meeting gray stone in mid-air, creating clouds of dust and spray that hung over the water.

"Hah! You think you can out-shoot a Quagsire?" Wake laughed. "Quagsire, don't hold back! Show him the true depth of your lungs! Full power Sludge Bomb!"

"Weight~"

The frequency of the mud attacks increased. Quagsire was now firing almost continuously, its round head occasionally breaching the surface to gulp in air before diving back down to continue the assault. But something was changing.

Every time Togetic used Ancient Power, he looked a little more... energized. Ancient Power had a rare, secondary effect—the chance to boost all of a Pokémon's stats at once. And in this rapid-fire exchange, Julian was betting on the odds.

"Keep going, Togetic! Faster!"

The explosions in the air were deafening now. The rock particles from the Ancient Power were beginning to dominate. They weren't just neutralizing the mud; they were shattering it and continuing their trajectory, peppering the surface of the water.

Wake's grin began to falter. He saw the way Togetic was moving—his flight was becoming smoother, his rocks larger and more frequent. "Wait... the Ancient Power... he's getting stronger?"

"You finally noticed?" Julian's smirk was back, wider and sharper than before. "Ancient Power isn't just an attack, Wake. It's a link to the past, a surge of prehistoric adrenaline. And the more we use it, the more Togetic taps into that hidden strength. The plan is complete!"

Julian pointed toward the center of the pool. "Togetic! One last Ancient Power to clear the air, then finish it with the boosted Magic Leaf!"

"Jia-gei-GU!"

Togetic let out a triumphant cry. A massive cluster of stones erupted from his hands, far larger than anything he'd produced before. It didn't just block the incoming Sludge Bombs; it crushed them and rained down on the water's surface with the force of a meteor shower. Several stones hit the water right where Quagsire was submerged.

The sudden impact forced Quagsire to breach, gasping for air. It had used too much energy on the Sludge Bomb barrage, and its movements were now sluggish.

"Now! Magic Leaf!"

Togetic's wings didn't just glow; they radiated a blinding emerald light. He fired two sharp, jagged leaves that moved with terrifying speed. They didn't just float; they hissed through the air, carving a path through the mist.

"Quagsire! Use Psybeam to deflect them! Fast!" Wake shouted, his voice tinged with desperation.

Quagsire opened its mouth, trying to gather the blue energy for a Psybeam, but its throat was dry and its muscles were trembling from the exertion of the 'machine-gun' mud strategy. The blue light flickered for a second and then sputtered out like a dying bulb.

The Magic Leaves struck.

SLASH!

The green energy carved through Quagsire's soft hide, the super-effective Grass-type energy surging through its body. The blue Pokémon didn't even have time to cry out. The force of the blow pushed it backward, its round body bobbing in the water like a cork. Its beady eyes rolled back into its head, turning into the familiar dizzy swirls of a fainted Pokémon.

The gymnasium went quiet. The mist slowly began to dissipate, revealing Quagsire floating belly-up in the center of the pool.

The referee raised his flag with a sharp snap. "Quagsire is unable to battle! Togetic is the winner!"
