Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Hidden Agendas

The silence between Alex and his father was heavy.

Not awkward.

Not uncertain.

Just… tense.

Like two forces standing on opposite sides of something neither was willing to step away from.

Leo Green adjusted his cuffs calmly, his expression unreadable.

"You've changed," he said.

Alex let out a quiet breath.

"So have you."

A faint smile touched Leo's lips.

"No. I've always been the same."

That was the problem.

Alex folded his arms.

"Why are you really here?"

Leo didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked slowly across the room, taking in the surroundings like he was assessing value.

Then

He spoke.

"You've finally done something right."

Alex frowned.

"…What?"

Leo turned to face him fully.

"Dating Samantha Valentine."

The words hit harder than expected.

Alex's expression darkened instantly.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

Leo stepped closer.

"Everything."

Alex shook his head slightly.

"No. Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Act like this is about me," Alex said. "It's not."

Leo's eyes sharpened slightly.

"Of course it is."

"No," Alex replied firmly. "It's about her."

A pause.

"And what her name represents."

Leo didn't deny it.

That alone said enough.

"The Valentine family," Leo said calmly, "is one of the most powerful networks in the world. Influence. Technology. Control."

He looked at Alex.

"And now you're connected to them."

Alex's jaw tightened.

"…That's not why I'm with her."

"I know," Leo replied.

"That's why it works."

That made Alex pause.

Confused.

Suspicious.

Leo continued

"For the first time since you were born… you've made a decision that benefits something bigger than yourself."

Alex laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

"So that's it?"

He stepped closer.

"You show up after four years just to tell me my relationship is useful to you?"

Leo didn't react.

"Not just useful."

"Strategic."

That word changed everything.

Alex's eyes hardened.

"What are you planning?"

Leo met his gaze.

But said nothing.

The silence stretched.

"Tell me," Alex pressed.

Leo simply adjusted his sleeve again.

"You don't need to worry about that."

That was the worst possible answer.

Alex stepped back slightly, frustration building.

"You always do this," he said. "You come in, you manipulate things, and you expect me to just accept it."

Leo's voice remained calm.

"I expect you to understand."

"I don't," Alex snapped.

"And I'm not going to."

A brief pause.

Then Leo said quietly

"You will."

And just like that

The conversation was over.

On his terms.

As always.

But this time…

Alex didn't let it go.

As Leo walked away, Alex's mind was already racing.

Strategic.

Connection.

Valentine family.

Something wasn't right.

And for the first time in a long time

Alex felt it clearly.

He was being used.

"…Not this time," he muttered under his breath.

Meanwhile…

Across campus…

Samantha sat in the library.

Laptop open.

Eyes focused.

Mind sharp.

But this wasn't schoolwork.

Not anymore.

Esther.

Her fingers moved quickly across the keyboard, pulling up records, access logs, fragments of information most people wouldn't even know how to find.

Enrollment history.

Background inconsistencies.

Gaps.

Too many gaps.

"That's not normal…" Samantha whispered.

Esther's profile looked clean.

Too clean.

Which meant one thing.

It had been cleaned.

Samantha leaned back slightly.

Thinking.

Connecting dots.

Then

She found something.

Not directly.

But buried.

Deep.

Hidden behind layers of encryption and misdirection.

A name.

Phantom.

Samantha's eyes narrowed.

She dug deeper.

Careful.

Precise.

Fragments of information began to form a pattern.

Not public.

Not official.

But real.

A shadow organization.

Advanced.

Dangerous.

Operating behind systems, governments, networks.

And Esther…

Was connected to it.

Samantha's heart didn't race.

She didn't panic.

She didn't react emotionally.

She processed.

"Why…" she murmured softly.

Then another piece clicked.

Nathan.

Her eyes widened slightly.

Search.

Cross-reference.

Connections.

Patterns.

And there it was.

Not direct.

But clear enough.

They were interested in Nathan.

Samantha sat back slowly.

Thinking.

Re-evaluating everything.

Esther's return.

Her persistence.

Her focus.

It wasn't about love.

It was about him.

Nathan.

"…What are you?" Samantha whispered under her breath.

She closed her laptop slowly.

Decision made.

She wouldn't say anything.

Not yet.

Because she didn't have the full picture.

And acting too early…

Could be dangerous.

"Keep your friends close…"

She murmured.

Then her eyes darkened slightly.

"…and your enemies closer."

From that moment on

Samantha watched Esther differently.

Every move.

Every word.

Every interaction.

Not as a rival.

Not as a nuisance.

But as a threat.

And she was going to understand it.

No matter what it took.

Elsewhere…

Alex stared at his phone.

Then at the message he had just typed.

"We need to talk."

Sent.

To Samantha.

Because if his father was planning something…

She deserved to know.

But deep down

He wasn't sure if telling her would protect her…

Or pull her deeper into something dangerous.

And for the first time

Both of them were walking into the unknown.

Separately.

Silently.

And unknowingly

Toward the same truth.
