Chapter 8 - The Little Secret We Keep

That morning, Rinato stared out the window of his apartment. Last night's rain had stopped, leaving the scent of wet earth and fresh air. He brewed some coffee, but his mind was restless. The memory of the tiny umbrella and their shoulders brushing together with Ayaka kept replaying in his head.

At school, they had agreed not to meet directly. It felt strange—but it was to keep their secret safe. Rinato walked down the school stairs, glanced at the hallway leading to the classrooms, and made sure his steps stayed clear of Ayaka. From a distance, he saw her walking with her friends, laughing cheerfully, just like any other day.

Rinato smiled faintly and looked down. "Alright… we'll stick to our own paths," he murmured. This agreement made them both feel secure, but also a little curious about each other. They communicated through brief glances, small notes tossed discreetly, or subtle gestures that only the two of them could understand.

Throughout the day, Rinato kept thinking about those little secret moments. Every time Ayaka passed in the hallway, he would glance briefly, just enough to send a silent message. Ayaka would respond with a faint smile or a gentle nod, without drawing her friends' attention. They played along the edges of distance, keeping their secret so the outside world remained normal.

Rinato realized something: maintaining physical distance at school actually brought them closer emotionally. There was a sweet tension, a sense of comfort, a desire to break the rules—but also the fear of being caught. All of it made his heart warm, and every small smile from Ayaka felt precious.

After school ended, Rinato opened his apartment door, set down his bag, and took a deep breath. Although the school day felt normal, his heart was still racing because today they hadn't met in class—but of course, Ayaka was surely waiting for him in the apartment hallway.

And sure enough. Through the crack of the hallway door, Ayaka appeared, giving him a faint smile. Her white hair was slightly messy at the ends from the afternoon weather, but her bright blue eyes looked warmly at Rinato. They exchanged a small smile—no words, but enough to make both feel relieved.

Rinato closed the door, and they walked together to the small kitchen. The aroma of coffee and freshly baked bread greeted them. Today, they decided to do something simple: prepare an afternoon snack together. Nothing special, just light activity side by side, yet intimacy arose from these small things.

Ayaka picked up a bowl and a spoon, while Rinato prepared the ingredients. They exchanged positions without speaking, only through subtle gestures. Each time their hands almost touched, Rinato felt his heartbeat quicken. Ayaka glanced at him briefly, then smiled shyly, making Rinato blush.

"I'm glad… we can do this quietly," Rinato said, trying to break the silence, his voice soft.

Ayaka nodded, her smile growing more genuine. "Yes… it feels… more enjoyable when no one else knows."

Their conversation was light: about the chocolate they mixed into the batter, the aroma of tea, or how to cut the bread neatly. But amidst these words, there were little moments that made Rinato's heart race—Ayaka's eyes lingering too long, her faint smile, even the way she leaned slightly when reaching for something on the table. Everything felt so close, yet safely away from the outside world's gaze.

They laughed lightly when Rinato nearly spilled some batter. Ayaka tried to stifle her laugh, her eyes sparkling, and Rinato felt a warm sensation in his chest. It wasn't just about being together—it was a secret relationship slowly but surely developing.

After finishing the snack, they sat at the small table, enjoying their work. Rinato observed Ayaka quietly, his heart filled with a mixture of admiration, comfort, and… slight nervousness. Ayaka seemed more relaxed at the apartment than at school—no crowd, no pressure from her popularity. Just the two of them.

"Moments like this… feel strange, but pleasant," Rinato whispered almost.

Ayaka smiled, her bright blue eyes meeting his. "I agree… it feels like we can truly be ourselves here."

Time seemed to stop. Every small movement—stirring tea, spreading jam, arranging plates—became a sweet ritual that only they understood. No grand words or confessions, just warm silence, gentle laughter, and closeness that made Rinato's heart flutter.

As dusk approached, they cleaned the kitchen together. Rinato looked at Ayaka, realizing how few people he trusted like this. Ayaka was not just a neighbor or a classmate, but someone who could make his days different—more alive, warmer.

Before parting, Ayaka looked at Rinato with a gentle smile. "See you tomorrow, Rinato-san… and thank you for today."

Rinato returned a faint smile, his heart warm. "See you tomorrow… Ayaka-san."

They walked to their respective apartment doors, exchanging small waves. No one knew that behind the busyness of school, they had a secret routine that was becoming more natural, building a small, sweet, and slightly awkward bond—a little world just for the two of them.

A few days later, their secret routine began to feel natural. Rinato would come home from school earlier, not because of work, but because his heart wanted to ensure Ayaka wouldn't get caught in the hallway rain. As soon as he arrived, Ayaka would almost always appear from the neighboring door, her smile faint but warm.

In Rinato's apartment kitchen, they prepared snacks together. No excessive words, only simple interactions: stirring batter, brewing tea, or arranging plates. Every movement seemed to follow a rhythm they understood without needing to speak.

Rinato began noticing small things about Ayaka he had previously missed: the way she tilted her head while watching the batter, her shy smile when he accidentally spilled a bit of sugar, or her soft laugh that sounded like music. All these little things made his heart warm and… nervous.

"Rinato-san, you're taking measuring the sugar too seriously," Ayaka said, smiling, her eyes softly watching him.

Rinato blushed. "Ah… I just want… uh… to make it perfect," he replied awkwardly.

Ayaka laughed lightly at him, then picked up a spoon to help Rinato. Their shoulders almost brushed, but there was no awkward tension—only warmth that felt natural. Rinato swallowed, realizing that moments like this had become something he looked forward to every day.

Once the snacks were ready, they sat at the small table, enjoying the results while maintaining a comfortable distance—close enough to feel intimate. Light conversation continued: about the weather, the aroma of tea, or trivial school matters. But in between, there was a sweet tension that made Rinato's heartbeat quicken every time their eyes met.

Rinato realized that this was more than mere companionship—it was a secret relationship slowly but surely growing. They didn't need confessions or romantic words to feel close. Every little laugh, faint smile, or simple gesture was proof that they were paying attention to each other in a unique and sweet way.

Before parting, Ayaka looked at Rinato with her gentle blue eyes. "See you tomorrow, Rinato-san. Thank you… for everything."

Rinato smiled faintly, his heart warm. "See you tomorrow… Ayaka-san."

They walked to their apartment doors, waving to each other. No one knew that behind their everyday routines, there was a little secret world they shared—one that now felt completely natural and sweet.

As Rinato closed his apartment door, he looked at the evening sky darkening, realizing one thing: these simple interactions had become a part of his life. Their secret routine, which started from small moments in the hallway and kitchen, now felt so comfortable—close enough to feel each other's warmth, sweet enough to make his heart race, and hidden enough to remain their own secret.

The day ended with a small smile on Rinato's face, and surely Ayaka shared the same thought: that their little, secret world was too precious to share with anyone else.
