The dense cloud of frost, pulverized snow, and prismatic reflections suspended in the center of the subterranean colosseum began to slowly dissipate under the flow of air currents. In the upper balconies, the silence was absolute; no one dared to blink as the cold vapor gave way, revealing the stage of the final impact.
In the center of the arena, the visual spectacle was overwhelming. The gigantic dome of crystal and sand that Gaara had raised remained standing, though deeply cracked by the force of Haku's Absolute Blizzard. Massive spears of bluish ice had partially penetrated the structure, freezing the surface and creating a collision of densities that kept both elements neutralized in a point of perfect equilibrium.
The massive clash had left no clear victor through brute force: the power of the Hyōton and the solidity of the Shōton had canceled each other out in the final second.
When the crystal dome fractured and fell in glittering fragments onto the frozen ground, Haku reappeared standing a few meters ahead. However, his breathing was extremely heavy and ragged. Dense vapor escaped his lips with every breath, his shoulders sagged from accumulated exhaustion, and small drops of sweat froze almost instantly on his cheeks. The massive consumption of chakra required to deploy ice techniques on such a large scale and maintain the drastic temperature drop was taking a severe toll on his body.
A few steps away, Gaara observed his teammate. Although he maintained an upright posture and his energy reserves were still ample, his green eyes reflected a quick evaluation of the situation. Gaara knew that continuing a frontal clash of massive jutsus would only lead to unnecessary depletion or severely injure Haku—something he flatly refused to do.
"Haku has already pushed his body to the absolute limit..." Gaara thought with cold clarity. "I'll end this right now, as cleanly as possible."
Without the need to create more crystal or waste an extra drop of chakra on jutsus, Gaara took a deep breath. In a blink, the air around his feet vibrated with a rapid refraction of light.
SHIN!
Utilizing a high-speed movement variant based on the control of crystal particles, Gaara's figure vanished completely from the spectators' sight.
Haku's eyes widened, attempting to react to the sudden shift in the air, but his body, numbed by exhaustion, failed to respond with the required speed.
Before the young Yuki could turn his head or raise one last barrier of frost, Gaara reappeared directly behind his back. With surgical precision and just enough force to avoid causing permanent damage, Gaara delivered a swift blow with the edge of his open hand directly to the nape of Haku's neck.
"You did excellent, Haku..." Gaara murmured in a low, respectful voice.
Haku's eyes faded as he lost consciousness. His body fell forward inertly, but before it touched the frozen stone surface, Gaara extended his arm and gently caught him by the shoulder, cushioning his fall until he rested on the ground.
The mist finished clearing completely, exposing the scene: Gaara standing, serene and without a single serious scratch, holding his unconscious teammate.
Malenia walked toward the center of the arena with firm strides, assessing Haku's condition with a quick glance before straightening her posture and raising her right arm toward the balconies.
"Haku Yuki can no longer continue!" Malenia's clear, authoritative voice announced, echoing in every corner of the colosseum. "The winner of the ninth match and final duel of the preliminary round is Gaara of Sunagakure!"
In the Kazekage's balcony, Daigo contemplated the scene with a look full of approval. He nodded slightly to himself, valuing not only his nephew's technical prowess, but also the tactical maturity and empathy shown in closing the fight without cruelty.
Arena medics quickly entered the ring with a stretcher to attend to Haku. Gaara helped place him carefully before stepping back, watching as they carried his teammate toward the infirmary for recovery.
Malenia advanced to the center of the ring and raised both hands.
"Attention to all present!" Malenia declared, instantly capturing the focus of the ninjas from all delegations. "With this match, the preliminary phase has officially concluded. All preceding duels have determined the shinobi qualified for the final stage of the Chūnin Exams."
A murmur of anticipation swept through the balconies. The young ninjas who had survived their respective rounds leaned over the railings, feeling the tension rise once more.
In the Hidden Stone balcony, Kurotsuchi crossed her arms over her chest with a broad, confident grin, while Deidara casually molded a small clay figure between his fingers.
In Konoha's section, Naruto adjusted his headband with eyes burning with determination, while Sasuke remained silently at his side, hands in his pockets and eyes fixed on the colosseum floor.
For Sunagakure, the representation was overwhelming: Kimimaro, Gaara, Sunae, Karin, and Daiku stood together on the platform, projecting a collective composure and strength that did not go unnoticed by any of the other villages.
From the top platform, the figure of Daigo stepped forward. Resting his hands on the stone railing, his calm voice echoed, amplified by a slight pulse of chakra.
"I congratulate each of the young shinobi who fought in this arena today," Daigo began, sweeping his gaze across the faces of the qualifiers. "You have proven that the new generation possesses not only extraordinary skills, but also the determination needed to carry the future of your respective villages."
Daigo paused briefly before continuing in a solemn tone.
"The matches of the final phase will not take place today," the Kazekage announced. "All qualified participants will have exactly one month of preparation starting now. This time will allow you to recover from your injuries, analyze your future opponents, and sharpen your abilities to the maximum. The finals will be held in Sunagakure's grand main arena before the feudal lords and representatives of the Great Nations."
A general nod ran through the survivors of the preliminary round. A month was standard time, but also the perfect opportunity to develop new strategies and master techniques that could tip the scales in their favor.
"Next," Daigo continued, gesturing toward the large metal panel on the main wall, "the official matchups for the final tournament will be revealed."
The metal panel groaned loudly as the golden characters began to mechanically rearrange themselves, forming the definitive fight card.
All eyes in the arena locked onto the screen.
First Match:
Deidara (Iwagakure) vs. Gaara (Sunagakure)
"Well, well..." Deidara hummed upon seeing his name on the board, breaking into a mocking smirk as he looked toward Suna's platform. "I get to face the crystal kid directly. This'll be a fine chance to show everyone that true art is an explosion."
Gaara, having returned to his team's platform, looked at the board with absolute serenity. "What a coincidence... so I get to avenge Kankurō," he thought in silence, quietly pleased to avenge his brother.
Second Match:
Karin (Sunagakure) vs. Kimimaro (Sunagakure)
Karin adjusted her glasses quickly, letting out a small sigh at the sight of her opponent's name. "It just had to be Kimimaro... this is going to be tough," she murmured with a mix of interest and amused resignation.
Kimimaro bowed his head slightly toward Karin, keeping his respectful tone. "Do not hold back or lose confidence, Karin. It will be an engaging fight, and do not hesitate to use your chains."
"Trust me, I don't plan on making it easy for you, Kimimaro," Karin replied, smiling with renewed resolve.
Third Match:
Daiku (Sunagakure) vs. Sasuke Uchiha (Konohagakure)
In Konoha's section, Sasuke looked up at the board. His dark eyes narrowed sharply as he read his rival's name. A smirk touched his lips at the prospect of getting his revenge after the defeat Daiku had dealt him in the desert.
Daiku remained standing with his arms crossed, observing Sasuke from a distance with a calm gaze.
"So we meet again," Daiku commented quietly to himself. "If I beat you once before, the result won't change."
Fourth Match:
Sunae (Sunagakure) vs. Kurotsuchi (Iwagakure)
"Perfect!" Kurotsuchi exclaimed from the Iwa balcony, slamming her fists together enthusiastically. "I get the Kazekage's daughter. I've been dying to test my Lava Release against someone who uses Scorch Release and fights hand-to-hand."
Sunae burst into a loud, eager laugh, cracking her knuckles. "Heh, I get to take her down! Perfect, I'll have to avenge Temari-chan."
Daigo raised his hand again, speaking up to clarify the structure of the final bracket.
"As you may have noticed," the Kazekage explained, "there is an odd number of qualifiers in this round due to the format of the previous brackets. Therefore, participant Naruto Uzumaki of Konohagakure will advance directly to the second round of the finals."
Naruto blinked in surprise, pointing a thumb at his chest. "Wait... I pass straight through without fighting in the first round of the tournament?"
"Don't think you won't be fighting, Naruto Uzumaki," Daigo interrupted with a subtle smile. "Your position means you will face the winner of the Fourth Match between Sunae and Kurotsuchi directly in the second round. Whoever emerges victorious from that battle will have to test their strength against you immediately."
Naruto looked toward Suna's platform and then toward Iwa's, seeing Sunae and Kurotsuchi glaring at each other with sparks in their eyes. A fierce, excited grin spread across the young Uzumaki's face as he pumped his fist in the air.
"Alright! I don't care which one of them wins, I'll be more than ready to fight whoever it is when the time comes!" Naruto shouted with his usual enthusiasm.
"Very well," Daigo concluded with a firm voice. "The matchups have been decided. You have one month to train, recover, and prepare your strategies. Show us what you are made of when the gates of Sunagakure's grand arena open for the final phase. Today's session is over. You are dismissed!"
Malenia gestured toward the main exits. "All contenders and delegations, clear the arena in order!"
With the official announcement complete, the murmur in the stands erupted into a wave of conversations and tactical analyses. The genin from various nations began breaking rank, heading toward the exit corridors that led back up to the village surface.
The Iwa ninjas were the first to turn around. Kurotsuchi walked with a purposeful stride, throwing side-glances at Sunae while mentally planning how she would defeat her. Deidara walked beside her, muttering to himself about how much clay he would need to mold over the next four weeks to overpower Gaara's crystal.
In Konoha's group, Naruto talked nonstop at high speed about the training he would undergo during the month, while Sasuke walked a few steps behind, lost in his own thoughts on how to avoid ending up like a mummy again.
Meanwhile, the Sunagakure delegation gathered on the central platform. Daiku, Sunae, Karin, and Kimimaro waited for Gaara to join them after checking on Haku's status with the medical team.
"One month..." Karin said, adjusting her glasses as she looked at her teammates. "It's going to be a pretty intense month for all of us."
"That is how it should be," Kimimaro replied serenely. "Every one of our opponents will use this time to look for our weaknesses. We cannot take any victory for granted."
"Heh, don't worry about that," Sunae chimed in with a confident grin, resting her hands behind her head. "I plan to train twice as hard starting tomorrow. That fight against Kurotsuchi is going to be absolute madness."
Gaara walked in silence alongside his teammates as they took the main passage toward the subterranean exit. Upon stepping out onto the surface, the bright desert sunlight and Sunagakure's warm breeze welcomed them, marking the end of a long, grueling preliminary day.
The cards were on the table, the rivals set, and the clock ticking. The stage was completely set for Sunagakure to witness the grand final phase of the Chūnin Exams in one month's time.
