Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Edge of Confessions

The sun was dipping low, painting the sky in streaks of orange and pink, and Yumi walked beside Pherrie along the quiet beach path. The summer holidays had settled into a rhythm of laughter, teasing, and stolen moments—moments that made her heart race in ways she could no longer deny.

"You've been awfully quiet today," Pherrie said, sidling closer so his shoulder brushed hers. The proximity made her pulse stutter.

"I'm… thinking," Yumi admitted softly, unable to meet his gaze. "About everything. About… us."

His smirk widened, that infuriating, teasing sparkle returning to his eyes. "Us, huh? Dangerous topic." He leaned slightly closer, the faint scent of summer and something uniquely him curling around her senses. "You know, Princess… you're more flustered than usual. And I find it… delightful."

Yumi groaned softly, hiding her face in her hands. "You're impossible."

"Am I?" he asked lightly, leaning closer so his breath brushed the side of her ear. "Or are you just realizing how much you like it when I am?"

Her chest tightened. He was too close, too warm, too teasing, and her heart betrayed her with every beat. She wanted to deny it—but she couldn't.

Before she could respond, a familiar voice rang out from behind the dunes.

"Yumi!"

Kai stepped forward, hands on her hips, eyes narrowing at the sight of them. "Still wrapped around him, I see. Don't get too comfortable."

Pherrie's jaw tightened imperceptibly. He didn't break his hold on Yumi's hand, didn't step away, but his tone carried unmistakable warning. "Ignore her. You're with me, Princess."

Yumi's fingers twitched at his grip, the possessiveness making her feel dizzy in the best possible way. "I… I am," she whispered, heart pounding.

Kai's glare lingered for a moment longer, then she turned and walked away, muttering something about fools in love.

Yumi exhaled shakily, turning to Pherrie. "She… she's really jealous."

He smirked again, playful and infuriating all at once. "Good. Let her be. I like knowing you're mine, Princess."

Her cheeks flamed, and her heart pounded harder. She wanted to protest—but the words caught in her throat as Pherrie stepped closer, lowering his voice to a soft, intimate murmur.

"You know," he said, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear, "all this teasing… it's because I can't stop thinking about you. About how much I want to protect you… and annoy you at the same time."

Yumi's breath hitched. "You… think about me?"

"Every moment," he replied, smirking again. "And you, Princess? You're thinking about me too."

Her lips parted, the admission trembling on the edge of her voice. She wanted to deny it—but she couldn't.

"I… maybe I am," she whispered, feeling the warmth between them thicken, the teasing and protectiveness merging into something undeniable.

Pherrie's grin softened slightly, eyes locking onto hers. "Good," he said, voice low, dangerous, and tender all at once. "Because I'm not going anywhere. Not now, not ever."

The waves crashed softly behind them, the firelight from distant lanterns flickering across their faces. Yumi's heart raced, and for the first time, she let herself lean just a little closer, feeling the pull between them, the sparks igniting in ways she could no longer resist.

And in that moment, with the summer wind around them and the teasing, protective boy she couldn't deny, Yumi finally admitted to herself—slowly, fearlessly, and completely—that she was falling for Pherrie.

And this time, she was ready to let the feelings take over.
